[Well, look who came out of his sulk! Sei looks mildly amused and seems to have contracted a chronic case of shirtlessness, so please enjoy the nasty burn scars up his left arm and the chiseled physique.]

...You know, where I'm from, there's usually a lot less small children asking strangers for candy and a lot more dark rituals and insanity-causing booze on Halloween. I'm gonna go ahead and say this is an improvement. The costumes are the same either way, though.

[Just saying, he finds this all mildly mystifying.]

But hey, nevermind that, I had a more important question; who does a guy have to sleep with around here to find someone willing to make a piano? And while I'm at it, what's the music like where you're all from? I could stand to despair the state of the arts some more.

The need for my project comes sooner than anticipated. [his mouth is a thin line. surprises are great, but not necessarily like this.] Something has the gangs in the Earth and Metal Sectors riled up, and my associates there need help. More than that, the police need help -- stretched as thin across the sectors as they are, I'm not sure they…

[can get to all civilians in time? can quell the fighting before people get injured? or die? the possibilities are more frightening than what'll likely happen, but one can never be sure...

he shakes his head.]
Over the past year kedan opinion of us has changed for the better, but there is still progress to be made. If any of you have wanted to use your abilities to make an even greater difference with them, now is your chance to do so. [and oh, there'll be money of course, but most of you would probably just do it out of the goodness of your own hearts, eh?]

I'll be overseeing things from my residence in the Fire Sector, in building 3C. I can take any time I have to answer questions here, but please -- if you're interested in helping, come see me in person as soon as possible.

[Eshai looks, for lack of a better word, like hell. She's been holed up in her palace, but oh, she has not been idle, and the dark bruises beneath her eyes tell a story of sleepless nights and candles burnt at both ends. Her elbows are braced on the desk, and the style of her clothing is very much severe and lacking in ornamentation, her sleeves are rolled to her biceps.

She gives the camera a glare, and then reaches up to tuck a wisp of graying hair behind one ear.]

I've expanded and strengthened the barrier. I don't yet have the exact dimensions, so if anyone who can fly or swim would like to do some exploring for me, I would consider it very much a-- [her mouth ticks into a firm, unhappy frown] -- personal favour. It should extend down to the ocean floor, and upwards nearly to the mesosphere. Outward directions are where I lack the most data, but any measurements are helpful.

I will not mince words. Our enemy has gained a foothold in Keeliai. It's my hope that this will keep it at bay a while longer. Additionally, this will allow us greater access to the mainland areas we come in contact with. Asti, [Her expression shows her displeasure at the populace now knowing and freely using that name.] is headed for colder waters, but with the increased scope of the barrier, we'll be seeing land more often. Those of you who can fly, or design mechanical boats or flying crafts, you should be on the lookout for any opportunities. With the creature freed, and wreaking havoc among the realm of Life, you can expect to see war and destruction wherever we make contact with the outside. Be prepared for it.

[Someone off screen hands her a cup of something that steams faintly, she takes it with a nod of thanks, but does not drink.]

As I'm certain some of you've been whispering about in dark corners, no. You are not the first group of individuals I've brought to Keeliai. The kedan were the first, that was centuries ago. There have been other sets of heroes. The last time was when Sinbrilee sank, and I thought...

[Her brow creases. She takes a drink, now, of that steaming beverage.]

Perhaps the enemy was defeated at that time. Eighteen months ago, I was proven incorrect. You may not be here because you want to be or would otherwise choose to be, but the enemy will not stop with Konryu. It has tarried here, because the life energy provided by the Great Turtles satiates it like nothing ever has. It wants Asti, but once it's killed him, it will move on to other worlds. Across the fabric of space and time, it will come to where each of you live in turn. It may be centuries before you're born, or millennia after you've died, but it will come. You want to know why you're here? That's why. We are making a stand. I have done my best to keep you safe, but believe me when I say your lives are insignificant compared to Asti's, and if what it takes to stop our enemy is the blood sacrifice of each and every one of you, I will do it unflinching.

But if you survive, by some miracle, I have put certain... failsafes in place, that will send each of you home. This assumes that I do not survive the coming battle. Should I, I will return each of you to your homeworlds personally. You have my word. If we all die, well. It renders the consideration moot. Bodies are in rather short supply after the destruction of our cloning facilities, so to those of you assuming recklessness is the answer, consider this. When you die here, it falls to me to anchor your soul and bring you back. And there are those among you that have done little to endear yourselves to me. Sell your lives dearly if you must, but do not be fools.

