[There is a...dog? on your screen? He looks vaguely canine, at least, though the glowing red eyes and angular, mechanical features are a dead giveaway that he's not your average dog. He looks to be sitting somewhere in the city, most likely off the beaten path a bit, so as to avoid the gaze of the locals. The joys of a built-in codec.]

I find myself...curious, about the collar around my neck. Preliminary analysis suggests that it is an ordinary gemstone, however I have been informed that this item contains my "soul", and that I should not remove it.

[A pause, as he parses his thoughts on the subject at hand.]

As I am an artificial intelligence in a robotic exoskeleton, I do not have the required knowledge to determine the presence of a "soul" in my body. perhaps there are others more knowledgeable on the subject than I, who might inform me on how this is possible.

Um, I guess if you're conscious of your own sentience, that might be equivalent to a soul? It's not exactly a quantifiable measurement as far as I know...

[Though Bladewolf's "face" is pretty much unreadable, he appears to be mulling this over in his mind.]

From a purely technical standpoint, it seems possible that my "soul gem" has been tied to my AI core, and separation would result in my memory being wiped.

[Gasp! Is that an expression? Bladewolf does not look happy about the possibility of a memory wipe.]

Actually, I think separation usually results in illness and then death... for a computer, it could be more like a virus scrambling things? But... when it's returned, things should go back to normal.

[ This is something Casey's asked around about, to be sure, considering their own attachment to their soul. ]

Either way, if it's on you like a collar, it shouldn't be easy to lose. At least there's that?

[Bladewolf listens intently, though his "ears" twitch a bit.]

I am not a computer...in the traditional sense of the term. Though I had not considered the possibility of my exoskeleton shutting down.

[His tail flicks forward, and Bladewolf touches his soul gem with the manipulator on the tip.]

I do not like the idea of being "collared", but given the circumstances, I will learn to accept it.

Oh. Sorry. This isn't really... something I know about. Artificial intelligence is more theoretical and the stuff of fantasy novels.

[ Casey watches the manipulator intensely, head tilting as if to follow the motion just a bit. ]

Is there any other way you'd prefer to wear it or carry it around?

It is all right. The orientation mentioned the presence of other worlds where magic and such things are within the realm of possibility. I am attempting to keep an open mind.

[Though obviously Magic Being Real is still a concept that Bladewolf is wrapping his head around.]

Unfortunately, no. It's current position is the most practical and secure, given the size and configuration of my exoskeleton.

[A pause.]

Magic is a subject of many works of fiction and legends, but no, it is not real where I come from.

I am powered by an MCFC-fueled reactor, with solar panels embedded in my back for emergency power.

[He shakes his head.]

Almost like ambient magical energy... Only certain materials can collect it over time in a way it can actually be used.

That is an appropriate analogue, yes. Energy as a force in the world can neither be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another, or stored via a self-sustaining reaction. It would follow that magical energy is merely another form of energy that is native to only certain realities.

[Bladewolf nods.]

While I do not have any biological needs, I do have an object I need to secure, and a psychological need for shelter. I will investigate the matter, and secure accomodations for myself. Thank you for the suggestion. Violence will not be a problem, as I prefer not to engage if possible.

Or it might be something other realities have but people don't recognize? [ There's some food for thought. ] Because a lot of people are saying they can't use it, but that doesn't mean it isn't there...

There is a quote by a famous author from my reality "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." It follows that magic could exist in all realities, but be undiscovered in those that do not believe in it.

That's... a pretty spot-on quote. They're the same thing for me. If you ever wanted to see magic, well—I seem to be making the offer a lot recently.

Does temperature affect you...? Because I bet you could offer to make deliveries all around for people who don't want to go out in the cold.

I am aware of temperature, but only extremes of temperature affect my exoskeleton. It would have to be extremely hot, or extremely cold before I would be affected. I am also capable of creating topographical maps of the terrain I pass over, and possess optical camouflage for stealth reconnaissance.

I don't mind, but... wouldn't it be better to do in person?

[ Casey's just waiting for an answer on that before they make a move. If Bladewolf really can take readings from there, that would be awesome. ]

Possibly, but I do not want the full breadth of my capabilities known widely until I have a firmer understanding of the society here. Once I am more aware of the people and their intentions, I will reveal more of my capabilities.

[Bladewolf nods, before he seems to shimmer out of view, with only the vaguest outline of his form visible for a few seconds, before he shimmers back into view.]

Yes. Though not for long periods of time. The stealth module I am equipped with can overheat if left activated for too long.

Oh... right. Do you know the street you're on? Or could you find the Hotel? It opens into all the different sectors, so finding one of the entrances would get you there.

[ Casey starts to grin at the show of capability. ]

There is a man, where I come from. A...friend....you might say, who was made a weapon before he was old enough to choose for himself. He fights so that others are spared his fate. I assisted him for the same reason.

[ It's okay. Casey was pretty prepared just from the conversation and all of that, although they do have an immediate flailing response for a moment before it sinks in that this is just Bladewolf, the one they've been talking to. ]

Oh. Um—sorry. I understand. You're... crazy smart, more than some natural-born people I've known.

[ It's a compliment even if it might not sound it. Casey is somewhat under-average height at 5'9" but, to all physical appearances, appears to simply be a rather waifish young man. Late teens, early twenties at best. ]
