[VOICE | Backdated Pre-Event] Survey
[You wanna play it this say, Raph? Taking surveys to prove a point? Fine. Let's play.
It's not about who cares - well okay, to be fair, that's the MAIN reason they developed such fine-tuned stealth skills in the first place. But that's not the only reason a ninja should stay hidden. With enemies who would probably not announce themselves first, who would see him and his brothers on the Network and then proceed to silently hunt them down one by one...
The last time the team faced Shredder, he nearly killed them all, starting with Leonardo himself; the memory of seeing the intent in Oruku's eyes while facing down his blade remained a deeply chilling moment. But now Leo's team is down by one, they're not always together and they can't just stay underground here. If Shredder found one of them out in Keeliai, alone, with no way to contact the others for help...]
How many people have had their enemies show up.
[A question with the cadence of a statement. That's how you know he's serious, apparently.
If this survey turns up zilch? Leo will have to concede the point completely. But he doesn't really suppose that'll be the case. Let's find out.]

audio;
There's more than I was expecting, [he prevaricates, not answering directly.] I'm not really... social. At home.
And some people that know a different version of me? I'm trying not to think about that, either.
[audio | private; basic encryption]
Huh. Good to hear that we're not the only ones with doubles running around. Meeting another "you" is... well, it's odd. [Leo adores his older self, but that's because he's an egotistical little thing. And even he can't deny that it was strange as all get-out to get used to.]
So are you more, uh, "social" here than you were back home? [This guy looks human. Leo isn't sure why a guy who looks like that wouldn't socialize with other humans. But there really are all types here.]
[audio | private; 60% encryption]
I haven't met the other, uh, me, [and wow aren't there two meanings to that statement,] and I don't think I want to. I'm not sure what I'd say. But he's not here, anyway.
[He has the strong suspicion that they wouldn't really get along.]
It's not much of a comparison. [A small note of self-mocking humor in there.] Things are pretty different here. We need to work together, and that means... socializing.
[audio | private; 60% encryption]
I hope if one does show up he won't cause you any trouble. Mine's no problem, but one of my brother's doubles, he's - not someone I'd turn my back on. [Mostly because of what Raphael said about him, not from any interactions Leo has had, but his brother's call is good enough for him.]
And you're right, things are... really different here. I never thought I'd see so many people who don't care what we look like.
[He wants to ask how this human has coped with this "social" thing, how he's learned, but Leo's awkwardness in that arena isn't a vulnerability he'll admit to. The teenage mutant doesn't exactly have the vocabulary to ask the right questions anyway.]
Thanks for your input. It was really helpful, Mister...?
[Can he get a name, paranoia buddy?]
[audio | private; 60% encryption]
[Bruce doesn't know how he's coped with being social, to be fair. He's partly relieved that he has a chance to be honest here at all, and partly wary of it. It seems safe, which means that he can't trust it.
He has at least progressed to giving out his name without second guessing it, though.] Bruce Banner. I've been... surprised at the acceptance, too. Not that I look like anyone out of the ordinary.
[There's a very slight emphasis on look. And he's admittedly curious about a statement that leading-- what does he look like that someone would care about it-- which is probably audible, but Bruce doesn't press. He immensely values his privacy, and he won't pry into someone else's except in the least intrusive ways.]
Normally he would never, EVER do this on purpose. But Leo's using video in other locked conversations - ones encrypted far less securely than this one. He knows his family's cover is completely blown, so although he's still quite uncomfortable using unlocked video, he's slowly adjusting to letting people see him.
It's not as if anyone who cares to check couldn't find his prior accidental video reply to his brother, or the one he just made to Korra. They're out on the Network and there's nothing Leo can do about it. So here goes nothing.]
Well, you've got that advantage over us at least. The acceptance surprises me too.
I'm Leonardo. Nice to meet you, Mister Banner. [Accompanied by a deep nod, which Bruce might recognize as a socially appropriate Japanese bow. After all, Leo's technically Nisei - once you get past the whole mutant turtle thing and look at the culture of who actually raised them. Splinter brought them up in English with American culture, but every every once in a while they betray their heritage. For Leonardo, this specific set of manners is apparently triggered by making introductions to an adult for whom he's developed some respect.]
There's only one other me for now. [Thankfully. But the young turtle smiles as he thinks of Big Leo.] Meeting him was... interesting. He's older than I am [and a LOT more experienced] and we're definitely not from the same world. But, he's pretty cool. [That's a teenage brocrush, is what it is. Or minor hero worship. Could be a bit of both.]
