There's a lot of things I've learned to just accept since I've been here. A magic bottle with the personification of death inside it is something that I can live with. What really confuses is me is how my dog ended up inside it and who put him there.

[At that moment there's a bark and Hawke's notch-eared mabari pushes his way into the feed, examining the strange thing that Hawke appears to be talking to. Hawke's hand falls to Notch's head as he pats the dog's head.]

Don't get me wrong, I love having him back, but answers are always nice.

[So would knowing that his dog isn't actually possessed by whatever corruption was in the bottle.]

At least the trip was fun enough. We should plan another one soon. Maybe this time without a dragon the size of a mountain, or the swamp. I'm thinking a chateau overlooking a lake.

Kirkwall has caught fire twice since I've lived there.

[And one of those times was kinda sorta his fault.]

If your Paris can stand that kind of excitement though I may give it a visit.

[There's a soft huff from Notch and Hawke rolls his eyes before looking to his dog.]

Oh you know what I mean.

Two years ago, there were riots and barricades in the streets. We very nearly overthrew the king. We DID cause one to run away.

[If he seems proud, well. The people had earned that.]

We tried again, which is what brought most of us from my home here, dying in that attempt, last summer. I think we might have used the sort of support and skill you bring along.

I'm not pouting.

[ He is visibly pouting. ]

I'm glad you found him, Hawke. Or that he found you.

Sounds like a party alright.

[Hawke's not sure if Enjolras really would have wanted him there. One of his dearest friends is a guardswoman. If she was involved in something like that, well...]

[No sense in being a downer.]

Please, next you'll be hitting me with the big doe eyes.

[Considering all the guardsmen Enjolras killed? Yeah, that's probably a conflict of interest right there.]

Well, when one sees a value and a skill in someone...they ought to point it out right then. I may have learned that the hard way but it IS still true.

As I said, I knew he'd show up eventually if only so someone would feed him.

[Notch barks happily at that idea and wags his tail.]

Oh, the bottle... it may bear similarities with the Death plane thing, but it ain't the same. You couldn't find things, when you went through the portals to Death. And it brought out your worst nightmares. The very worst. This was... bad. [ He winces. ] But it got better. It never gets any better, in Death. You just... find a way to escape it.

[ Bucky pauses, then shakes his head. ]

Sorry. Didn't mean to... go on and on at ya. Just wanna make sure you don't mix 'em up.

[ Continents, sometimes. Sometimes, sinking to the bottom of the ocean - with another city, or just corpses. Landfalls can be different, in this place. ]

Anyway. I guess, with all the dogs.

Keep in mind, some of them can be pretty damn big.

[ He might not have really spent time with either Naga or Mrs. O'Leary, but he's seen them around. They're kind of hard to miss, all in all. ]

[ Well, the pout is now going into a scowl... again. He doesn't seem overwhelmed by the implications there, but with a face this grumpy doe eyes sure would be a sight to see. ]

I'm not pouting.

He looks like he can put quite a lot of food away. What does he eat?

[His eyebrow arches upwards.]

Sounds like there's a story there.

[Hawke didn't expect the sudden lecture. The information is nice though. he smirks again and continues to steer the conversation away from something depressing.]

Big dogs I can deal with.

[His own stands just about at his waist and weighs as much as an adult man.]

No, now you're stuck halfway between a pout and scowl. A powl maybe? Or a scout?

[He mulls that over.]

Not sure if that last one works too well.

[Nope, not taking any of this seriously right now.]

Everything. Slap some gravy on a boot and he'll tear into it just as readily as he will some ham.

Maker if only more people I know thought like that.

Well, it's taken a bit of learning, I fear. Better that I picked it up but I would not contend I am so wise as to have known it all along.

That's big of you. I prefer to just act like I know what I'm doing until I actually know what's going on.

I think most people that went to Sinbrilee have a story there, pal.

[ Milder, though, and Bucky shrugs. ]

Sorry. If you get sucked there, you'll probably know the difference. Eventually.

[ Well, the dogs he means are definitely bigger. But he's sure they can be handled. And neither of them's gone on a blood rampage, so Bucky assumes their respective owners know what they're doing. ]

Maker you're a cheery fellow aren't you?

[Hawke seems unaffected by all of it though.]

I'm usually better'n this, actually.

[ He tries for a smile, that sort of... mostly doesn't work. ]

Been here for a while, is all.

That smile just looks painful. Try a drink or four, that might help loosen it up.

[Or follow the Hawke school of thought and repress repress repress.]

How long is 'a while'?

... did that for a while, too. It was ... interesting, during the rationing.

[ The half-smile is more real. ]

Nineteen months, give or take.

I heard about that. Glad I missed it.

[Nineteen months. Shit.]

I'm going to get sick of seafood.

There IS something for that approach. It tends to inspire confidence, at least. Sometimes one might even delude themselves that way.
