The need for my project comes sooner than anticipated. More than that, the police need help -- stretched as thin across the sectors as they are, I'm not sure they…

[can get to all civilians in time? can quell the fighting before people get injured? or die? the possibilities are more frightening than what'll likely happen, but one can never be sure...

he shakes his head.] Over the past year kedan opinion of us has changed for the better, but there is still progress to be made. If any of you have wanted to use your abilities to make an even greater difference with them, now is your chance to do so. [and oh, there'll be money of course, but most of you would probably just do it out of the goodness of your own hearts, eh?]

What do you mean by "something" has stirred them up?

[he waves his hand dismissively.] All signs point towards a territorial dispute, or perhaps a disagreement over property... It doesn't take too much to put these groups at each other's throats.

And those things didn't just crop up overnight, they're ongoing issues.

[ A muted sigh; she'll probably have to do some surveillance. ]

[a slow nod.] Ongoing issues that will take a little more than a few days and a handful of charitable souls to solve. And unfortunately we, as relatively new arrivals to this world, are a little behind the curve with the complex local gang politics.

[yes, even as riveting as it sounds. must be why qilby'd always preferred his labs: people are just far too messy.]

Maybe someone should join one.

[ Is she joking? Tone hasn't changed. ]

Oh, now there's an idea. I'd make a rather convincing gangster, wouldn't I?

I would surely take the gang world by storm. Pity that I have to stay here behind a desk, but alas, I am needed here more.

[ Raven's gaze turns curious but more serious, leaving the jesting behind. ]

What about the police force? I know there is one but they're very low key.

Not that I claim to know much about the activities of this world's police force-- but I imagine they are more concerned with the dangers closer to the palace and their Emperor.

[literally and figuratively. not every enemy is as overt as a knife in a gangster's hand; everyone here should know that firsthand.]

And you don't think a fractured community has repercussions to its rulers?

If I didn't, I wouldn't be spending precious time and energy to help hold that community together, would I?

I suppose not.

From what I understand, gang members are not overly concerned with whose steps they fight upon.

[but hey, he's just a ten thousand year-old space king, so what does he know? the dryness in his tone is obvious.]

Anything would be appreciated-- but if you choose to operate on your own, do take credit for your good deeds. Let the kedan know a Foreigner helped them. [that's what this is all about!]

[and that gets a laugh out of him, assuming it's just some boast about skill or what-not. he can't exactly tell he's talking to someone who's basically literally made out of stone.]

You weren't kidding about not being one for false modesty. Very well, then-- as long as you're sure.

[Barry's voice is warily curious when he replies. The mention of 'police' had naturally caught his ear, but the request for assistance (of a sort) had drawn him as well.]

What type of project are you talking about.

A sort of ongoing, working partnership with the kedan. So much of our aid to them is rendered only in particularly dire times-- [like when an all-powerful probably demonic entity threatens to consume everything] --and so I hope that by acting as a liaison, I can give everyone more excuses to work with the people on a more day-to-day basis.

[not that gang wars are really "day-to-day," ahem. but once that's dealt with...]

Are you really sure that should be our first priority, given recent events?

[Not that he disagrees! This is simply an interesting area of focus, all things considered, and he's curious as to the reasons behind it all.]

Recent events such as the last crisis of nearly four months ago? [his pleasant tone doesn't exactly line up with the sharp sarcasm of the words themselves, but that... probably doesn't mean anything. hear that smile in his voice? he's smiling!] Believe me, I've not forgotten them.

Nor have I've forgotten how much of the rot came from within the very city we were brought here to protect. [a brief pause.] No, I suppose involving ourselves in the kedan community is not our first priority-- but I do believe it to be a priority.

It should be. People tend to forget that daily, every day events - and the people that experience them - matter just as much as big crises.

[ his voice is softer as he says it. that's pretty much been his line of work for the past decade, after all. it means a lot to him. which is probably why his next words aren't any sort of surprise. ]

So all we need to do if we want to help is visit you in person?

[ seems easy enough to do. ]

[a short silence. was he being tested just now? well! being on the receiving end isn't quite as fun, he has to admit.

he clears his throat.] Aah-- yes. The network is convenient, of course, but some of the jobs' details are better dispensed in-person. And of course, there's also the matter of a reward.

Otherwise, I haven't yet found a reason to turn away anyone willing to help. [yet.]

Helping out is all the reward I need.

[aka sry Quilby you're stuck with a guy who is still a little too idealistic for his own good. Of course, as he says that he's frowning, because while helping out is all well and good, he'd rather not be helping out if it involves doing questionable underground jobs.]

I trust my contacts completely. They would not ask me for help in any matter outside this world's law-- you needn't worry about that.

Sorry. I work as part of the police department back home [technically] so it's my job to enforce the law. But I apologize if I offended you.

[oversensitive. careful, don't sound too defensive--

he releases a long, pent up breath, and when he speaks again his tone has softened audibly.] No apology is needed-- forgive me. It's been millennia since I've dealt with this sort of pressure, and I... Haven't quite reacclimatized myself yet.

Barry cocks his head, curious. For all his time spent with the League fighting beings of both a terrestrial and extraterrestrial nature, he's had surprisingly little contact with those of advanced lifespans. A god, perhaps? But that would mean he's been greatly underestimating the forces that be that brought them here and he's not quite so willing to do that yet.]
