001 ; Video

[ A large man that could politely only be described as intense comes into view. Silence as he first, and almost with a sort of methodical intent, straightens the tie and lapels of his dark grey business suit before he makes any sign he means to address the network. The entire display, while mundane, feels scripted.

His voice is deep, and disarmingly calm.

My name is Orion Pax; I would introduce myself as former police captain but as this is neither my jurisdiction nor planet then you may simply know me as Orion. Making mention of this was relevant to me because I've found myself in something of a warzone.

Our hosts were kind enough to fill me in on the details with special mention to a series of catastrophes predating my arrival. While I have no intention of diminishing the accomplishments of foreigners who have put their necks out for this place in the past - I find it distressing this Emperor continues her unorthodox recruitment process when the worst has apparently already passed.

I would be grateful to any fellow foreigner willing to commiserate past and current events with an old cop. Thank you.

If you've gotten through these crude encryptions then I'm going to assume you're either one of mine, or coming from the other side of the fence.

If the former then, while you no longer are expected to answer to me directly, I would appreciate a head count.

If the latter? Well then we might have a problem.

I don't think this is anyone's planet.

[With a touch of dry amusement:] In any case, I suppose I should welcome you to the Keeliai precinct. You're not the only former police officer here.

[He gets a snort of amusement.]

The name's Lin. Former chief of police in Republic City--but you're right. It doesn't mean anything here. From what I've seen, the force is closed to non-kedan. The closest thing we have to foreigner police is a small taskforce led by a man who somehow managed to get special dispensation from the Emperor.

Assuming you're still interested in maintaining your former career, of course.

Well. I can't say working outside the law doesn't have its advantages. Especially when the system's moving a little too slowly for you.

[It's a half-serious confession, but there's understanding in the voice. The feeling's a little too familiar for comfort right now.]

That would require the existence of a system to begin with. It's hard to talk rank when most of us have only been here a few months at most.

His name's Javert, and from what I've seen, the foreigner input from his so-called division is essentially limited to gruntwork. Putting up placards, going through forms, that kind of thing. All in all, it sounds like peripheral support to me.

Still, the local gangs are occasionally a little more than the police can handle, so it's not all deskwork.
