[Console, whatever. Sure she got the run down on the thing but Mai's pretty much been ignoring it for the past day. She hasn't even bothered to really look on the network itself even if she has no intention of making an entry to it.

Now she's bothering though, mainly because she just wants to ask:]

So explain this war business to me again. Or at least try to convince me why I should care. Because right now? I really can't find much inside to say I should.

Ah, in my case, actual shadows, a form of magic, I would think someone who understands it better would say. Though there are rumors of the political sort as well...

[Alright, she could buy that. If bending were possible, why not that.]

What's the deal with the politics then.

[solo_patria]

Something rather like that. We did not have that in my world so...I am at somewhat of a loss to put things better than that.

And ah, the politics. We have an Emperor just now, who oversees things. The last Empress here was responsible, far as I know, for beginning to bring us here. There is a code of laws somewhere that was written, you'll probably be given a copy or it can be sent to you. I believe I still have mine around.

Those of us who are Foreigners are not treated badly, really, just a little differently, but...things are not so markedly bad as they seem. Our enemy is believed to be approaching. We do not say his name because it draws him closer and we're all of us gearing up to fight, or help as we can do so.

Just saying his name draws him closer.

[There's a smidgen of disbelief there.]

If many do it, yes. It did happen several months ago.

What happened when he got closer then?

Ah well, the land itself begins to suffer of all things. There were some problems with resources in the past, actual signs of corruption...the presence of a killer. It seems possible they are connected.

And that happened just by him being close?

[solo_patria]

It did. There have been deaths as well. Being in his presence was...I nearly was brought to harming myself as well, and the people of the strongest moral codes I know were...

[Never mind he did not agree entirely with Javert's code; it was strong, and was a part of the man.]

Well, seeing them brought down to their knees in such a way that they were harmed so badly, mentally, emotionally, it certainly would harm the entire island if it happened to many people all at once. When at such a low point, if a greater attack came in...I am loath to think of it.

[Okay, now she actually looks surprised. She hadn't expected that sort of effect.]

That sounds pretty bad.

[It's an understatement but the outward breath that goes with it speaks volumes for how it impresses upon her.]

It rather is, yes.

So...that is why our war effort. Though I do wish we had been asked before it came to being brought here myself.

[At that the woman makes a sound that can only be termed weak amusement, something of a faint laugh.]

Yeah, that would have been my first choice too.

I mean, really. It IS entirely unrealistic somehow, even if they HAVE tried to make us comfortable.

Making a person comfortable after the fact is a little ridiculous.

Yes, yes it most certainly IS.

I'm glad we're in agreement on that then.

I am not sure that there is much to DO about it, but...it is still good to have support.

At least not at the moment anyhow.

True enough, yes. And if there IS somehow a way we find out, I will be sure to share.
