[There are a lot of things Tess could talk about, if she was inclined. Bad things, mostly. The kinds of things that keep her awake at night, and plague her with nightmares when she does manage to sleep. Things from back home, things from the bottle, things that are really Ellie's to tell and not hers at all.

Death and loss and violence, and more death.

But fuck that. She's got something way more important to talk about. Like her hair.]

I found a gray hair today. [She twists her face into an approximation of disgust.] Can you believe that? So now I'm wondering if I should just dye it. [She tugs on a lock of her mousy brown hair - shinier and healthier than it was when she first showed up, that's for damn sure, but otherwise not particularly notable.]

But I don't remember the first thing about it. Anybody got tips for me? Or is it a shitty idea and I should forget it?

Probably.

Our apocalypse is only about eight years old, so occasionally we find make-up and hair dye on our scavenges.

Only eight, huh? It's like it's just starting school or somethin'.

So what do you recommend? Should I just dye out the gray and keep it my normal color? Or should I go nuts?

Eh. Go nuts. It's almost spring, right? Go colorful. That's what I'd do.

Hmm. [She's warming up to the idea, if only hypothetically.]

Blue? I've always liked blue.

Not like...full all over blue, but a bold streak or two would be neat.

[She wasn't seriously considering it, but that sudden mental image actually gives Tess pause.]

Shit. That might be a good idea.

It'd look awesome with your hair. It'd really stand out.

...Think so? [Huh. It really might. Damn. It's like this whole new world of fashion possibilities is opening up to her and she's just barely scratching the surface.

She quashes the little voice inside her wondering what Joel would think.]

Sounds like a plan. I've been buying some stuff, but it's kind of overwhelming. Back home I was lucky to find shampoo at all. Lotion was out of the question.

Oh, I know how that feels. Stuff is super scarce back home, so I kind of went nuts with food when I got here.

[Tess laughs. Yeah, that was her, too. Partly because food, and partly as a distraction from the nightmares and insomnia. Coping mechanisms? What are those?]

Yeah I was sick for about a week. It was really worth it. I think I've gained at least five pounds since being here.

Same. I got sick on these really spicy noodles, but it was so worth it. [She grins, laughing some, too.]

You know what I really want that I haven't been able to find here?

[A pause.] A really good burger. Gross as possible with every possible topping.

[Tess gives an audible groan at that.]

Fuck, that sounds perfect. We'll have to make it happen. I bet someone at the Brazen Turtle can make one.

Before or after dye shopping? This needs to happen soon.

After. Shopping works up an appetite, and once I eat I'll want to pass out.

Sounds wise. A food coma is a beautiful thing. [Amirite?]

Food comas are the only way to sleep. [She says it like a joke, though it's actually pretty true in her case. Eating a lot (and having a few drinks) is one of the easier ways to get to sleep without so many nightmares.]

[Food, sex, and alcohol. She has the first and the third, Raleigh left so she doesn't have the second.]

It certainly is one of my favorites.
