So, I am trapped between Life and Death, and barred from reentering either. [The face on the screen is young- no more than eighteen- and deathly pale, save for a strange sunburn around her left eye. She pauses, draws herself up, and speaks with as much authority as she can muster, though Sabriel is hiding considerable exhaustion.]

If anyone here has some knowledge of necromancy, I wish to speak with them, as well as anyone who can tell me more about this place without insisting "That's the Emperor's business" [And Sabriel can't quite contain her exasperation as she utters that phrase.] , I would be grateful. I don't have much of the local currency, but I have some knowledge of Charter Magic-[And there's a long, hesitant pause before she begins to speak again, in a tone that's halfway between reluctant and reassuring.] And of necromancy- but I do not raise the Dead, I put them to rest. I am willing to trade my services in such for more information, particularly about whatever mechanism is preventing me from walking into Life and Death, and if this land has ever been troubled by the Dead. [And somehow, you can just hear the capital letters in her speech.]

Probably wise- however rude your demand might be. You wouldn't ask someone to take their bandages off if it pleased you, would you? [ Now he is being purposefully antagonists, as is his wont. ]

I doubt you're injured underneath that mask. [Sabriel is starting to realize she's being wound up.]

In any case, I might be willing to tell you more about Death, provided you let me know who- or what- I am speaking too.

I doubt you're injured beneath your hair but I'm not asking you to cut it off. [ That is a mutual cognizance. ]

Forgive me [ He sounds about as rueful as you might expect. ] I am Amon; I work in the Earth Sector free clinic. Death is nothing new to me, but neither are a lot of things I seek a different perspective on.

Are you a doctor? [Because he really doesn't look like one, to Sabriel's eyes. Not unless he's an extremely shady one. But Sabrel will give him something, at least.]

Death is- a vast river, that flows through nine precincts. The spirits of the dead are carried on it to whatever lies beyond, and some of the living can send their spirits into it.

A medic. [ And one who was not exactly coming in accredited, but he wasn't making any boasts that would give cause for concern. Or more pressingly, suspicion. ]

Are you speaking poetically, or is there anything more you can tell me that doesn't leave me feeling inclined to see if you're fevered?

I'm speaking literally, and I am certainly not ill. [Sabriel's just a tiny bit irritable, because it seems much more plausible to her than a giant turtle.]

Do you come from a place without magic. [Because doesn't everyone with magic know what necromancers can do?]

No it does not. [ Amon is terse but doesn't specify if he is denying Sabriel's defence of her sanity or the existence of magic in his world. In his opinion the latter is certainly true; he would never equate bending or the religious connotations of the spirits with something like magic. For good, or ill there was nothing 'magical' about any of it. ]

How long have you been here?

Several hours, I think. I lost track of time while they were bringing me to this flat. [Sabriel's taken a little off guard by such a mundane question.]

Have you even rested? Eaten? [ The line of questioning aren't wholly bleeding heart if at all; he is admittedly curious to see if she isn't delirious. ]

I rested on the journey here, and yes, I have eaten. [Sabriel's just percieving it as condescension, and is rapidly becoming more irate.]

Thank you for your concern, but I don't need a nursemaid.
