She's just woken up not too long ago on the back of a giant turtle. There's an adjustment period. ]


I'm not sure if this is the right way to go about it, but I've been informed by our hosts here that we're required to work for our keep and pay for our own needs [ food, must have food, her life has been doled out in quarter-portions for so long ], so I wanted to offer my services to anyone looking for hire.

I'm a mechanic first and foremost; my experience is with engineering and navigation of starships, but I can apply what I know to virtually almost any kind of mode of transportation — speeders, bikes, any kind of propulsion craft. I'm fairly good with my hands and am capable of building entirely with scrap. I have no preference what type of setting or location the work itself might be in; I'm very flexible. So if there is a need for it, I would appreciate hearing back about any interest.

[ the barest of pauses, and then: ] My name's Rey.

[Sitting in his room in the Midnight Hotel, Kylo Ren gazes at the screen, utterly aghast.

And thus, his day has just become so much worse.

For a while, Kylo Ren considers ignoring the message, and hoping nobody else will mention his presence. Painfully aware as he is right now of the scar she left on his face, he has no desire to deal with her again unless it is to kill. But they will talk, there is no doubt about it... and then she will hunt him down first. Something very close to excitement jolts through him as he recalls the look in her eyes before they were separated. She had been so close.

Before he knows it, his fingers are moving to respond. Reluctant to show her the mark of her victory, he restricts the message to audio.]

How quaint, the scavenger is playing with scrap again. What happened to your aspirations of being a Jedi?

[ Little does he know that she's actually broadcasting this message from a terminal downstairs in the lobby. When her Force-sensitivity re-awakens after its temporary twenty-four hour lull, the hunt will most likely take place sooner than expected.

For now, all she hears is a discombobulated voice over the network — but it's enough. ]

...You. [ It's just his voice, but she'd recognize that tone of disdain anywhere. ] You're here, as well? I don't suppose this place has any more use for the Dark side than it does for the Light, does it. Unless you're planning on skewering the locals on your blade. [ That edge of bitterness should tell him exactly which skewering she's referring to. ]

I'm not surprised you're afraid to show your face to me, after what you've done.

The locals have nothing to fear from me unless they get in my way. I have no loose ends to wrap up with them.

[Her though? A wholly different matter.

The goad is enough to make him switch to video, revealing his faintly sneering face and the new scar he bears.]

I'm not ashamed of my scars. They are a constant reminder of the price you pay for showing mercy. The next time... [He smiles tightly.] Well, you will have the answer to that very soon, won't you?

[When Aya turned on the console, she was smiling. A soft, natural expression. With a small glint of interest in her eyes at the mentioning of engineering and navigation.]

Greetings Ray. I am Aya.

Judging by your words, we appear to share...several common interests and skill sets.

[ The being on the screen shown to her is intriguing, but not unusual to Rey — on Jakku there had been a variety of sentient beings other than humans scrounging out a living in the desert wasteland, and green skin and unusual eyes are nothing inordinately strange.

She nods into the feed. ] Aya. It is good to meet you. Are you a mechanic, as well? Have you been successful in finding work, here?

Among other things, yes.

Before my involuntary arrival in this world, I was stationed on a ship, serving as the navigational computer and fellow Green Lantern. [And since she anticipated the young woman's next question based on experience:] Green Lanterns are a sort of...military organization, would be an adequate parallel. We travel throughout Guardian Space and aid those who otherwise would not possess the strength or power to defend themselves.

[As for the latter part of her question...]

I have been employed for an extended period of time at a locally-run company known as Stark Industries. Here, I am able to make great use of my knowledge in the areas of science and technological advances.

Another mechanic? I expect the kids in the Metal Sector would be glad to hire you. If not, I've spare coin and could use an extra set of hands. Provided you're really as good as you say.

[ She brightens at the instant he mentions spare coin and extra set of hands, and Rey's enthusiasm is almost palpable through the screen. ]

You have? What type of mechanical work would it entail?

