003 - early September - video

[Raine looks serious when she starts the video feed. This isn't unusual, per se, but she also looks like she might have been ill recently. Either that or she needs a lot more sleep than she's getting.]

If you were wounded in the recent altercation, even if you were healed at the time, please check in with one of the Foreigner healers at the hospital, just to be sure. Whatever toxin was on those weapons is a nasty piece of work; I thought I'd purged it from my system almost immediately, but still suffered some not insignificant illness. [If anyone's familiar with how quickly she can heal most things -- very -- this may be slightly concerning.] Given who exactly was most probably at the root of the attacks, this is not the time for stoicism, especially if you were exposed to a greater dose.

If you were hurt, and especially if you notice anything out of the ordinary, let someone know. If the hospital bothers you, or if you have privacy concerns, you can come to me directly. Even if it turns out to be nothing, it's far better to err on the side of caution when it comes to the enemy. There are few enough of us that it's foolish to take needless risks.

[Raine is far, far too familiar with how hiding potentially serious injury or illness goes. She's not even sure there will be any aftereffects, but this is something with which they can't afford to take any chances as far as she's concerned. And given that the majority of Foreigners she's met seem to have a similar sort of stubborn independence... well, she's not even sure she'll get a response, but it's worth trying.]

I was hurt, and Katara's been taking care of it. But some weird things are happening to me.

[Zuko sounds a bit unsettled, maybe even a little scared. He has no idea what's happened to him or what to do about it. These feelings... and the nightmares, it's really bothering him.]

[Raine knows him more as 'Iroh's nephew' than anything else, but she does at least recognize him, and is now concerned.]

What sorts of weird things?

[She was so hoping she might have been wrong about lasting effects.]

I don't think I know Katara. A healer, I take it?

Yeah. She's a waterbender.

[He sounds a little annoyed. Though not for any real explainable reason.]

The pain won't go away. And I'm having nightmares... and when I wake up, the pain is worse for awhile.

[His voice grows increasingly agitated as he continues to speak.]

And I'm angry all the time. Sometimes I even want to hurt people.

[Waterbender, all right, it's reasonable enough to assume this Katara knows what she's doing as far as healing goes. But the rest of what Zuko says, not to mention that rising agitation... it's distinctly troubling, and Raine has to put in some effort to keep up her usual level of calm. She takes a deep breath, and starts to address things one step at a time.]

Nightmares of what, if you don't mind? [It has probably equal chances of being purely personal or important to the bigger picture.]

And can you recognize an outside influence, or does that anger feel like any other mood would?

I found some spirit water I can give to the hospital for their use. It has mystical healing properties. All you have to do is pour it over the wound or find a way to soak the wound in it. It'll last longer if you can soak the wound. But you can't mix it with other water and there's not a lot of it.

['Spirit' is usually a good word to relate to magical power, however, and the offer is a kind one.] Enough of the healers who work there use water to heal that it'll likely be useful. Thank you.

Mystical healing properties is the best I have. That's how it was explained to me. I just know that it's very powerful and that it works. It's a special kind of water found in my world.

Can you at least say for sure whether its effects are purely physical or not? 'Spirit' implies a bit more than that, unless it's referring to the water's source?

[She gives the message half a smile, and shows a notebook to the console. The only readable part is blocky lettering that says Malnature Toxicosis? The rest, while it has the shape of a list, is in a looping, curlicued sort of script.] I'll copy it out in the common language when it's a little more complete. That's presuming you'd like a physical copy.

[She could always type and send it via the consoles, but she prefers to have something in her hands.]

I was wounded myself, and the spell I've learned did not help me very much. Are you suggesting I should even move to get this looked at?

[His tone is a little sharp, and then he's wincing.]

I apologize. That was uncalled for. Have many been experiencing this, then?

It was, yes. [She doesn't sound particularly offended, though, having already grasped that this thing makes people more irritable.] I don't know about 'many' yet, but you're certainly not alone in this.

That said, if you're still injured, I do suggest either that you come to the hospital, or I can come to you. [She pauses, tips her head a little to one side, considering.] I'd like to take a look in any case, if I may.

[That is a relief. Enjolras, when he's injured, is somewhat prone to annoying his friends, mostly because he usually staggers ahead with whatever needs to be done, but the infection in his shoulder is enough of a concern, and pain, that he had sent a kedan messenger to let the hospital know they were short an assistant for a few days.

The idea of moving seems like its own special torture, but well. It DOES need to be done, and so he is nodding.]

I...will see what I can do. I need to determine when I might go back to work as it is.

Don't push yourself too hard. [Her expression warms a little. She can appreciate dedication.] It's not much trouble to come find you.

Are you noticing anything out of the ordinary aside from the wound itself, and what I'm presuming is uncharacteristic agitation? [Even if she's seen him around the hospital, she hasn't spoken to him enough to tell for sure, but it does fit the situation.]

[His tone isn't stern, isn't admonishing, isn't much of anything but impassive, but there's still an element of concern there.]

[She's not quite looking into the console head-on, rather a little to one side. Were they in the same room it might best be likened to not wanting to directly meet his eyes.] I'm as well as I'm going to be, and there's work to be done.

[And she really is fine. Tired, stressed, but no longer sick. She just hates having been sick in the first place.]

I was stabbed but minimized exposure to the taint that was on the blades
I healed myself so everything is just tender for the time being.
No strange side-effects from the taint.

I'm still new to using healing skills but if you need extra help at the hospital for the next few days I can heal minor injuries and detect anything out of the ordinary in a human's biology non-invasively.
So infection, internal bleeding, broken bones, bruised organs, diminished nerve impulses etc.

[She sticks with video despite the format mismatch; it's just a personal preference. She'd remember him better if she had a face to go on, but for now she just takes the message as what it is.]

It's good to hear you're suffering no ill effects.

It's not desperate at the moment, but we could use the extra hands if you're willing. [And oh, that's a useful ability. Her diagnostic skills are lacking, and she'd want his help for that if nothing else.]

Later that day, Raine made her way to the hospital, a notebook under her arm and her staff in hand as ever. She paused in the lobby rather than going any further to an exam room yet, reasoning that this would be the best place for Enjolras and Gazelle to find her. With a little bit of luck, the timing of their arrivals would coincide well enough, and time alone with either one wouldn't be a problem in any case if that should happen.

Akito wastes no time heading to the hospital once he receives Raine's message. It doesn't take him long to get there, as there are few obstacles blocking his way via rooftop.

Raine is easily recognizable once he arrives, and he hurries over to her. He sees no Taint on her, which is a relief. Raine is important to the hospital, and having her compromised would be more than just an inconvenience.

"Raine-san, hi. It's good to see you again."

On his way through to the hospital, Enjolras had gotten a message, of sorts, via Taraja, who he had been trying to keep himself locked away from while he was so angry. It'd taken about fifteen minutes to try to explain that he didn't want his mood to hurt her, and that he was sure he would be all right, and that, yes, after he talked to the healers trying to help, that he would be sure to let her know what was going on, and that yes, they certainly could go to the turtle's head when he was feeling better.

At any rate, it's made him a bit later than he expected, though still in the vein of being fashionably so, and he's annoyed, but does not want to be annoyed while he moves over to greet Raine.

"I do apologize if you have been waiting long. The mental shields I've tried to put up are not so great when compared to a worried young turtle's ability to penetrate them. I would hate for any of this energy to leak into Taraja."
