[ a haggard looking young man sits on a bed, his hands wringing together over and over again as he speaks. There's a hollowness to his stare, and he takes a little longer than most between his sentences, thoughtfully ]

I was working...on having responsibilities again. I baked bread starting at four in the morning until noon. At noon I fed the geese. Depending on the day, I might have free time after that, but by dinner I helped Katniss cook and I would dead-head the flowers in the garden.

The schedule...helped.

[ his hands spasm erratically for a moment, then still as Peeta clenches his jaw ]

And now I'm here. [ he offers a tight smile ] And that means I'm not feeding geese and the garden's not going anywhere anytime soon. Not to mention there's a possible deer overpopulation problem in District Twelve.

[ he sighs ]

So there go my responsibilities. And schedule. I guess this serves as a fair warning for you all.

I'm not good with free time anymore. Dr. Aurelis...[ he pauses ] Something to keep my hands busy will help.

I know how frustrating it can be to have idle hands. Perhaps...you could find work during your stay here that keeps you busy and is also something you enjoy?

I think I might bake. For everyone. [ at least, as long as Astrid is a real person and not a hallucination like he's starting to think this entire experience is ] If I can.

My name's Peeta, by the way.

Bake? That sounds great...what would you make?

My father used to run a bakery, before he-

I learned how to make a lot of things. Cakes, ganache, crepes, cookies, buns, custards...bread's my favorite though. It. Takes up the most time.

Hello Inara. [pause] Are you one of the dead ones?

[ her expression falters only slightly; she isn’t a mind reader and doesn’t know what he was about to say, but she has a guess. ]

I’m sure it’s all delicious. I wouldn’t mind tasting it sometime.

[ that has her reeling a little from shock, though. ]

I don’t…think I quite understand?

[ for a second, there's a spark of humor and his old self in his expression as he grins charmingly ] Good to know I'll have a market ready then.

[ and it fades slowly, replaced by an intent expression ]

I've been told that some of the people here were brought back from the dead.

[ she smiles in return. ]

Very ready. Consider me your first paying customer.

[ the next statement has her pausing and thinking, brow furrowed in a slight frown. ]

I’ve heard…strange things about this place. [ several of her conversations upon her first arrival come to mind. ] That it is a place between life and death. I don’t remember dying, back home. So I suppose that I’m not one of the ‘dead ones’.

No one's been able to remember dying. I wonder if the dead actually exist here then. [ it bothers him. that this place is meant to exist on the platform of Not Real ]

I don't know. It's difficult to say, I suppose.

But -- this is morbid talk. Tell me more about baking. You said bread was your favorite - is there a specific kind?

[ he blinks, as if realizing himself ] Right, sorry. I didn't mean to...offend anyone.

[ he gives some time to the question before answering ]

I make a cheddar bun. It's not as intricate or complicated as my other ones, but. [ he shrugs ] It's nice. I like the color.

No offense at all. [ she smiles lightly. ] Bread is just a more pleasant topic, I think.

[ and it's making her HUNGRY. ]

That sounds fantastic. I could easily go for something like that right about now.

I can agree with that.

I'd be happy to make it for you. Me and...[ he takes a second to remember the name ] Astrid are thinking of opening a bakery soon.

[ she perks. ]

Really? That's a great idea.

Something to keep us occupied and on schedule. [ he tries a smile again ] And me away from people.