Oh, I think I met one of your... brothers? [That was the word he'd used.] He was kind of, confrontational. [But he doesn't appear to take that personally either, in fact he's smiling slightly. It's hard to offend Bruce. Not even Raph managed it.
He gets a nod in greeting back, less formal but no less sincere. Bruce has no trouble respecting people (or turtles, apparently) younger than him.]
It's pretty strange to think about, [he admits.] I've been wondering how to deal with people that know the other me. [Then he shakes his head, dismissing it.] It must be nice that you get along with yours. Kind of like having backup.
[Of course he thinks of it in those terms. Friendship is still a little hazy for Bruce.]
Heh, that would be Raphael. He's one of mine. [Leo smiles as he immediately identifies his brother; Bruce doesn't even have to describe what he looks like. "Confrontational" is all the clue he needs.
Leo thrives on respect, and warms further to the human as the nod is returned. He's old enough to risk his life on the field - to make decisions upon which his brothers' lives depend - and he's more skilled in his art than most humans twice his age. He's also conscious of being the eldest and most responsible, a teenager impatiently pushing his way towards adulthood who strives to be more mature than his years warrant. It's important to him to be taken seriously.
And guess who also thinks in terms of backup instead of friends?]
I think I'm pretty safe trusting myself for backup. [Leo grins at his own joke.] But I don't really have your problem, not very many people know him. Er, us...
I mean, you had a good point earlier, about allies. [Leo rests his forearms on the edge of the console's desk, his body language becoming more casual as his comfort level rises.] Knowing who to trust... that's the tough part. [Leo's desperately trying to use his own best judgment in Keeliai, but back home he made a terrible error with just that very issue. It makes him gun-shy, although he is managing to make connections here and there.]
Allies... haven't come naturally to us very often.
[He gives Bruce a wordless glance before the transmission ends. Yes, it's the mutant turtle thing, it says. Because some people come from places where there are plenty of "mutants" (and pretty humans with powers really don't count in his opinion), not everyone understands his caution, and he's hoping Bruce will get it. Though to be fair, no one has given Leo attitude directly - he's just observed this phenomenon from stalking his brother's post.]
Bruce pretty much takes everything seriously, even when he's playing it off, so he has no difficulty whatsoever treating a teenage turtle about the same as he treats everyone else. He's been in Keeliai long enough to have gotten over any kneejerk what is even going on reaction.
Trust is also, definitely, a big issue for him.] I don't... have allies, either. At all, normally. Showing up and-- and suddenly having them was unbelievable at first. [Literally unbelievable. Bruce had taken a while to realize they were utterly serious.]
My mutation isn't visible right now, but it's very dangerous. Trusting someone is... a lot of trust, and you can't take it back. [But then he huffs a little, making fun of himself despite the seriousness of the topic.] I'm trying, anyway. I've heard you can't actually live in a box forever.
I gotta say, I've made more allies here in a month than we ever had back home. [Plus what you can call "friends", Leo.] Like, more than doubled. [Which isn't difficult, considering he could have counted them on one hand.]
... You're a mutant too? [Where Leo comes from, mutants don't look human. That's... why they're mutants, and Raph has said enough for both of them on that topic. Still, he likes Bruce; the human respects Leo, he's soft-spoken and not used to having allies even though he looks normal. Maybe whatever makes him call himself a mutant is the reason, in which case he does have something in common with Leo's family.
The turtle leans forward on his elbows, clearly becoming engaged by this tidbit of information.] You mean... you have some kind of power, right?
It's something. I guess it's a good thing. [He sounds like he isn't sure of that, but is trying, if largely in vain, to be optimistic.] At least we can be... honest. [That's the biggest difference for him.
Which means that he does get an honest response here.] I think the technical term is human mutate. I was born human and developed a genetic... anomaly, you could say, later on. But effectively I'm a mutant.
[There's a pause. Bruce seems completely unenthused about it as he says, reluctant,] Yes. I have power. [Notably not a power.] But I try not to use it.
Re: [video | private; 60% encryption]
Leo's good at jigsaw puzzles, and he's collected a lot of key pieces. Bruce is a shut-in; his mutation is dangerous; he tries not to use his power.
