[Katniss is looking as cheerful as ever. Which is to say, not at all.]

Even if all these investigations find a way to fix the turtle, what's going to be done about the game? The kedan are coming to us for food, and what you can call a forest has basically been stripped clean. Unless we're just all living off vegetables until the next few breeding seasons have passed.

I suppose it is potentially possible that we may make landfall in an area where some of fauna still lives. There were predators where we first were - there must be some sort of prey, there. And if there was some there, more may be elsewhere.

[Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa.]

Sorry, but did you just say—breeding season?

It would be much worse to over-hunt the animals that have survived so far than to go as hungry as we have. There are a number of plants that appear to produce protein that can fill gaps in everyone's diet.

[ She only knows this because she's working in Banner's lab, sadly. ]

[Hazel looks intrigued by what it could mean] Living off vegetables wouldn't be all bad. [There's a question in there but she isn't going to voice it just yet, surely it can't be that bad despite what she was told upon arrival]

[Her eyes narrow. She remembers you, tiny child. Douche.] Predators will still eat each other if there's no prey.

[Staring] Most animals don't breed year-round. If they did, this wouldn't be such a problem.

[Katniss shrugs] I've only been taking older males where I can, but I'm not the only one hunting. [There's a pause here. Katniss, surprisingly enough, likes plants] What plants?

[There's a pause where Katniss' face goes totally white, and her hand twitches towards to the terminal like she's going to turn it off. But a second glance reminds her that there's more than one young girl with dark skin and curly hair in the world, and she moves her hand to pick at the burn scars on the other instead]

It's better than starving, but there are things in meat that people need. You can get them from plants, but it's harder.

What's wrong with living off vegetables? I don't eat meat, and it works well for me. [Vegetarians represent, yo.]

[Hazel is thoroughly confused by that reaction but she's perfectly happy to be moving on and avoid it entirely. She's never encountered someone reacting so strongly to see her face.]

But it can be done if needed, so that's something at least. Something will get figured out eventually.

It might be a good idea to start a conservation project... [ She honestly has no idea! Animals, not her specialty. ]

Oh, Dr. Banner and a few others have been working on growing vegetables away from the turtle's shell to quarantine them.

Yeah, I knew that but why are you bringing it up? Are you planning on breeding cats or something?

[Don't judge him, he's 200% a city boy and thinks hunting only exists in dystopian movies.]

[s t a r i n g] If there aren't any animals to kill, you can't eat them.

[Funny that you mention that :'D]

[A beat] I know how to trap as well as hunt. I could do it non-lethally.

[And she nods] I know about that. The plants are different here, though. I don't...know as much about them.

[She shakes her head] You can't just say 'something will get figured out eventually', because what if it doesn't? Starving isn't fun.

[Eyeing her for a moment] What's your name.

You don't eat meat? [This is a totally foreign concept to Katniss] Is hunting illegal where you are? Or farming?

[ She nods as well. Not a bad idea, if she does say so herself. ] I'll ask around if anyone has the facilities for something like that.

There are also several people catching fish far enough away from the turtle that they aren't infected. At least for a while we should be alright.

[STOOOOOOOP IT also Scott still doesn't get it and so he's just going to. Blink some more.]

...Isn't that what farms and butchers are for?

[Katniss has decided he must have been dropped on his head as a child] The kedan are coming to us for food.

Guess who was doing the farming and butchering.

[Another pause, because how do people?] Thanks.

[And then she makes a face, surprisingly enough] I'm so tired of fish. [She's attached to the side of one of those fishermen :'D]

[Okay she's a little taken aback by that point but still she has to believe that something good can still happen.] Then we'd be pretty on par for normal. But something will go right eventually. [Or mostly right but she's not bringing that up either]

Hazel. And you are?

[It's definitely a possibility. But he kinda sorta gets it now.]

Because of the rationing thing? Is it really that bad?

You can't live like that. Good things - okay things don't just fall into your lap. If you wait for the world to fix itself, you'll die waiting. [It should sound inspirational, but from Katniss it's almost hopeless.]

Like the nut. [a beat] Katniss.

If people don't find a way to fix the turtle, we're all going to starve to death. And even if they do, we'll still be living off fish and what vegetables we can grow. It's possible, but-- [She shrugs. Katniss has starved before, but she's pretty sure most other people in this place haven't]

[ Kara has to restrain a chuckle. She was thinking on a broader scale, not so personal. ]
