[Deon's voice sounds a little different, like it's slightly...processed. The panic, however, is very real.]

Anyone with experience in robotics or engineering, come to the College labs immediately. Please. It's urgent.

(His new ring will be immediately visible, the color swirling ominously - here, a shade of emerald green and there, inky black. It never settles; never stills. The silver too is cold - almost antiquated in design - and it wraps around a pale, slender finger that does not look wholly human.)

I wonder what spell was used to create such exquisite technology? (There is something pleasing about his voice - the way he pitches it perhaps. His tone invites others to listen.) I am uncomfortable showing my face, so you must settle for my voice, I'm afraid.

(He has taken certain precautions - raising his hood for one and tilting the feed so that only his chest can be seen.)

My world isn't terribly different from this one. We have great dragons, yet your turtle would dwarf them all!

(A shift in tone - this one hinting at amusement.)

I can only respect a power that was able to take me from my world and show me another. Yet I was...busy...you see. Terribly busy. What will become of my work?

I am more than happy to lend my aid - (Here, his voice hardens the slightest bit for a listener with keen ears.) However isn't it kinder to ask first?

(No, no, don't ignore the way your stomach dropped. That is a chilling amount of anger behind those friendly words.)

[The audio comes on first, accompanied by a quiet curse. Then the video appears on Solomon leaning over his console. He's in his apartment, but he's wrapped in his coat and his breath is misting, and he's very pale, as if he's been in the cold for hours on end without having been properly attired. His eyes don't fix on anything, and the observant will notice old scars around them.]

I know there's a number of mechanically-inclined in the city. Our heating's just broken down.

[He hesitates.]

Earlier this morning, actually.

[It's mid-afternoon.]

I don't care if you're Foreigner or kedan, but I'll give you extra if you come now to fix it, and do so before Raine gets home.

[And don't mention the part where his fingers are dangerously blue. Or so he assumes they are, given that they're numb, hence the trouble finding the 'on' switch. She absolutely won't see this before work ends, right? Right?]

What does this giant turtle eat?

[ he knows steve is here -- and who knows how many people gunning to catch him. which explains the anonymous text.

[ The image that appears to the network is that of a young woman, dark-haired and dark-eyed, a slightly confused but nevertheless determined expression on her features.

She's just woken up not too long ago on the back of a giant turtle. There's an adjustment period. ]

I'm not sure if this is the right way to go about it, but I've been informed by our hosts here that we're required to work for our keep and pay for our own needs [ food, must have food, her life has been doled out in quarter-portions for so long ], so I wanted to offer my services to anyone looking for hire.

I'm a mechanic first and foremost; my experience is with engineering and navigation of starships, but I can apply what I know to virtually almost any kind of mode of transportation — speeders, bikes, any kind of propulsion craft. I'm fairly good with my hands and am capable of building entirely with scrap. I have no preference what type of setting or location the work itself might be in; I'm very flexible. So if there is a need for it, I would appreciate hearing back about any interest.

[A familiar-sounding Aussie voice.]

I'm interested in learning how it works. Anyone who can tell me, get in touch.

If I understand this right, there could be people here I know, despite that I could swear I just talked to them at home, right? [Luke frowns, looking rather tired as he runs a hand through his hair, sitting at the console in the Welcome Center.] In that case, if anyone knows if Leia Organa or... [A pause, because does it work if the last you knew someone was frozen in carbonite and basically in coma?] Han Solo are here, please tell me. Or tell them Luke's looking for them.

[He smiles briefly, his expression brightening a little in general. Something strikes him then, though, and Luke's gaze lowers for a moment, frowning at something out of view before he looks up again.]

Aside from that, I'd like to know what sort of prosthesis are available, and the tools to repair them. Or if the tools could be adjusted for already existing ones. I don't need any of that at the moment, but you never know.

[Better be as prepared as he can, before something happens, for once. Especially in a new place. He's had his new hand not two weeks yet, and he's very, very aware of it... which is probably why this occurred to him at all.]

Hello, my name is Jacob Kane. [ It looks like Cain is in a kedanese shop somewhere. He waves for the camera, makes sure not to jostle the cup he has by his elbow. ] What I'm going to say is specifically meant for the foreigner population of Keeliai, but in the interest of transparency I'm bringing this up on the public network. There's no point in the suggestion at all if we do anything in secret. That said...

We need some sort of system. No, I'm not talking about government or laws or enforcement thereof, but any type of accountability we can agree to. With the current state of things, it's just not feasible for us to keep acting as individuals — whether or not we have anything aside from our status as non-natives in common, we are a group all on our own and I honestly believe we'd all benefit from having something put into place that would keep us from imploding and possibly taking innocents with us in the crossfire.

Now, at this point, all I really ask is that we discuss it. Ideas, suggestions, thoughts and feelings on the matter. Just to collate how we feel as a whole before maybe organizing a meeting in person to go over finer details. Even if you haven't been here long, or don't believe in the idea of a system, I would like to hear why so we can try to address any issues.

If nothing else, we'll all learn something from the exercise, right?

So, uh...

[The feed flickers on to show Vincent, a black rectangluar object in his hand.]

This is probably going to be a dumb-arsed question, but... There any way to charge mobile phones in this place? I only got 15% battery left, and it's sorta been what's keepin' me busy when I get bored.

[Guess who still hasn't found a job, either. Help a bloke out, eh?]

[Yuri doesn't use the consoles very often, but his face appears on a video message today.]

Hey, this is Yuri.

Everyone in Brave Vesperia meet me in the hotel lobby tomorrow morning. We're going to do something about this fire cleanup.

Oh, and if anyone else wants to help, I'm okay with that too.

See you there.

[And with that, it's done. He's not exactly one to mince words after all.]