Repairs mostly, though I've had some requests for building things from scratch. The kedan tech is a bit unusual in that it has a sort of organic quality, but it's workable. I've a couple of clients in Hatal as well, though I can't say for certain how long that will last if they get this turtle up and about.

[ He has no particular need for the services she's offering, but Bakura can definitely appreciate someone who makes no bones about earning their keep (ironic, he knows, given his own skill sets). So he studies her for a moment on the video feed before answering. ]

You'll be in good company, at least. There are several people here in the same sorts of trades now.

That's good to know. [ There's an eagerness to her features now as she leans forward into the feed. ] Hopefully I'll be able to make myself useful to them.

Are you in this line of work, as well?

You're a mechanic? [A heavily accented voice comes across the network before the video flickers on. Australian, to be exact, not that Rey would know what that is.] ...Did you just say "starship"?

I am. [ a slight nod of affirmation. ] And I did. Are you a pilot of one?

[People really need to learn to keep their threats under wraps. This transmission comes after Kylo's, and the Irishman on the other side of the feed frowns into the camera.]

Rey. My name is Shay Cormac. It's a pleasure to meet you. [A pause.] Are you in danger?

[He can't help but stick his nose in... it was public, after all.]

[ Rey studies the face of the man in the feed; he's dressed in armor completely unfamiliar to her, but that stands out enough to denote him as a warrior of some sort.

At his question, she balks confusedly, dark brows knitting over her eyes. ]

Were you — spying, on my conversation?

[ Danger is a relative term, really, anyway... ]

[So very skeptical.]

Starships?

[sensitively]

Yes? [ she's not sure she understands the interrogative tone, but she's already seen that there's people from different worlds here on the turtle, and perhaps he's unfamiliar - so she holds herself in check from bristling with any sort of impatience. ]

I've worked on several of them. Starfighters, light freighters, Imperial-class Star Destroyers...

[ the list goes on, but she trails off to see if he recognizes anything. ]

[ that prompts a doleful look. ] I have no medical training of any kind. I've only ever bandaged myself on a few occasions, growing up.

[There's something different about this girl. Galen can't quite put his finger on it. When she mentions speeders and starships he perks up, because he's taking it to mean that they share a universe of origin, and her skillset's exactly what he needs.]

[A pause.]

[ ...that stops her wordless. 'scavenger' is something she's heard herself defined as for so very long that it shouldn't feel derogatory in any sense — no matter how petulant Kylo Ren's tone was when he'd used it to describe her — but now that she's had an awakening with the Force and discovered some of her latent abilities, as well as her new role and responsibilities, it feels as though she's being reminded of her lowly upbringing.

Rey tries not to bristle into the video feed, instead schooling her features as neutral as she can to answer. but all bets are off when he says the "l" word. ]

— You know of lightsabers? I have one. [ the excitement - and caution - is almost palpable. are you a Jedi, stranger? ]

...Who are you?

Well, at the moment I'm still trying to handle the leg work, but I am planning on re-opening a tea shop. Maybe it's not the sort of work you've done before, but it could tide you over until you find something better.

[sensitively]

Iroh. [ she gives him a polite and appreciative nod. ] I've learned to try to find work wherever I can take it. What sort of work would it entail?

Did you say starship engineering? [On the console screen is a young man wearing an eager grin, obviously barely able to contain his excitement.]

My name's Tony. If you're an engineer, we can definitely use you here at the College. [Tony has zero influence over the College's hiring of employees. Doesn't matter. He'll make it work.]

Also, I think you might be my new best friend. [STARSHIPS.]

[ Rey nods into the feed in answer; the young man who responds seems eager, if not overly so, but she would never hold that against someone. ] Starships, yes. You're familiar with them, I take it?

And if the College is hiring someone with my mechanical background, I'll come there as soon as I can. [ the sooner to start earning her keep, the better. ]
