[Console: Video] Soul Gem Kedan

[The man appearing on the screen is one Yuri Lowell, but anyone who knows him might notice that there's something different about him. It's subtle, but it's there. A certain look in his eyes, as if he'd been through some really tough battles. Even his voice sounds a little worn.]

Hey guys, remember those Kedan with the soul gems that disappeared and we dreamed about being in some of our worlds?

Well, they actually are there. Milyn sent me home for awhile and I saw the one I dreamed about and talked to him. At the time I had no idea who he was and didn't remember until I came back. But he definitely knew who I was.

[It's interesting to see Yuri looking so worn, but she was more concerned about his news. She arched a brow, lips tightening as she listened.]

Did he say anything of note? How he got there? Who sent him? Why?

No, nothing like that. I don't think he knew either.

He tried to convince me that I'd missed several months of my life, and that I had been somewhere else.

Problem is, I didn't really give him much chance to talk. He's struggling with our language and I just thought he was some crazy old man.

He did want me to make sure to take care of his family if I ever got back. But I don't even know his name.

[A very long pause and then, quietly, almost as if to herself...]

Someone is trying to figure out to to send us home.

[She shakes her head]

Do you remember what he looks like?

[Yuri had thought about that too.]

Yeah, he's an older guy with his hair going grey. And his soul gem is purple like mine.

If you can describe him, I might be able to make a sketch. Someone must know who he is.

Sure. Do you want it now?

[Just in case she needs to get her drawing supplies or something first.]

Hold on.

[She moves out of view and rustling and a few clumps can be heard as she moves things around. Then she scoots back into view, pencil held gently between her lips as she settles herself and flips to a new page in Meira's sketchbook. Then she takes the pencil in her hand and looks back up]

Ok.

[Once she's settled back down and let's him know she's ready, Yuri launched into a description of the Kedan man. Giving her all the details he can remember. Because he would know more than his mun actually does.]

[She sketches furiously, not pausing once to ask Yuri to slow down. After he falls silent, she continues to sketch for several more minutes. Then she stops, tips her head as she looks at it and then tucks the pencil behind her ear and holds up the sketch. It isn't as steady as when Meira was in the forefront, but the details he gave were all present and someone should be able to recognize the man from the sketch.]

[Yuri takes a moment to look it over and then nods. A little bit of a smile finally coming to his face.]

Yeah, that's pretty good.

[She flips it around to look at it again, shrugs and then carefully rips the page out of the book.]

I'll make a few more copies and have one of the gang members deliver them to your residence.

[She taps her lips with a finger in thought and then looks back at him.]

You said his soul gem was purple like yours?

[Her eyes light up]

Perhaps they haven't actually created soul gems, but they have managed to clone them.

[Having a drawing of the man would definitely make things easier in tracking down someone who knows him. He then blinks once at her sudden epiphany.]

Yeah, maybe, or it could just be a coincidence.

I don't believe in these kinds of coincidences.

I hear you, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. There was more than one Kedan with a soul gem, remember?

[But if they all had similar colored soul gems compared to the person whose world they were sent to... that would be something.]

I remember.

[She sighs and shakes her head.]

Perhaps his family will be able to tell you more.

I'll let you know if I find out anything.

I'd appreciate that.

[In the meantime, she'd be doing some hunting of her own.]

[As a matter of fact, Midii did remember those dreams. The image from long ago of her own war-torn world, and a child who could shapeshift wandering the area. It would have been impossible to forget for the fact alone that she hadn't seen that place since she was eleven years old.]

Milyn has the power to send people home?

Home come nobody ever said anything before?

Yes and no. You're not physically sent back. It's through the Dreaming. Basically you get to lay there for a couple days and dream about what happens at home. But when I woke up, my body wasn't the same as when I started. It's pretty weird.

But...if you're only in Dreaming, how can you be certain what you saw was real?

[She thought back to the year's time they all spent in Dreaming. The happy life Midii was able to have, reunited with family members she was nearly positive would no longer be alive, if that much time had passed.]

And what do you mean, your body wasn't the same? What changed?

I guess I can't. Not anymore than know this place is real, right?

[Yuri thinks it's real anyway. He wants to believe it's real.]

I came back still banged up from that last fight.

[It was definitely more than just a dream.]

[That was...the kind of proof that was difficult to argue with.]

I've been here too long for this place not to be real.

But...to earn injuries while dreaming...it's like you actually went to the world of Dreaming, which then somehow became your home world while you were there.

If you're trying to figure out how it works, you're looking at the wrong guy. Maybe you should ask Milyn.

[Cause really, he wasn't going to be able to explain it.]

All I know is that it felt pretty real to me.

I know it did. I do believe you.

[He had no reason to lie about something like that.]

I'm just...trying to figure out what this could mean.

[It's good to have confirmation that there are soul-gemmed kedan in some of their worlds. But a different fact has drawn Skulduggery's attention.]

I thought Milyn's methods let you see the future of your world, not to become an active participant. Are you saying she physically sent you home?

Not exactly. I fell asleep at her place, and picked things up where I left off. Spent several months at home then woke up in the same place after only a couple days. The weird thing is I was still banged up from that last fight.

[He can't physically have gone home, then. And yet, every single other piece of evidence points to exactly that - remaining injured, meeting that kedan. Skulduggery has to wonder just how powerful the Dreaming is.]

Did anyone other than Milyn see you while you were sleeping?

Sure, I was watching the entire time I was dreaming.

[Translation: Probably not.]

[Skulduggery figured as much. Still, it's frustrating not to have another lead.]

What did the kedan in your world tell you?

He spent a lot of time trying to convince me that I'd been somewhere else, and since I didn't remember any of it, I didn't believe him. Just thought he was some crazy old man. He did ask me to look after his family if I ever came back though.

Whoa. Seriously? That's... Well, I guess it's not surprising, but it's good to know. He didn't know anything about how he got there, did he?

If he did he didn't say, but I really doubt it.

Did he say how long he'd been there? I wonder how their timestreams are matching up with ours...

Months. Definitely long enough to pick up some of our language.

[Tony looks thoughtful.]

No time passes for us in our worlds as long as we're here. And if we go home temporarily, how long we spend there doesn't seem to affect how long we're gone from here. It's pretty random. But it sounds like the kedan are spending as much time in our world as they're gone from this one. The timestreams are matched up for them. I wonder if that means anything.

[And he wonders if that's true for every kedan who's gone missing. That would definitely be an interesting pattern, if so. He's not sure what it might mean, but it's worth noting.]

I dunno, but it sure is weird. I spent months back at home too but it had only been two days here. But when I woke up it was like I had physically spent that time there. I've got the marks to prove it.

[He really doesn't understand this stuff at all. He only knows what he experienced.]

Yeah, weird is the word for it. [Tony sighs.] I just hope we can figure out how to get the kedan back before someone figures out how to sends all of us home.

[It would be awful if the soul-jemmed kedan ended up trapped permanently in all the foreigners' various universes.]

Well I'm looking for that guy's family. Who knows, maybe I'll stumble across some clues.

[That would be pretty convenient if he did.]

His family. Good idea.

[Tony realizes with a stab of guilt that he'd never searched out the family of the kedan boy who'd been transported to his world. He should... probably do that. Even if there's nothing he can do, yet.]

If you find anything out, let the rest of the foreigners know. And... maybe everybody else, too. The kedan should know we haven't forgotten about their missing people.

You can count on it.
