[Hello again Keeliai, your resident beautiful janitor evil overlord Hotel manager here. He's looking a little better rested than the last few times he's been on the network, rather nonchalant today, resting his chin on his hand.]

There's cake in the common room. Come have a piece.

((ooc: Translation: party in the Hotel! Everyone is invited. Come do fun things and be happy, because seriously some people need it. Party thread is here.))

[ Stork is on the Hotel console, and looking a little more grey than green at the moment. Long fingers are trembling slightly as he pulls them back, having juts turned on the video feed. ]

Did... did anyone else just see that...?

((OOC: The vision has been telepathically sent out to all Foreigners and major named NPCs. Infomation and opt-out are in the OOC post!

Action at the Hotel is good too!))

I think it's going to rain, tomorrow. And not the comfortable kind of rain. It's still too bloody warm around.

[When the screen comes on there is a face just a little too close to the camera; it’s got freckles and red hair. The figure scoots back a bit, and a young woman in her late teens appears, grinning nervously.]

Uh, hiiii. I’m Pepper. Pepper Potts. I come from a city called New York which some of you have probably heard of and if you haven’t you should because its awesome. Or, it was awesome before a bunch of aliens came and tried to destroy the planet, which they might still do, I got here before we blew up the ship when I got teleported, so it might not be so awesome when you go visit. [She pauses, catching herself.] Er. If, I guess. Sorry, I talk a lot when I’m nervous, apparently, that’s what everyone always tells me. Actually they say I talk too much all the time, not just when I'm nervous. Especially Tony and Rhodey and Gene. Oh! Yeah, I'm from the same place as Tony and Gene. Well, not exactly, we came here from different places, or something, which I don't really understand yet.

[She takes a deep breath and tries to slow down the torrent of words.] Anyway. I hear there’s some big bad running around and since I’m kind of used to fighting supervillains I’m totally there if you need someone to help with butt-kicking. Probably.

[Pepper sags a little bit.]

I could use some help figuring out what to do here. I’m supposed to get a job and all I ever wanted to be is a SHIELD agent. I could help...organize...things? Unless someone needs a personal shopper, in which case I am so there.

[It had been a month since her mugging, and subsequent retrieved of her (tainted) soul gem.  More than a month, really.  In that time, others had come forward.  None of them dealing with the same symptoms she was.  Still dealing with, actually.]

[But that wasn't why she was on the Network.  Not today.]

Okay, so, a couple years back I tried a...let's go with accidental magic experiment.  [Translation: she screwed up a spell and magically blew up the city for about a week or so.]  One of the side effects was that I ended up aging a few years.  Eighteen, Nineteen...I never did figure out how much older I'd gotten.

Then I looked in the mirror this morning, and...I think I figured it out.

[The smile on her face was half-hearted at best.  A mixture of pride and sadness.  Nostalgia.]

Great way to start your fourth Turtle birthday, huh?  With this crazy realization that you've been here so long, nature's started catching up to magic.

[Oh good, he's getting stage fright from a video message. But this is important, kinda, so he clears his throat and pushes through it, though it's obvious he's a little nervous. Maybe less nervous, as the message goes on and he gets more comfortable.]

So...I guess things have been pretty crazy lately, huh? [There's an awkward pause. He - was going to say something about that, but now he can't remember and he's not sure he had anything helpful to say anyway.] ...Yeah. Anyway. So, uh, I had a question for the mechanics and the engineers and whoever else tinkers with the local tech around here. At least, what tech there is in this city.

[Not without maybe a tiny little hint of ugh in there, but he's resigned to it, at this point.]

Would it help if there was someplace central you could go to get the parts and tools you need to work with, instead of hunting all over the city markets for them? Like, a one-stop shop for all your tech needs. Something like that.

[He shrugs.]

Lemme know what you think.

Also, if anybody needs any repairs done on small appliances or machinery, you should totally send me a message. I only charge a couple juulans an hour, with house calls included for free.

[Big grin, finger pistols. Sell it, Hiro.]

(Alayne looks conflicted. She scrunches her skirt in her hands, her fingers moving restlessly.)

I pray everyone is safe. I wish I were...braver. But if there is a need for someone to watch over those injured, I am volunteering.

(She is still the sort to run away from danger rather than confront it.)

Did anyone determine the cause for the destruction? Are we...

( ...going to war? No, once she says those words, bad luck will follow her like an unshakeable shadow.)

I know how to clean wounds and see that they heal properly.

So when the information on this place said that people you know could appear... and then disappear... without warning? There could have been a subsection about it only lasting two weeks.

[ A silence, just a shade longer than a subject change would have necessitated. ]

What kinds of metals are commonly used in your worlds? I'm having some trouble finding comparable materials.

[ Stork is using the Hotel's console for this broadcast, moving back a little from the screen so that the table in front of him is visible as well. On it are two blue crystals of a similar shade, each about the size of a golf ball. For anyone to whom he's talked about the crystals of his homeworld before, these will definitely match that description. It seems that he's gotten hold of some in Keeliai, and didn't waste any time in working with them. ]

There's a good reason we use crystals as the main power source in Atmos. These ones here are called "Floaters"-- I'm sure you can guess what they're going to do.

