[She sounds more like she’s lecturing a classroom than delivering potentially shattering news.]

If you have previously thought none of this affects you, or if you simply missed the information, at the end of last month our enemy asked us to guess where it really is. Some of you will have already formed your own conclusions about this; I know I’ve certainly talked to some who have.

[Deep breath.]

There’s sufficient data with independent verification that I’m now sure, and everyone needs to be aware of this, sooner rather than later.

Our enemy has possessed Asti himself.

[A pause, considering. Well, the words are out now, no taking them back.]

That’s all. If you wish me to justify myself, either my conclusions or my lack of caution, I’ll do so, but more pressing right now is coming together to find a way forward, now that everyone is apprised of how severe the situation is.

[She lifts her chin a little then, and adds, not to any Foreigner but to the being she is pretty sure is watching,] Well? Do you care to confirm or deny?

No, that's what you're assuming she's saying because you're too angry to think straight. She's saying that we need to do something about this war we're having, and we need to do it soon or there won't be any kedan left to take charge of their own society. She's not wrong. You're not wrong either, but you're not being helpful when all you do to prove your point is sling around insults.

Maturity is also recognising that being told you're being an idiot isn't the same thing as someone being malicious. I'm your teacher. It's my job to tell you when you're being foolish and help you see how to fix it. It's not my job to give you a pat on the back and tell you everything will be alright and that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong.

You once told me I'd have to tell you when you're being disrespectful. You are being disrespectful, Hayley. You don't have to like it, but if you can't realise that changing your behaviour is sometimes necessary, however galling, then you're not going to get very far. You are an intelligent young woman, and you can be a driven one when you put your mind to it. But you are, right now, demeaning yourself.
