No,  not speak.  That doesn't really help any, with everything always being translated for us.  More like...read.  I was wondering...what languages everyone here can read?  Since written words have never been translated.  Not since I've been here.

I am fluent in several languages, ancient and modern. I am also...passable in a few others.

I can speak and read Gaelic, as well as Latin, but can also read Ogham.

I have to admit that I can only read Aurebesh, which is the transcribed form of Basic, the most commonly-used tongue in the galaxy. I can speak a number of others, but I've never tried to transcribe them in written form.

What is it exactly that you wish to read? Is there something written in another language you've found?

It's not a bad idea, though. We can never be too prepared, especially if whatever magic is translating things for us suddenly stops working. Though that's not so much an issue anyway with the written stuff, right?

What's...Esperanto? I've never heard of that language before.

And it doesn't matter so much if you think it can help or not. I'm mostly curious. There's been a lot of talk about languages lately. I wanted to know...just how many of them are being hidden by the translator magic that lets us all speak to each other.

But...the more I've been reading in the languages I already know, the more I wonder how many more are out there. And if there are...how many I might be able to learn.

English definitely seems to be the most commonly spoken language here. That's why I had to learn, even before I started learning kedanese.

Do you mind if I ask where you learned? Or did you family speak both?

The world is full of more languages than I care to count, but many of them are very similar to certain ways.

No, it's not. As far as I know, written as never been translated. Either in person, or over the Network.

That was one of the reasons why I had to start learning English. It seemed like everybody here at one point spoke it, but few of them spoke more than a few words of French.

I know. Like how Spanish and Portugese and Italian are all kind of similar.

That's why I'm mainly interested in the ones that are being spoken here. I know English is a big one. Probably almost as big as kedanese itself. A lot of the For--er, I mean, a lot of the non-local people seem to know it.

Yes, English is one of the dominant languages in my world, along with French and Mandarin.

In my world...or, at least, in my time...Japanese is the most common. Almost everyone in the world speaks it. Even the Space Colonies speak Japanese.

It all happened long before I was born, but I remember...being told that it was because the Colonies existed that our world was at war for so long.

I suppose...Mandarin might be next on the list. Or Latin.

Well, there are probably millions of different languages where I'm from, though we have a universal one too. I grew up with members of a race that weren't so good speaking it though, and had a good friend and first mate who was one later. They're Wookies and speak Shiryiiwook. Then I learned a little Huttese and Rodisn and one or two more working as a trader and stuff like that. Not always fluent but enough to do business.

If my friend's prissy protocol droid ever shows up, you oughtta talk to him. He's always saying he knows six million ways to communicate. And probably can annoy me in every one, but that's another story.