[ He produces a third crystal into view, this one a silvery pale colour and a little larger than the others, shaped like an elongated rhombus. He doesn't name this one, but as he holds it over the two Floaters, they begin to vibrate on the table. After a moment, they rise into the air, levitating. Stork touches one of the Floaters with one end of the silver crystal, and the other Floater with the opposite end, and the two begin to rotate one another on a horizontal plane. They spin faster, but keep to the same orbit.

All seems to be going well, except the blue Floaters keep increasing in speed. The orbit develops a bit of a wobble, and the merb's pleased expression melts into one that is clearly uh-oh. A second later, one of the Floaters goes supersonic and zooms out of the rotation, narrowly missing Stork by inches -- who yelps a "Yleeep!" and ducks off screen -- and embedding itself in the opposite wall of the lobby -- Sorry, Anton. The other Floater simply falls to the table and bounces away, and a moment later, long ears followed by a sheepish green face, peer up from the table's edge.

Ahem. Still working on getting the harmonization calibrator up to spec. I should have all the bugs worked out soon.

[Midii very rarely used the Handset. In fact, she very rarely spoke out in public at all; her preference for conversation was usually face-to-face.]

[But a certain conversation the previous month was still weighing heavily in her mind, and with all this construction going on around the palace--she had seen it in passing several times in the last few weeks while running her delivery jobs--curiosity got the better of her. A single question she eventually couldn't help asking:]

What does everyone think of the Midnight Hotel?

[Overgeneralized for a reason. There were so many different opinions to take into account, and she wanted to hear them all.]

I know that there's work being done on the--[But she was cut off by a sudden bout of coughing. Dry, mainly, and lasting only a few seconds, though the subsequent clearing of her throat and audible sigh indicated this wasn't the first time she'd coughed like that today.]--sorry. Like I was saying...um...

[What was I saying again?]

...right. The Palace.

I wanted to know what made it so special, compared to the Hotel.

I may have discovered a clue as to the purpose of the symbols I believe many of you are investigating.

For the sake of context: The Midnight Hotel ran out of coffee-beans some time ago. At the beginning of the month, I found some coffee-beans unexpectedly in the Hotel's pantry. For the sake of caution I did not bring them to the attention of the patrons, particularly since the beans have been disappearing overnight and reappearing again by evening over the course of the last week. They seem to be regular beans, in spite of their vanishing abilities.

This morning, the coffee-beans from yesterday are still there. It's the first time they have remained in existence overnight.

The message I received in my inbox at the beginning of the month was accompanied by an orange hexagon.

[Pause.]

Incidentally, we now have a self-filling jar of coffee-beans available for public use in the Hotel's kitchen.

[Xion finds it easier to go with voice for this; it affords her a certain sense of anonymity, but doesn't give her the same opportunity to censor and second-guess herself that text has proven to allow, when she's tried to use it thus far. It's still not easy to talk about. Maybe that's why she does this when she does. Part of it is because these thoughts are keeping her up of course, whirling around her head until sleep seems impossible. On the other, it means maybe people are less likely to see this. Maybe.]

Is... there anybody you really, really miss?

[There's a moment, and then she laughs a little to herself, though there's no humor in it.]

I guess... that's almost a silly question, huh?

[Deep breath, in and out. Anybody can probably hear the sigh whuffling across the feed.]

Back home, I had my friends. But then I... left. A lot of stuff had happened, and I just needed to think for a while. But... I hadn't meant to stay away, not forever. I was going to go back... but now I don't know if I'll ever see them again. That's what everybody keeps saying, right? That there's no way to go home.

How do we know if they're okay? People we've... left behind? And... Even if they are okay, even if... if they don't notice we're gone...

[She trails off, not quite sure how to articulate her thoughts on the matter. Whatever else though, it's something uncomfortable she doesn't really care to contemplate. And yet it's hard not to.]

I guess I'm just... [worried] Never mind.

[ The feed opens with Stork tapping one long green finger on the screen, looking a bit sheepish. He's not unfamiliar with the level of technology here, just the specifics. In the background, a public cafe and several irate looking kedan glaring at the Merb's back. In the foreground, some telltale purple bio-mechanical goop. ]

So... note to self: don't try dismantling these things, they melt like a bad batch of Globs. I, uh, I'm probably going to have to pay for that other one, aren't I? I've probably contracted Raztorian poisoning already. Only a matter of time before I start going blind in one eye...

Can someone tell me what passes for a crystal depot around? Someone mentioned the Earth Sector, but when I showed them the Cinder crystal I had on me, they said they'd never seen anything like it.

[ He turns his head to look over his shoulder, not at the kedan but upward, to the sky; the metal earrings move as he flicks one long ear, listening for something while looking uneasy. ]

Is the sky always this quiet here? I don't like not being able to hear even a single airship. If there's going to be a cataclysmic blast cloud coming to wipe us all out, I'd like some time to get a fresh copy of my will prepared.