And for the love of turtles, if any of you so much as think to ask me the same useless million questions because you cannot think to collaborate or share your knowledge, I will keelhaul those responsible. I trust we understand one another.

[ and, believe it or not, he doesn't look the littlest bit upset about it. sometimes quiet is good! quiet means that he's spent of a lot of time cooped up in his lab, but it also means that a malicious entity of literally unspeakable evil isn't going around and slashing up people in their nightmares. or doing whatever it does. ]

--but, that being said, I don't think anyone would disagree with me when I say that now's not the time to get complacent. And for those of us looking to really try and make a difference here, this is our best opportunity to do so.

I have a few acquaintances in the kedan community who're willing to take on Foreigner help for a number of tasks our talents may be… More suited to completing. [ us foreigners and our crazy powers, am i right? ] They offer compensation, of course, and the promise of more to come should everything go smoothly.

[Time for your scheduled public service announcement. At his console, Richard's arms are folded and his tone level. After talking to Sadie, he has realized that they can't continue with people being ignorant of the situation.]

For those who aren't yet aware, in Sinbrilee, there are marble arches with runes on them. The gateways with runs that seem to glow with a faint light lead to the realm of Dreaming, while the gates to Death have runes oozing a black substance.

Be careful of both. The worlds both shape themselves to the minds of those within. Dreaming can be pleasant, if you are in such a state of mind, but if you are not, it can be cruel. Death is always malicious. If you come to harm in either realm, that injury may prove to be very real. [Hidden in the folds of his sleeves, his hand tightens into a fist.] In at least one case, an injury has been. It's most likely that healing magic won't work there, nor any other abilities to protect you that require Tu Vishan's energy to function.

[Richard unfolds his arms so he can brush his bangs from his eyes.] I'd like to know if anyone has done any research on the gateways themselves or the realms beyond. Given that one seems the home territory of the being we've been brought here to handle, some understanding of how to move in and out of it could be an advantage.

[When the video starts, Pete's...well, managing. He's managed to make most of his suite tribble-free, save for a few currently stuffed into what looks to be an empty aquarium of some kind he has sitting on his desk.]

So, I know a lot of us are in a hurry to get these things off the Turtle as quickly as possible, or kill them off or eat them or whatever, but...has anyone looked into whether or not keeping a few for research would be feasible?

I mean, they reproduce quickly, and in pretty big numbers. I'm not talking about using them for anything horrible, but it seems like they could be a pretty good substitute for lab rats. And if we kept them properly contained, we'd never have to worry about running out of them.

[Obviously, some precautions would have to be taken on the part of the researchers, but it probably wouldn't be impossible. In fact, at that moment, the trio of tribbles inside the aquarium began to make another series of trilling noises, forcing Pete to momentarily close his eyes and try and block out the unwelcome sound. Once they're finished, he takes a deep breath and continues, with some degree of extra effort.]

I'm not talking about testing anything horrible on them, obviously. But if data gathered from them can be applied to human subjects, it could be a great way to test local medicines and remedies without actually having to jump straight to human testing and risk poisoning someone or triggering an allergic reaction or something. I know Wayne Enterprises already started pharmaceutical work, and we could probably convince Dr. Banner to expand the hydroponics garden to allow us to grow any plants needed for that sort of testing. Maybe even a little extra food for them, so they aren't consuming anything meant for the rest of us.

[More trilling interrupts him now, and he does seem to finally give in. Reluctantly. He gets up and leaves the frame for a moment, returning later with some grains and torn up pieces of bread to drop into the aquarium. He doesn't know if the noise means they're hungry, he just knows the ones he caught tend to stop making that noise when they're eating.]

...sorry about that. Anyway, I don't really know if anyone's willing to try it out, or if it'll even work. But it's worth a try, right? I mean, it's better than just killing all of them, and definitely better than just letting them wreak havoc on the ecosystem and eat all our food, right? Besides, it's a way better plan than throwing them off the turtle with notes on their back. I mean, if even a handful of these things adapt to marine life, with as fast as they reproduce we're basically talking about taking one ecological disaster and making a bigger one we're in no position to stop. And that's not even considering what might happen if they're carrying any sort of parasite that could do the same...

[Seriously guys, stop chucking them in the water. Eventually they won't be able to be retrieved, and then who knows what's going to happen. Literally nothing about that scenario sounds like a good idea to Peter here.]

