[Well this sure is a video post. It opens on Kidd, who's looking rather casually bored, dressed up in all the stolen finery one might expect of a pirate. His accent is vaguely British-y, and his tone is casually bored.]

I've heard tell this turtle of ours stops off at locations along the course of its journey. And these shores— would anyone say they at all resemble the Caribbean? Nassau, perhaps?

[He assumes otherwise, but it never hurts to ferret out little bits of information. If nothing else, mention of Nassau might weed out any who know the region and what it stands for. Stood for. He cocks his head to one side, there's maybe a hint of something predatory to his expression.]

I find it curious, aye, to be plain, that we can be so long at sea without fear of outside attack. Pirates, and the like. This place is grand enough, but hardly impregnable. Has anyone considered proper fortifications for it t'all? A blockade, perhaps, or cannons? Or something a sight more modern, I understand there's all manner of things not common to my era.

[oh my god this is more pirate talk, isn't it. This sounds like something that could have came from a book. Except it's real, and Ellie is grinning, as she tries to answer back.

Aye! But there is a barrier over yonder, can't nothing get through it, or so I've heard. And I've heard that a lot, let's be honest.

Well, I tried. [she grins at the console, not even the least bit ashamed of her horrible accent, though she does drop it to start speaking normally]

So, you're a pirate, right? We're getting a rush of pirates?

I'd not call us a rush, but there's a fair few of us, aye. You spoke with Anne, I reckon? You're Ellie.

Damn. [she whistles] Word travels fa-a-ast. Yeah, I'm Ellie. Pleasure to meetcha.

Well, okay, it's not a rush. But it's more than we had before, you know?

[With slight amusement,]

I was in the room as you spoke to Anne. No mystery or magic to it, nor travelling words.

[But yes it is a thing tiny child adoption haaay. Kidd chuckles, just a bit.]

We're just people, lass. Same as any other. I was with the King's Navy before I ever lifted a hand to piracy.

King's Navy? [gonna have to back up for her on that-- the concept of pirates is one she only understands through terrible puns, and a navy proper is even more foreign to her] Sorry, boats are kiiiiind of not used that much back home, so... What's that? Who's the king?

The King of Great Britain and Ireland? George the First?

[How can someone know about pirates and not about royalty how can this possibly be a thing? ... Although if he was to be perfectly honest with himself, Kidd's almost pleasantly vindicated at the idea.]

[she shrugs]

History class kind of sucked. There wasn't a lot of history actually going on. Yeeeah...

Fuck, actually, I'm not all that up to date on history period. So, sorry if I say anything stupid.

You ain't missing out on much, love. Fat lot of tyrants they were, no one worth bending your knee to.

[It's a casual, flippant statement. Piracy would never have taken the hold it did if the monarchs gave a tinker's damn about the smallfolk they called countrymen, anyway. Sure, the issue's more complicated than that, but the truth is, desperate men do desperate things in any age.]

There's no need to apologize for an incomplete education. I'm surprised you had schooling at all.

[Most women kind of didn't, and Ellie isn't striking Kidd as being a lady proper.]

[oh she didn't have much schooling. As she got older and more suited to manual labor, that tended to take up most of her time not day dreaming, sneaking out, or reading. School had been definitely pushed to the backburners]

Man, I'm surprised too. Sometimes, all I fucking did was clean shit all day.

So, okay, not knowing those guys is okay, though. I can run with that.

So what do you know of history, then?

[like she cares about the sneaky history update! She just squints as she tries to think back to her weak history lessons. The events were pretty simple]

British colonies, Boston Tea Party, Revolution, and then America became its own country. Then there was a civil war. Then a bigger world war, followed by a bigger world war, and then we went to space, annnnd then the world went to shit.

In a nutshell, that's, what, 200 years of history? Maybe 300?

[It's all things for which Kidd has no frame of reference, but he marks them down regardless. Being ignorant is a state in which you find yourself by choice, mostlike, and it's never somewhere he's been comfortable to rest for long. Nothing is true, everything is permitted. It's by questioning the world around you that you come to the foundation of the words, the roots from which they grew, twisted.]
