Even if all these investigations find a way to fix the turtle, what's going to be done about the game? The kedan are coming to us for food, and what you can call a forest has basically been stripped clean. Unless we're just all living off vegetables until the next few breeding seasons have passed.

I suppose it is potentially possible that we may make landfall in an area where some of fauna still lives. There were predators where we first were - there must be some sort of prey, there. And if there was some there, more may be elsewhere.

That only last a limited time, however. The predators we saw hunted in pairs, sometimes with a third animal used as bait. There were various pairs.

They must have had some food source. Plant life was also nearly nonexistent - it was a desert.

[Staring] Most animals don't breed year-round. If they did, this wouldn't be such a problem.

Yeah, I knew that but why are you bringing it up? Are you planning on breeding cats or something?

It would be much worse to over-hunt the animals that have survived so far than to go as hungry as we have. There are a number of plants that appear to produce protein that can fill gaps in everyone's diet.

[ She only knows this because she's working in Banner's lab, sadly. ]

[Katniss shrugs] I've only been taking older males where I can, but I'm not the only one hunting. [There's a pause here. Katniss, surprisingly enough, likes plants] What plants?

It might be a good idea to start a conservation project... [ She honestly has no idea! Animals, not her specialty. ]

Oh, Dr. Banner and a few others have been working on growing vegetables away from the turtle's shell to quarantine them.

[Hazel looks intrigued by what it could mean] Living off vegetables wouldn't be all bad. [There's a question in there but she isn't going to voice it just yet, surely it can't be that bad despite what she was told upon arrival]

[There's a pause where Katniss' face goes totally white, and her hand twitches towards to the terminal like she's going to turn it off. But a second glance reminds her that there's more than one young girl with dark skin and curly hair in the world, and she moves her hand to pick at the burn scars on the other instead]

It's better than starving, but there are things in meat that people need. You can get them from plants, but it's harder.

[Hazel is thoroughly confused by that reaction but she's perfectly happy to be moving on and avoid it entirely. She's never encountered someone reacting so strongly to see her face.]

But it can be done if needed, so that's something at least. Something will get figured out eventually.

You don't eat meat? [This is a totally foreign concept to Katniss] Is hunting illegal where you are? Or farming?

No. But a lot of people where I'm from choose to not eat meat willingly. It's a lifestyle choice. [What, why would hunting or farming be illegal?] As long as you can supplement what you're missing, you can live off of plants.

You shouldn't be asking. You've probably got as much experience with a natural ecosystem as anyone here, maybe more. What should we do?

[Her eyes widen slightly, and she flushes a little] I just hunt and gather plants. I can't make animals out of nothing. [She looks down at her hands, picking at the scars] I was talking with someone else about conversation...

No, but you know the forest. You know how it works, and how it sustains itself, and you know how not to disrupt that. If this were Twelve, what would you say?

[After all, Katniss has some authority over the woods surrounding District 12 -- and, though she might not realize it, she does have authority here.]

[Clark is a vegan, but he feels silly pointing that out. People who didn't choose to live off vegetables shouldn't be forced to. He pushes his glasses up before he speaks, making a face because everytime Kal has talked to Katniss it didn't go well... maybe Clark will be different?]

The Kedan didn't seem to have a lack of animals when we got here, and even after a while of us using some of their food. Maybe as soon as we get rid of the turtle's sickness the fauna will start to grow faster and better?

People can eat plants until we find a way to get the fauna better. It's not really optimism to hope for that, there isn't a lack of scientist on the turtle working on it.

A pescetarian diet for the city is probably a good way to go for a while.

[Ava makes a face at that. The idea of nothing but fish and rabbit chow for who knows how long doesn't appeal to her, but...] We can get our protein from fish and beans. It'll suck, but it's the smart move long term. Overhunting isn't gonna help anybody.