[The video feed turns on to flowers. Flowers in boquets. Flowers in vases. some flowers clearly set aside for other purposes. Flowers on tribbles. Flower crowns and leis on a swizard who looks way too pleased with herself. Asbel's suite is full of them, or at least the view from his console, and he looks...well, significantly less frazzled than he had in getting them home, but that's not saying much.]

...So I don't suppose, in the middle of all this, anyone needs some flowers? Flower crowns, boquets, home decoration...anything like that.

[He coughs, faintly, before moving on.]

Actually, on that note, does anyone have any suggestions for what to do with these...? I have way more than I need for seeds or flower tea.

[He pauses and watches a tribble just sit amongst the flowers and coo, and sighs heavily before ending the video.]

Let's skip the formalities and the obvious. [That 'obvious' reference being related to Tu Vishan coming to a stop and all powers reduced to nothing.] Time for you Foreigners to step up to bat.

[A breath in, a breath out; it's no easy to speak about what is going on.]

It's name is Malicant and it's here. Tu Vishan is too sick, too fast; the only thing strong enough to do that is Malicant. We've seen it before and it wasn't easy to push back. Killed too many, came too close with the rest, but we did it. For a time. I don't have more than that. This thing takes whatever form it wants and uses whatever means it fancies to destroy. That's it. That's what I know.

[He focuses solely on the screen.]

I trust you with the name, but don't spread it around. We don't need widespread panic in the kedan -- it'll only make your jobs harder and its power stronger.

[That's right: Your jobs. Its power.]

This won't be glamorous, but if Malicant went about its business openly, then we wouldn't be stuck here. [He'd have personally gutted it if it did. Twice.] I've got a handful of leads -- [A wry, bitter smile.] conspiracies, you'll think -- and I need you to follow-up on them. Track down the source and uncover what's wrong, then fix it. That's why you're here, so stop whining about having nothing to do.

Want to help? Report in at the precinct station at the heart of Keeliai and tell them I sent you. Bring a team or you'll be put on one, then briefed on a lead I need you to look into. Do whatever you need to get the job done.

It's a long shot, but it's all we got. [He reaches for the console's controls, then pauses.] And first one to say I hid it ought to save us all the time and just jump off the turtle. You know what I do -- anything more, and you'd think it could be predicted. It can't. [He kills the feed.]

When I arrived here, I assumed the barrier had been meant to keep us in and that the Emperor controlled it. By now, I think it's obvious that that's not the case. The barrier is meant to keep things out. When Tu Vishan dove underwater, the barrier stayed up and held back the jingashi. But they broke through and, judging by the kedans' reactions, that had never happened before. In fact, I asked around. It hasn't ever happened before, not until lately.

Point two: a satellite falls out of the sky, breaks through the barrier, and lands on Tu Vishan. First of all, this suggest that there is-- or was-- some kind of long-distance communication technology. It also suggests that the barrier is weakening even more. Before, it took the stress of thousands of jingashi to weaken the barrier. Now all it takes is debris. Big debris, sure, but decidedly less stress than the jingashi.

As for the Emperor, it's possible she's contributing power to maintain the barrier, but it doesn't originate from her. Tu Vishan is the one maintaining it.

I know everyone's concerned about what's coming, but we can't let that distract us completely from the big picture. My point is that we need to slow down and rethink what we think we know. Since the barrier is our first line of defense against any outside invasion, let's start there. What do we know, what do we think we know, and how can that help us?

[There is a very disgruntled dragon peering at the camera. She’s a bit of a terrifying sight, being large and red and spiky and ...well, there’s definitely steam coming out of those spikes. She leans close and nudges the screen carefully with her nose, then settles back.]

This place seems very dull to me, I cannot imagine why I was brought here if there is nothing interesting, at all, going on. There is not even a proper aerial corps or a navy, so how is one supposed to gain capital? It is very rude to be snatched up out of one’s home, you know, and placed upon the back of a large turtle without so much as a by-your-leave. [There’s a bit of a huff, and steam obscures the camera for a moment, and then Iskierka has subsided into a sulky pile of curls.]

Granby will certainly be asking after me, even if what the people say here is so, that we are in-between. [And there’s another annoyed little grumble. She has never had patience for this sort of thing.]

