✦ 002 ✦ [video]
[Zatanna is seen sitting at the desk in her room, looking contemplative about something. She has a pencil in one hand, idly chewing on the eraser in between moments of inspiration. Whatever she was drawing seems to have her mystified, though the actual drawing was just beyond the view of the camera.]
[Behind her, the open window lets in a faint breeze that stirs her hair. She starts to say something multiple times before the words finally make it out, unusually cautious and deliberate.]
Okay, by now, I'm pretty sure we all know the mainland does something to those of us with powers. But I was wondering...does anybody's feel...I don't know...different since coming here? On the turtle, I mean. Like...[another pause]...like maybe it's coming from a different place? Or works a little different than it used to?
[And, because she knows people will ask, she ends with a very nonchalant shrug.]
Just curious, is all.

So she gave this to you and didn't tell you what it did?
[Though... water. Could this mean there might be similar pendants for the other elements? Keeliai is sorted into elements. This might not be an accident.]

She said if I was as good in my trade as she thought, I'd be able to figure it out myself.
[None of this was a lie. Perhaps one or two additional details may have been excluded...but, from Zatanna's perspective, what other reason did she have to give her something at all? And they had formed a connection over their mutual abilities, however fleeting.]
It's not uncommon for older sorcerers to want to test the younger generation. Even my dad's pulled this one me once or twice before.
action
[If he sees her holding back on information, he doesn't say anything. Unfortunately, for a Bat, he can't help but see strings attached to a gift like this.]
Are you sure it's safe?
action
[She answers without really needing to think about it. At the same time, however, she didn't seem particularly concerned.]
That's why I'm still testing it. So far, it just seems like your basic, though slightly more powerful than usual, charm. Which means it's only as dangerous as the intent of the person carrying it.
action
Does anyone else know?
action
Just you.
action
Just... be careful, okay?
action
That's why I wanted to tell you. I figured somebody should know, in case something happened.
action
I know I'm totally useless at magic, but keep me in the loop, okay?
action
[She's not so much being sarcastic as she's simply making a point; their lives in general weren't exactly encouraging. Her experimenting with magic--something she's been doing her entire life--wasn't all that different from the dangers he regularly put himself in. But Robin always came out of it okay, and so would she.]
[She refused to think otherwise.]
You're already in the loop. Probably couldn't kick you out now if I tried.
action
He knew his worry was unnecessary and unwanted, but he still felt a faint twinge of it. If they'd been back home, with full support of at least the Team, he might feel a little more at ease, but...
Too many variables. Too much danger, from all sides.
But worrying wasn't going to do any good, so he decided to shove it to the back of his mind. He'd help her in his own way; that's all he could really do, isn't it?]
I don't know, you do a lot when you put your mind to it.
action
So do you.
[The least she could do was try to ease some of that worry.]
action
Thanks.
action
...you don't think I'm being overly paranoid, hiding it like this, do you?
[Yeah, yeah, asking a bat. But she needed to be reassured.]
action
action
[She slips the key back under the collar of her shirt, sighing as she brushes the hair from her face, tucking it behind her ears.]
So...that's it, I guess. Pretty much everything I know at this point.
action
Thanks for letting me know, though, Zatanna.
