Hello.

I would like to be able to make more money and I asked the Kedan how I can do that. They said to have a job is the best way.

I am very good at finding things, so this now is my job. If you have lost something, I will find it if you give me money. You do not have to give me money, I will find it anyway. But it would be nice. There are books about how to make cakes that I would like to buy.

Your...light?

It is what they call it here, yes.

Sometimes I use it. Mostly I just look.

[Magic...is probably what Midii would call it, too. If only because, for all the crazy supernatural things she'd seen over the years, she'd never learned how to distinguish between them. They were all generalized, to her, as impossible things somehow made possible.]

How...does it work? If you don't mind my asking.

[Well there's the million dollar question.]

It is light, born from shadow, and to return to shadow as all things do. Life cut from death, and each fragment pieced together to form the vessel for the other's rebirth. The light opens what is closed, shows what is hidden, remembers what is past, and dispels darkness to lay bare all truths. I am the vessel and the other is dead, so this light is mine now.

[Silence. At first.]

[Midii liked to consider herself pretty clever. Fluent in multiple languages--well, conversationally fluent, thanks to years of having much of everything translated for her automatically--and even in the process of learning the local written language. She understood the words being spoken to her. It was the context in which she...found herself lost.]

How...I mean, what can go wrong? If you can't control it, I mean.

Only that it does not work. This power was not meant for me, it was meant for the other. My will is strong, but not yet strong enough to command it. But I am learning to see the places and things that will awaken it.

[She looked visibly relieved at that.]

[...that probably sounded worse than she meant it to, but she'd been mostly thinking of powers spiraling out of control and causing major trouble for those around them. Not so much about the reason why she had the other's power, or the fact that it still took so much practice.]

I hope you get a lot of business, then. I know there are several shop owners that hire me to run errands who are always losing things.

You are worried that my power would become something like the other's, yes? I worry about that as well.

[She doesn't sound remotely bothered by the insinuation that she could do something dangerous. If anything she seems very aware of just what could go wrong]

But...you seem like you're willing to admit it could happen. Not everybody is. I don't trust people like that as much as they think I should, no matter how long they've been practicing their abilities.

Many things can happen and many things are unknown. It would be foolish to think nothing could go wrong.

[She cracked a smile at that.]