I have already lost track of him once, I shall not do so again. Pray, has anyone seen a tall, dark-haired man about? He would be in a fine coat -- gold braid and green, and he is called John Granby. I suppose it's too much to ask that whatever's dropping all this incredible technology on our heads continues to do so. [ a dismissive little wave. ] Hordes of hostile spirits aside, of course. Not a situation any of us should hope to repeat, but it certainly is hard to argue with the payoff...

[ "payoff" indeed. qilby's hat takes up most of the screen, but under a horn a bit of burnished metal or mechanical something-or-other may be visible. apparently he's put his little botany project on the backburner since some new toys fell out of the sky.

and although he'd normally be all for showing off what it is he's tinkering with, he's got a more pressing matter at hand. ]

It's rather short-sighted, in retrospect-- but until now, I hadn't truly considered the scope of the universe outside the turtle's shell. Docking on the mainland is one thing, but the stars are quite another. [ he shakes his head almost mournfully. ] But Tu Vishan sustains us yet, and it seems to be quite impossible to travel very far beyond his presence.

Several months have passed, and I still know so little-- have seen so little of this world. The idea that I may never know more than what I'm told is... Disheartening. [He selects the video function, at ease with the technology. Regally dressed and with a genial smile, Richard addresses the network.] Greetings, guests of Keeliai. I'm Richard. I look forward to meeting you all.

[There is no insincerity to him. He speaks with a genuine, if measured warmth. He likes people, generally. But Richard has thought through what he wished to say, and he has more important matters than social ones.]

Salutations aside, I have a few points of inquiry that I hoped someone could be of help with. First, a question of home. Though I was comforted to hear the reassurances of our hosts, I must ask if we foreigners have any confirmation of our own that our worlds do not suffer our absence while we are here. It is of some concern. [He doesn't take the Emperor's word for it. Sorry, Eshai!]

The second matter is one of occupation. It is my understanding that we are asked to contribute through some form of work. While I am happy to do so, I'm afraid I . . . don't know how one would attain employment. [Royalty lessons don't include lessons on resumes, whoops. He pushes aside the awkwardness with that same geniality as before.] I'd be grateful for any advice or suggestions.

[His expression becomes more grave now. This last is the most worrying to him.] Finally, and most importantly, I wish to know about the eleth here. I posed my questions to the kedan, but they did not seem to understand. Is it known what means this planet uses to channel eleth? I have heard no mention of cryas or valkines, and Tu Vishan's current state begins to bear a disturbing resemblance to that of a planet I visited where the eleth had gone almost dry.

[Richard pauses a moment, and then smiles again, but that smile is somewhat more grave now, weighted by his last query.] Thank you for listening. I warmly anticipate your responses.

[And with that, he shuts off the feed. Somehow, that was even more difficult than making public speeches.]

[Annabeth’s sitting at a cafe in the Fire Sector, blonde hair its usual mess of curls when the console turns on; she glances at something off screen for a few seconds before coming back into focus. There's a tall, thin, somewhat scraggly looking but composed middle-aged man standing beside and a little behind her, letting her take center on the camera. You might recognize him as Bruce Banner, if he remembered to introduce himself.]

Unless you're new or living under a rock, the rationing's back in full swing with pretty unfortunate long term implications. We're fine now, whether you’re accustomed to a higher lifestyle or otherwise, but probably not for said long term if this keeps up. That's where hydroponics comes in. If you don't know - [Insert brief but simultaneously detailed enough explanation of hydroponics here.] We've already figured out the logistics and mechanics of developing such a garden, hopefully with a grand enough scale to actually be useful and successful. [Brief pause, and she points upward over her shoulder.] It was his idea.

[He nods on cue.] Uh, hi. I'm... Bruce Banner. [He does look kind of uncomfortable giving out his name, but forges on.] Usually I work in physics or biochemistry, but with some help I've managed to put together a feasible work proposal for the set up. [He starts to gain speed and smoothness as he gets into the technical aspect.] The critical point here is that with an isolated indoor filtration system for the water, and no use of soil, we can prevent the widespread sickness from affecting our crops. We'd just have to be careful about cross-contamination.

I put out some feelers, and... the kedan are pretty interested in working with us. So we'd have a lot of local support. We can't pay anyone, because we don't plan on making any money off of it. The food would be for everyone. [He glances over at Annabeth, handing it off again.]

