[Victor looks a little annoyed when he turns on his console tonight. Behind him, the view of his suite is blocked by some rock. A big, talking rock to be exact. Santo's right there behind him.]

Hey, everyone. I've got a question for everyone that's familiar with superheroes. It's about the costumes. They're an important thing to have, right? For a lot of reasons like protecting and hiding secret identities.

But this guy [He jerks a thumb over his shoulder at Santo.] just says they're stupid.

Don't get me wrong, the costumes are cool but that's about it. Wearing one just to hide your identity is what's stupid. You don't see Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, or Hawkeye worried about people knowing who they are. Hell, Luke Cage doesn't even wear a costume and he kicks all kinds of ass!

Besides, you don't see any X-Men hiding behind a mask.

[Victor just rolls his eyes.]

Lots of X-Men have worn masks. [He shakes his head.] So what do you guys think? Costumes important for superheroes or not?

The answer is obviously not.

[Victor doesn't even bother replying. He just gives Santo a look.]

It's kind of hard to explain. It's got a lot more to do with belief than logic.

[He gives a little smile.] Sounds just like anything else magic there.

So it's not like spellcasting but something that just is? [He thinks for a moment and then takes a guess as an idea occurs to him.] Kind of like Thor?

Just something that is, yeah. That's a good way of putting it.

[ but the reference piques him ]

Like the Norse myth?

He's not just a myth. Thor's real. He's magic but not a wizard or witch.

Really? I'd like to meet him some day!

Really. I don't think he's on the turtle now, at least I haven't seen him yet and no one's mentioned him being here. But if he shows up, I'll point you to him.

[ look how pleased you've made him ]

[Vic smiles, happy to spread some joy.]

So what kind of powers do you have as a Guardian?

Actually, most of mine come from being the Spirit of Winter.

Spirit of Winter? So you have some ice and cold powers then? Cool. [A beat.] No pun intended there.

No, I have all the ice and cold powers.

[Victor laughs.] You sounded just like one of my teachers from back home there for a moment. He's got all those powers too.

Really? Is he a spirit too?

[He nods.] Really. And he's a mutant, not a spirit.

[ have a politely puzzled look ]

[Victor waits a moment before taking a breath.]

A mutant is a person born with a special gene. For the most part, it activates around puberty and gives them special powers. Like how I'm all green and spiky.

[ He'd noticed, but it hadn't actually been the first thing to register with him. Side effects of having friends who didn't fit the "normal human" spectrum. ]

That's really interesting. Are there a lot of them?

There are but...[He frowns.] Not as much of us as there used to be.

Oh. [ he hesitates ] Can I ask why?

[Victor takes a deep breath before he answers.]

There was...something happened. Something that caused most mutants to lose their powers and it...a lot of people died because of it. Ever since then, the people that already hated us just for being different started working harder to finish off the rest of us.

[ Jack is quiet for a moment, because nothing is really appropriate to say. ]

I'm sorry.

[Victor nods.]

Thanks...

[He looks away for a few moments and sighs.]

Things are getting better back home though.

That's good, at least.

[He nods.]

Yeah. I was back in school, my friends and I weren't being thrown under the bus and left to die in a ditch the first time it was convenient for the people in charge, and the school wasn't being attacked or destroyed nearly as often.
