There's a lot of things I've learned to just accept since I've been here. A magic bottle with the personification of death inside it is something that I can live with. What really confuses is me is how my dog ended up inside it and who put him there.

[At that moment there's a bark and Hawke's notch-eared mabari pushes his way into the feed, examining the strange thing that Hawke appears to be talking to. Hawke's hand falls to Notch's head as he pats the dog's head.]

Don't get me wrong, I love having him back, but answers are always nice.

[So would knowing that his dog isn't actually possessed by whatever corruption was in the bottle.]

At least the trip was fun enough. We should plan another one soon. Maybe this time without a dragon the size of a mountain, or the swamp. I'm thinking a chateau overlooking a lake.

Answers to some of this are hard to come by, I fear. The oddest things have turned up in the oddest of places. I'd not heard of a pet doing so before. Iskierka had an elephant once, I do believe, but other than that...

I haven't got a clue what an elephant is but I'm going to assume that it's as weird as any of this.

[Hawke doesn't have a clue any more than Enjolras does.]

Something with good food and even better drink would be good.

Oh I LIKE the way you think. I feel as if I've not had proper coffee since I've been here. One adjusts, but even so.

What a happy coincidence, I like the way I think too. Frankly I'd like to have anything that's not fish at the moment. The taste has been in my mouth for days.

I grew up by the sea. I know that feeling entirely too well. They claim a sort of nostalgia can appear but I think I would be happy never to see fish again myself.

[Hawke is used to disapproving stares, though it's kind of adorable coming from a kid.]

It was definitely above average compared to a normal day of work. If I had to rate it I'd give it about a six or seven.

Don't be such a spoilsport. We got to see new sights, bring back some souvenirs, and this makes the first time I actually got to save a dragon instead of just kill it.

Fun ain't the word I'd use for it. But hey, my uh...future dog was found last time we went somewhere. Still got no idea how he got here either. Or why.

It sounds more and more like I'm in the minority here then.

[Man, you'd think kids these days would have a taste for adventure.]

So I take it the natives will be just as forthcoming with answers to this as they are with everything else.

[Maybe Hawke should have said 'native' instead, seeing how Evandu appears to be the only one actually from here.]

[Well he does. And usually he would reply with video, but...he's feeling rough. That kinda happens when you get pummelled by two adult, evil Kryptonians.]

Normally I'd agree, and it was cool to a point.

Like getting blood from a stone. I think they'd probably just smile and nod and walk away. Or y'know the usual 'I don't know'.

[Though Hawke was too focused on fighting the dragon and its beasties to get involved the with superheroes gone crazy.]

That would be more annoying if I wasn't so completely used to it by now.

If there's a single word to describe a mabari, it would be loyal. This dog has been with me longer than most people.

Dogs are better for that than people, I've noticed. Not that it's hard.

Not all people, but definitely most.

[His friends would stand with him through anything.]

Having a steady supply of ham helps too I think.

[Notch barks in agreement.]

That said, I think people find all sort of stuff in the places we make landfall. Maybe whatever... magic brings us here has side effects or something?

I think the pets found heavily lean into canines, though. No idea why.

[Hawke looks at the dog and grins.]

It's impossible to mistake him for anyone else that's true. Still, the land of the dead isn't exactly where I expected to find him.

[Jack mentioned to him about finding things during landfall. Hawke just assumed there would be some kind of island or something. Silly him for assuming.]

Because whatever is making the choice has good taste clearly.

[No he's not biased at all.]

Oh, the bottle... it may bear similarities with the Death plane thing, but it ain't the same. You couldn't find things, when you went through the portals to Death. And it brought out your worst nightmares. The very worst. This was... bad. [ He winces. ] But it got better. It never gets any better, in Death. You just... find a way to escape it.

[ Bucky pauses, then shakes his head. ]

Sorry. Didn't mean to... go on and on at ya. Just wanna make sure you don't mix 'em up.

[ Continents, sometimes. Sometimes, sinking to the bottom of the ocean - with another city, or just corpses. Landfalls can be different, in this place. ]

Anyway. I guess, with all the dogs.

Keep in mind, some of them can be pretty damn big.

[ He might not have really spent time with either Naga or Mrs. O'Leary, but he's seen them around. They're kind of hard to miss, all in all. ]

[Hawke didn't expect the sudden lecture. The information is nice though. he smirks again and continues to steer the conversation away from something depressing.]

Big dogs I can deal with.

Everything. Slap some gravy on a boot and he'll tear into it just as readily as he will some ham.
