[It's pretty early in the morning when Finnick shows up on the feed, looking a little bit like crap. Like he hasn't slept all night. Which, well. He really hasn't. Nightmares and everything. He scrubs a hand over his face before smiling for the feed.]

I'm starting to wonder what else could go wrong in this place. First, they're making copies of us [not that he can really blame them for wanting more of him around, come on now] and now things are going sour on the turtle. [A wry smile twists his lips now.] And they say to not panic while pushing us to our limits already. [He runs a hand through his hair.] They could probably give the Capitol a run for their money at this point.

[He goes to shut off the feed, muttering:] I'd kill for seaweed bread right now, though. [:'|]

[Thinking too much about dat ass, aren't you, Inara?

He takes the cup and smiles as he sips.] Tell me something about where you come from, Inara. [A pause.] Please.

[ YOU CAUGHT HER, FINNICK ]

Hm... [ she leans back and looks thoughtful for a moment. ]

I grew up on a planet called Sihnon; but about a year ago I left to rent a shuttle on a cargo ship called Serenity. [ she smiles over the rim of her cup. ]

She's really quite the ship. You'd like her, I think. The crew is -- a motley one, but I love them dearly despite their interests generally being in things like smuggling and black market trade.

So you left the planet entirely? [There's no way to not be awed by that, even if Finnick would have liked to keep his cool. Planetary travel, that's just...]

I do like ships, but I have a feeling that yours is entirely different than what I'd be used to. [A laugh.] I'm trying to imagine you among smugglers.

I did, yes.

[ She has to grin at him. First time for everything, Finnick. Inara enjoys seeing him awed. ]

Likely it is. I'm sure you would have enjoyed seeing it, though. [ but she does have to laugh with him. ]

It was an interesting assortment of people, make no mistake.

You know, I had never even thought about it. At least, not before coming here. [He snorts, leaning back in his seat.]. In Panem, you don't look up at the stars and wonder what it's like to be out there.

[He gives her a knowing look.] Oh, I know all about an assortment of people making things interesting. [It's the alliance they made back at the Quarter Quell that he's thinking of. They made a motley crew of their own.]

Panem. Is that where you are from?

[ Because they have not spoken much about their lives at home. ]

[Finnick nods.] The glorious nation of Panem, where your life is defined for you from birth. [A pause.] Or was before we rebelled against the president.

[suoxi]

[ Inara blinks. ]

Rebelled? I do not...think you've told me much about your home at all. [ she'd remember that. ]

[action]

[insecrets]

[He never says much to anyone about Panem, so he's not surprised.] It's not something I like to brag about. Home, I mean. [A pause.] For nearly a century, our president had a stranglehold on us. He'd force the children of the districts to fight to the death so that people wouldn't go to war again. They were an annual event called the Hunger Games. [A snort.] But we decided it was worth the risk anyway, to fight back.

That...is horrible.

[ and definitely not what she was expecting. ]

It certainly does sound like it was worth the risk. [ wars were fought all the time - Inara had seen one herself though she hadn't been in it. ]

[He nods slowly, smiling.] It was, but from what I hear now, it's over. Things have settled down. [He couldn't see that ending, but at least he knows he helped to contribute to it in some way.] Peace is a hard won victory.
