[The young girl had waited for some time. Watching. Listening. She noticed a certain trend among her fellow foreigners--one that she had yet to become a part of. And as the weeks past and she still had yet to join their ranks...]

[She didn't even bother attempting a smile as she turned the camera on.]

A lot of people have been talking about those letters.

But...what do you think it means if you didn't get one?

[It was almost a rhetorical question at this point; she might not have known for certain, but she could wager a guess.]

[Her brows rose. Actually slightly surprised. Jack was already dead, so it couldn't be because he died. Because that hadn't stopped him the first time.]

Why do you think that is?

Wouldn't your future self want to tell you something? I mean...if you could write a letter to your past self right now, wouldn't you?

You know, I thought about it since Skulduggery brought it up, but... I don't think I would?

[The surprise continued.]

[If given the chance, Midii was pretty sure she would. Less sure that her younger self would have trusted such a letter--either because, in those days, she hadn't believed enough in magic to think it was real, or because such a thing would have aroused too much suspicion to trust it--but, knowing what she did now, she would have tried.]

[Who knows? It might have saved her from some of her greatest regrets. Both on and before the Turtle.]

I've been thinking about that, since people mentioned that they were showing up. If I had to guess... maybe future-me I knew that I'd keep looking for things to come, instead of looking at the things in front of me.

After all, it would be bad to get over being obsessed about the past, only to get obsessed about the future.

[...that was when it hit her: Jack was right.]

[And it was the exact same for her, in every way. Maybe not obsessed, but she had spent so long focusing on her past. The things she did. If a letter had come from her future self...one that she could somehow confirm was legitimate...she would have started prioritizing the future over the present. Poured over every last word until she was sure she knew everything she needed to.]

...it would be nice to know if my future turns out better than my past, at least.

[She was still neutral on the present.]

I think it's normal, especially for those of us who... you know, have pasts that play a big part in who we are. So I'm choosing to think that not sending myself a letter, just means that I'm in a place where I'm okay with that. Which is a good thing!

I never thought I'd consider me not wanting to know something to be a good thing.

Looks like you've learned more here than you're expecting, huh?

Well, that much, I already knew.

[A grin. A knowing grin. Your habit of wordplay was slowly influencing her, Jack.]

How about you write the letter instead? To your future self.

[You might as well have suggested she start writing a letter to Santa Claus.]

But I wouldn't be telling myself anything I didn't already know.

[ He can suggest that too, just wait until December. ]

It might not seem like it, but can you be 100% sure of that? What if future-you forgets something?

Alternatively, what can it hurt? I'll write one with you, if you want.

I suppose. [She wasn't that against the idea. Like he said, worst case scenario, it might trigger something in her future memory. She was smart, but she wasn't eidetic. She did forget things sometimes.] What do you think I should write about?

All the stuff I've learned here in Keeliai about people. Not like, secrets about them or anything, just... how they really are.

[She giggled right back.]

I'll tell you what. If you say one thing you'd write about me...I'll mention one thing I'd write about you.

[Because of course she would write about him.]

[ Jack makes a show of thinking about it. ]

Hmmm... I don't know if that's worth it, Midii...

[For a moment, she frowned. Looking genuinely upset.]

[...until she realized there was a strong chance that Jack was most likely still teasing her. It wasn't like him to say things like that to her and really mean it. But it was exactly like him to prolong a joke.]
