(Alayne looks conflicted. She scrunches her skirt in her hands, her fingers moving restlessly.)

I pray everyone is safe. I wish I were...braver. But if there is a need for someone to watch over those injured, I am volunteering.

(She is still the sort to run away from danger rather than confront it.)

Did anyone determine the cause for the destruction? Are we...

( ...going to war? No, once she says those words, bad luck will follow her like an unshakeable shadow.)

I know how to clean wounds and see that they heal properly.

Have you looked into working at the Healer's Guild? The Foreigners are running it.

(She tries her best not to look shocked...or disturbed. But her experience with green not-human people is very limited.)

I suppose I could? Are they low on staff?

[ Meanwhile, Stork mistakenly thinks that the surprise is due to the suggestion, not his appearance. ]

Not that I know of, but you wouldn't want to have that place get low on staff, right?

Certainly not. (The reply comes instantly and she nods, strengthening her resolve.) I will study the available books and lend my aid.

[ Stork looks pleased by his agreement. ]

[ He may have been lurking. In a not-creepy way. Probably. It's just a matter of avoiding germs, mostly. ]

I have been living there for some months now. (Which isn't something she ever saw herself doing. But it has been a positive experience for her.) I'm Alayne. It's nice to meet you, Stork.

This place is strange, isn't it? I have never had so much free time.

I know. Getting to work on my projects on my own schedule, I haven't had that in two years.

What is your...squad...like? (A strange word for her.) Do you have the proper tools to work on your projects?

Well, there's six of us. Aerrow is our Sky Knight, he's the leader. I'm the pilot. Piper is our crystal specialist and navigator, Finn is our sharpshooter, Junko handles heavy ballistics, and Radarr is... Radarr.

I had a few that came with me, others I made while I've been here.

You have interesting names for your people. (Expected but curious nonetheless.) One of them is...a sharpshooter? Does that mean you are like...knights?

[ Not that it really matters, but he's curious too. ]

Right. Finn uses an energy crossbow, with crystal-tipped arrows. He's actually an amazing marksman [ and Stork sounds like he's admitting this under duress ] ... when he's not showing off.

Well, knight -- Sky Knight -- is a specific title in Atmos. Aerrow took the Trial and passed, so he's officially recognized by the Sky Council on Terra Atmosia. Each squad only has one active Sky Knight at a time.

[ Stork actually sounds pleased to be explaining all this, and not put off at all by the questions. ]

...both? (They are both strange.) Are crystal-tipped arrows better than iron?

(Sky Knight. She's not sure about the term.)

Why does a Knight fight with non-Knights? (It occurs to her that she is asking a lot of questions. Smiling faintly, she inclines her head.) Your world seems...more advanced...than mine.

Crystal tips give you a range of effects when they hit. For example, if you put an Icer crystal chip in there, it'll freeze the target.

Because not everyone can be a Knight, and it'd be hard to beat the Cyclonians by yourself? Other parts of the squad are important too.

Does it? Most people think Atmos isn't advanced compared to theirs. I guess it must be somewhere in the middle.

Me and Gene are teleporting there right now to check it out. Sounds like flooding. Don't know much else about the situation, but there will probably be injuries. We'll need someone to get the Healer's Guild set up to receive wounded. Can you cover that? And if you can find her, ask Zanru how many people were assigned to that station. We need to know how many we're looking for.

Why did I forget that the two of you could teleport?

I will do what I can and speak to Zanru for you. (She is grateful to do something.) I hope they have all survived. Flooding can be...

I have never dealt with it before.

Me neither. [Alien invasions, supervillains, murderous nanobots and AIs, bombs, volcanoes, and evil creatures from other dimensions, sure. But flooding's new.]

It's just a radio outpost, so I don't think there would have been many people there. There's a good chance they're all okay. [A claim that he is basing on absolutely nothing, but it never hurts to be positive.]

I don't think we're sinking or anything. Or at least nothing too significantly. The water's back to where it ought to be.

Too be honest, I'm not entirely sure why there was a freak flood at all. Well, there was a report of something like a tremor. Or an earthquake. But... how can we have an earthquake? We're on a turtle.

I am asking myself the same questions, but if there is flooding...

Perhaps the turtle is partially submerged?

Maybe it was for a brief bit? Hard to say though since things mostly resolved themselves by the time I got there. The kedan surprisingly aren't being too vocal about the details other than it was the Chilelwhatever people who saved them.

Is there a way to contact the rescuers? They might be more...vocal. (It's startling not to have a concrete answer.) I am relieved it is resolved regardless.

Considering that they've already split the scene and went back to whatever rock they live under, likely not.

[He screws up his lips in a disapproving frown.]

You'd think if we're after the same thing, they'd be a little more... y'know, visible. And otherwise helpful.

Why would they hide? They should be proud of their efforts.

Unless they were forced into hiding? Could someone be threatening them?

Beats me. Probably some history thing or something. I didn't bother to ask about it.

[Because it's probably boring stuff. And irrelevant. Really, those are the same thing.]

It might serve us well to know their history. (Even if it's boring.) In my experience, people either like acknowledgement for their good deeds or they shun it because of some deep-seated reason.

Yeah, but on the other hand, if they want to be acknowledged for their good deeds, they can come out and actually be thanked for it. Or go out there doing more good deeds.

I mean, have most of the kedan taken an active interest in us and found out that we're generally not horrible people? Nope. But they're at least happier that we've come to help them out a little bit.