[She picks up with ease.] It'll be run like a co-op - you work some, you'll get some. There's a lot to potentially do beyond just the set up, so don't feel like you're automatically excluded if you don't understand the more technical or scientific aspects. [It’s not like she gets them all herself either; Annabeth just sort of found herself taking the reins like she do and ordering people around.] Basically, we're looking for volunteers, from any interested party. To keep it functioning, it'll probably require a lot of upkeep - so there's not really a limit here either, since it'll need a fairly regular commitment. If we get enough people involved, the garden should essentially run itself. And I know over half the population is pressed over food shortages, so yes, should this expand, some of that will be quelled.

[Level and unhurried, Bruce wraps up with,] Right now we're just looking for a preliminary estimate of involvement. A place to start. So, let us know if you're interested. [A beat of silence, before he adds,] Thanks for listening?

[Annabeth glances up at him with a bit of a face, but that’s about all she does - no goodbyes from her before she cuts the feed.]

[Talia has been keeping relatively quiet over the network, but Jack's post caught her attention while she was checking up on things and she responds with a post of her own after gathering her thoughts.]

Hello... my name is Talia and I've had the pleasure of meeting a few of you since my rather rough arrival. [If by rough she meant near death, but that was a trivial matter right now.] As has been brought to your attention already, our hosts appear to be growing ever more impatient with us. In some areas this is as a simple as not offering us jobs, or refusing us service... In other areas, I have been physically jostled aside and I've little doubt that others have suffered similarly. I know rationing and I understand the stress that it puts upon a people, let alone a people that are 'suffering' unexpected guests. This is something more and it concerns me...

[She exhales slowly, because admitting to this had caused her problems in the past and directly caused her to be ostracized and targeted... needless to say, she was wary, but knew it was knowledge that needed to be shared.]

I would like it known that I am an Empath and a Mind Healer. One of the things this grants me is the ability to read the emotions of others and, if I choose, to sway them. The kedan are restless and they are angrier by the day... I'm the strongest Empath in my kingdom, but not even I can manage the entire expanse of Tu Vishan by myself at one time. I have been able to keep tempers calm around the Water Sector, but if you've need of me anywhere, at any time, you've but to send for me and I will come.

Otherwise, I will be making circuits throughout the Sectors and offering what help I may with my abilities. [And she'd continue to do so until she ran herself to the ground or the trouble came to an end.]

[ Jack is sitting crosslegged on the chair, his Wood suite behind him backlit by the console screen. He looks pensive and it's taken him the better part of an hour to decide whether he should even bring this up, but it's been nagging at him like a stubborn itch that won't go away. He opts for video to reach the most people but as there are a number of new arrivals, the jury is still out on who can see him -- whether they'll see nothing but hear his voice, or those who will think this is an empty, glitched feed. ]

Has anyone else noticed lately that the kedan seem a little... different?

It's been a few weeks now and I thought it was just because the rationing had everyone on edge but I've had a bunch of them tell me they don't want me doing their deliveries any more, even after I offered to do them for free if they didn't have spare juulan.

[ an uncomfortable pause, then Jack's shoulders roll in a shrug of feigned nonchalance ]

[When the video opens on Bruce, much of his 'friendly neighborhood playboy' demeanour is muted. He looks a little more serious than normal, though his tone and expression remain congenial enough.]

As some of you may have noticed, passports have been delivered to our suites. It's very likely that these herald another landfall, and given the fact that our population is significantly increased from what it was in November, I'd like to warn people about what we might encounter.

[Attached is a file, landfall.doc. It contains things like details on the llothi, the mausoleum, the ruins, the temperature, sorts of plants found, soil samples, etc.]

You have Miranda Lawson to thank for those. Sadly, she's no longer among us, but I doubt she'd want her research to go to waste.

[A slight pause, barely notable before he continues.]

And that brings me to my second point of business. At one time, a foreigner was keeping a list of people we might be looking for in the event that they arrive. However, I think it's past due we started a compilation of the names of those that have left us. Since disappearing from this place seems an almost instantaneous process, it could be weeks or even months before we become aware of some people's departure, and I believe that process is best expedited for everyone's sake. Most recently, at least to my knowledge, we've lost Miranda Lawson, Favrielle nό Eglantine and Lina Inverse.

[Not mentioning Jason Todd? Not mentioning Jason Todd.]

I'd appreciate any other names you might have.

Additionally, given the current state of Keeliai, I think it's an opportune time to rekindle the idea for a Foreigner-lead council. Councilman Tarrlok, a word to that effect? I think an elected representative from each Sector would be a good place to start.

And if there is anyone well-suited to the role, I'm happy to hold nominations.
