Voice;

Forgive my candid speech, but a situation was recently brought to my attention. While I feel the content may be upsetting to some, it can not go unaddressed.

There is, to the best of my knowledge, no contingency plan should the turtle sicken further. Nor in the case that the situation with the Kedan grows intolerable. In either case, if we are away from land, which seems likely, there is nowhere for anyone to go. We would be, in effect, marooned.

What we need is a proper ship, or ideally, a fleet, to support the population in the instance that the turtle is no longer inhabitable. Am I correct in assuming that no one has begun this undertaking? As we are currently experiencing a time of plenty, it seems foolish to delay beginning any longer.

[It is a little unusual for him to feel smug about a reaction as extreme as this one, since he is normally very careful about not frightening anyone, but then again the man was laughing at him, and the Corps, so Temeraire cannot say he feels very sorry about it, at all.

He is just going to sit here.

Staring.]

I did tell you, only you did not believe me.

Well, I should think news of dragons has made it out to the colonies; they have a great many of their own, after all. And we are not employed, at least not yet; we do not even receive a salary from the government. But that is likely to change, once we approach Parliament about it.

[He is being perfectly reasonable about this, James, why can't you see that.]

Of course, I have met people here who come from Englands and Frances without dragons, so I suppose your disbelief is understandable, if a little tedious.

[He snorts, properly irritated now, his ruff going straight back.]

I do not see how that makes any more sense to you than anything I have been saying. Of course I am not fictional, no more than you are: unless you were brought here from some terribly dry naval text, whose author neglected to mention dragons entirely.

Next you will be saying that I am supposed to kidnap young ladies, and terrorize villages, and eat people--only pray do not, as I have heard it all already, more times than I care to say, and it is all grown very old.

Yes, yes, you have said that already: and yet here I am, and I know of England, and the Royal Navy, and a great many other things, so you may as well accept it. As for your reaction, I cannot fault you it, to begin with, and I suppose I must apologize for startling you, but surely you must understand that it is equally upsetting to be told that one does not exist, to say nothing of all those other rude things.

[come on James the last person to freak out was Cosette and she didn't even flip her shit like you are ok]

[ok you hurt my feelings man]

Then what on earth do you presume I am, if not a dragon?

Perhaps you have.

[He's just gonna hang up like the 100% adult dragon he definitely is. And stalk off in high dudgeon. And read poetry for the rest of the day.]