[She's not completely convinced that this world and its people aren't malevolent and/or something to avoid yet. The circumstances of this place . . . they're really not her business. It's not the way of her kind to concern themselves with a given planet's inhabitants -- far better to do what Gems need from the planet and have done.]

[Maybe it's Steven's influence still working on her. Maybe it's the fact of watching so many of these people up close, seeing their faces and listening to them in the streets. Maybe it's the couple of individuals that she has met -- barring the one who tried to kill her -- who hint that maybe, maybe there might be more like them.]

[She just knows she has to try.]

[The consoles haven't been hard to figure out. She's watched others using them, not to mention technology far more advanced than them.]

[It's more the resolve that takes work. The conviction to approach. Actually willingly making connection with the other residents of the turtle.]

[As the audio feed actually comes on, her resolve falters. Skitters away. For several moments the Network will be met with silence as Lapis pulls back from the console. Almost flees entirely.]

[But she comes back. Slowly. Hesitates for a few more seconds. Tries again.]

H-Hello? [Her voice wavers. She digs in, forces firmness into it -- as much as she can manage.]

My name is Lapis. Lapis Lazuli.

Someone told me that . . . that this turtle that you're living on, it's sinking.

[More silence. She nibbles at her lower lip, hesitating, before the words surge out.]

Do people breathe underwater here? [Genuine uncertainty on this.] There seems to be a lot here that doesn't. Plants. And animals.

What . . . are people doing about this? [More genuine uncertainty. They might be doing everything in the world about it; she honestly wants to know about the plan.]

[To sum up: Turtle is sinking . . . should Lapis be worried about everyone drowning?]

[More hesitation.]

Also, is . . . there usually not a lot of rain here? I thought the fields on Earth were green . . .

((ooc: I'd love to get Lapis involved in trying to keep the Turtle afloat until someone can heal him if anyone would want to plot. She's an extremely powerful water user, but Asti is also his own continent. --If I've missed someone else's plottings, though, please let me know!))

Monday 8/3
Winds are high today. Most are keeping their laundry in so their unmentionables don't get blown away. Heat continues with little respite.

Tuesday 8/4
A smattering of showers in the morning. Cleared by the afternoon which was muggier than usual. Humidity cleared up by the evening. Winds continue, strong and erratic.

Wednesday 8/5
Weather remains hot, dry and windy. Nothing of note.

Thursday 8/6
I forgot to keep a log of this day. Something came up. Apologies.

Friday 8/7
Nearly lost my spectacles when the wind changed directions. Very heavy winds, many stalls closed early for the day when merchandise kept blowing around.

Saturday 8/8
Woke up with a spider on my face. I put her back in my pot of lavender, poor thing. Winds a bit less strong, but the heat remains nigh unbearable.

Sunday 8/9
Small showers in the afternoon. A lot of flora has wilted in this heat, so hopefully those give it some respite.

Monday 8/10
Many people working in agriculture are concerned about how long this drought is going to last. Heat remains constant.

Tuesday 8/11
Strong winds felled a number of trees. Fog in the evening.

Wednesday 8/12
Fog continued throughout the morning and cleared in the early afternoon. Hot, muggy and windy.

Thursday 8/13
Hot and windy - damage from fallen trees and debris in the wood sector, albeit minor.

Friday 8/14
Dry heat continues through the day and well into the night. Very unpleasant.

Saturday 8/15
Heavy and erratic winds made laundry a bit difficult. If someone happens to locate the vest that got away from me, I'd be most grateful.

Sunday 8/16
It feels like it's getting hotter, although the temperatures have only really ranged from 36c - 40c through the past two weeks and nothing has changed.

I doubt it needs to be said, but please do your best to conserve water.

Continuing with garden tips from last time, here are some more rather helpful hints.
  • To restrict an aggressive plant from taking over your garden, keep it in the pot with the bottom cut out when you plant it. That will make the roots grow straight down rather than cause it to invade the space of your other plants.
  • To keep animals from eating your root bulbs, stake netting over your flower bed. Come growing season, cut holes in it for the flowers to grow, and you'll never lose your tulips to hungry deer again.
  • Compost takes about two weeks to integrate and stabilize in the soil. Do keep this in mind before planting.
  • If you have trouble with insects, natural repellents are garlic, onions, chives and chrysanthemums. Plant these in your garden and you'll have little need for pesticides which are, incidentally, very bad for bees and other pollinating insects.
....

I have been told that some levity would be appreciated in these posts. In light of the approaching trouble, I agree with the sentiment. So... yes. These are some jokes I've collected around town.

[He clears his throat and shuffles through his planner for his notes.]

What is the most musical part of a turkey?

...The drumsticks.

Why was the broom late for work?

...He overswept.

Which bird has the worst manners?

...The mockingbird.

Well, I hope that brightened your day a bit. Thank you, and have a lovely day.

[The feed flickers on, there doesn't seem to be any confusion as to how this device operates, showing a man who looks as though he's been pushed through a mental glass window and several hedges. He licks his lips before opening his mouth to speak.]

Hi... [He pauses, clearing his throat.] My name is... Vincent Moore. You've probably guessed that I'm new here. Well, kinda, anyway. I've been... told I might need a job, so... I'm an engineer and mechanic by trade, if that's something... people need.

[His voice is accented, Australian, a bit slow, hesitant.]

I s'pose I could do some consulting, eh? Dunno if that's a thing you need. I- [He rubs a hand over the back of his head, frowning.] I don't exactly have a CV, but... I'm good with robotics, primarily, but I can probably build anything from bridges to scaffolding.

[A slight smile, there. Ruefully, almost embarrassed. He then sighs.]

I'm bloody crap at these. [And reaching for the switch.]