Unbidden, Leonardo thinks of Leatherhead. He was dangerous too, but not through choice. All Leo had seen initially was a danger to his brothers; it had taken Mikey's compassion and innocence to get through Leatherhead's PTSD and in the end they gained an ally, the only mutant outside of the family who didn't want to kill them.
However he's meeting Bruce now not as a monster, but as a calm, troubled man who doesn't want to hurt anyone. Maybe his isolation is even due to his care not to unleash his dangerous power. Leo respects that a lot, and there's a quiet regard in his eyes as he looks at the screen.]
.... Someone I know likes to say that knowing when not to use one's strength is the sign of a true warrior.
Re: [video | private; 60% encryption]
That he has no hope of seeing her again, even if he does get back to his world, makes his voice soft and introspective when he replies.] I'm sorry. [He's never been good at platitudes, can't try to tell someone that something is better than it is. So all he says is,] At least you have some of them.
[The second half of their conversation leaves Bruce feeling slightly uncomfortable, because he never feels that any respect for him is deserved. He made his own bed and all he's doing is laying in it. It's just desserts. But he tries to play it off with a slight laugh, raising a hand to rub along his jaw.] Well. I'm not much of a warrior. At all.
But I agree with the principle. And power is, is just a weapon, and if you can't control the weapon then you shouldn't use it. [That much, at least, he believes wholeheartedly.]
This is exempt from "dropping pre-vacation comm threads" b/c <3 dis CR omg
[Not much else can be said, but Bruce's sympathy is both unexpected and soothing. It's not false, just straightforward and true. Leo doesn't need anyone to lie for his comfort and again Banner's approach is reminiscent of his father's.
Coming on the heels of that similarity, Leo can't suppress the hint of a wry smile as Bruce professes not to be a warrior right before spouting wisdom akin to one of Splinter's lessons. The man might not be a born fighter perhaps, but he has wisdom. Sorry Bruce, there's no getting away from Leo's admiration if you keep pulling out lines about responsibility.]
A weapon you can't control is a danger to yourself and your allies. He taught us that, too. [But Leo can respect that Banner doesn't consider himself a warrior, even though the turtle himself considers it a high honor. With an unwanted, dangerous power, Bruce probably doesn't like to fight at all.] But if you're not a warrior, what are you? Er - [Leo gestures with his oversized hands to emphasize] - I mean, if that's not too personal a question.
despite being slow, I refuse to drop this, too!!
Bruce's entire life is about responsibility. He's oriented it around it and never hesitated to take it on himself-- in fact, arguably, one could say that he refuses to let it go. His overwhelming guilt comes from how responsible he feels, and he's always quick to shoulder it.]
Sounds like a smart man, [he says with a wry smile. Some things you just can't run from, and the fact that as long as he can't control the Hulk, he's a danger to everyone around him is one of them. It's inescapable.]
It's not personal. I'm a scientist. Uh... a nuclear physicist, some biochemistry. I've been doing some work since I got here. [This is a vast understatement, but Bruce is a master of those.]
aw yes. set up a power-drain event log soonish y/n/mfy?
A scientist? [Leo's eyes light up as he recognizes Bruce's fields of interest as similar to those preferred by his absent brother. It sounded like the sort of thing Donnie likes to work on, anyway.] It's a shame you just missed Donnie. He would've liked to have somebody to talk shop with.
yess maybe the other one we have going now could turn into action spam? :3 and wrap this one up?
I'll have to keep an eye out for him in case he returns. Seems like there's a lot of, of interest around here. [To put it mildly. Bruce doesn't know what to do with all this interest in his scientific expertise after almost a full decade of working alone, and foraging for scraps in the garbage to build centrifuges out of.]
Dude yes 8Db
Well [Leo quantifies and gestures], most of what we know. The skateboarding we picked up on our own.
I'll point him in your direction when he does. [Because one of two things will happen: either Leo will leave and go back home, or Donnie will get here sooner or later. There is no other option.
Also, the odds of Bruce picking up on Donnie's presence before Leo does are infinitesimal. He's smart enough to make a shout-out to his brothers on the network using audio, not video.]
I guess a lot of people are hoping that a scientist will be the one to figure a way out of here.
excellent!
[What is having fun or engaging in age appropriate activities... Bruce had certainly never done either at that age. Or had a positive father figure. He finds it impossible to relate, but it's nice to hear that not everyone has his experiences.]
I'll do my best, [is all he says about that hope.] But I think it'll be a collaborative effort. Science can't answer everything. [He's had that hammered home pretty firmly by now.]
