[Katniss is looking as cheerful as ever. Which is to say, not at all.]

Even if all these investigations find a way to fix the turtle, what's going to be done about the game? The kedan are coming to us for food, and what you can call a forest has basically been stripped clean. Unless we're just all living off vegetables until the next few breeding seasons have passed.

You can't live like that. Good things - okay things don't just fall into your lap. If you wait for the world to fix itself, you'll die waiting. [It should sound inspirational, but from Katniss it's almost hopeless.]

No you have to work for them, but sometimes they do just fall in your lap too. But I also have to believe that if I am incapable of doing something about the food shortage someone else here is just as capable of doing something about it. [Here have some hope Katniss cause Hazel is determined to be positive]

[That gets a faint frown out of Katniss' otherwise impassive face] Why do you think you're incapable? There's a...water garden, they take workers there in exchange for food. [Katniss doesn't even recognise it as hope. Optimism is for idiots and rich people, in her mind.

She snorts] That's not the word most people use.

My skills don't seem like they'd be useful exactly.[And as much as she wants to help solve the problem, she knows there are others more capable] Water garden? Ponds and lilypads? How does that grow food? [Thank you Katniss you've made her feel incredibly stupid and she's not sure she likes it

What are your skills? [She shakes her head, totally oblivious to how she's made Hazel feel] I didn't see any lilypads. I don't know how it works, exactly, but I know they need workers.

[That gets a tight smile] Not everyone. But you usually don't learn that about most people until it's too late.

Basic infantry training, cavalry, equestrian care, and cleaning mostly. Somehow I don't think my drawings would be useful in this situation. [And there's a handful of abilities thanks to daddy but she's leaving those out for now.] Oh, I didn't know that. I will look into that.

[she isn't really sure how to take that] Should I assume you fall in that category as well then?

[There's a faintly bewildered look on Katniss' face, because she isn't sure what some of those words are. Infantry, yes, but cavalry and equestrian are less familiar] Some skills can surprise you. My - someone I know decorates cakes. He managed to camouflage himself into a tree.

[A shrug] If I did, I'd tell you I didn't. I've stopped trying to figure it out at this point. Just be careful. [The similarities might only be superficial, but Katniss is not really in enough of a mentally stable place to be able to note that. She knows Hazel isn't Rue, but her life in this place is made up of memories. It makes her more open with this girl, although probably way more confusing]

[She sort of perks up a little because art and that is one awesome understanding of color and she wants to talk to them, pick their brain. Hazel seems not to notice the change of track mid-sentence.] That's amazing. I'm not of that skill level yet.

[She nods in understanding.] You don't have to worry.
