[ a haggard looking young man sits on a bed, his hands wringing together over and over again as he speaks. There's a hollowness to his stare, and he takes a little longer than most between his sentences, thoughtfully ]

I was working...on having responsibilities again. I baked bread starting at four in the morning until noon. At noon I fed the geese. Depending on the day, I might have free time after that, but by dinner I helped Katniss cook and I would dead-head the flowers in the garden.

The schedule...helped.

[ his hands spasm erratically for a moment, then still as Peeta clenches his jaw ]

And now I'm here. [ he offers a tight smile ] And that means I'm not feeding geese and the garden's not going anywhere anytime soon. Not to mention there's a possible deer overpopulation problem in District Twelve.

[ he sighs ]

So there go my responsibilities. And schedule. I guess this serves as a fair warning for you all.

You could always bake me some bread. With seaweed, if you could. Feeling a bit homesick. [Finnick gives a shaky, wary smile.]

[ no response. Peeta just stares at him. his fingers are clenching tight.]

Mutts don't talk, you know.

Your head was ripped off. [ beat ] I don't think you should be talking either.

Bitten. I remember the teeth. [He hadn't died yet, but he knows. He knows what's coming. The teeth on his skin, the stench of roses, the feel of the beasts on him.]

Do you know how they gave you his memories?

I made them. [Sigh.] I'm not dead, Peeta. Ask Katniss.

[ a wane, dry smile ] Asking Katniss isn't the solution to things like this, you know.

Well, I'm not going to tell you to ask Johanna. She might want to kill me still.

[ he's not sure why. but something about him makes peeta less uneasy. even if he is possibly a hallucination or a muttation ]

The price of being popular, I guess.

[ the smile grows ]

Maybe it won't hurt as bad the second time around.

It's a heavy price to pay, but I've always been the right one for it.

[It feels nice to have Peeta sort of accept him.]

I'm not about to risk it.

I think it's the poetry. I might be able to make the best cupcakes, but I can't think of proper metaphors for stars and eyes.

It doesn't sound like the best way to spend your vacation. [ a pause ] Are the others here? Mags? Wiress? The tributes from six? [ because Peeta has decided you're the Authority on dead people now ]

Women do like to be wooed by words, not food. [A pause.] Capitol women, in any case.

If you could really call this vacation. [He goes quiet, a pang of guilt and loss hitting him when Peeta mentions Mags. If he's here, could Mags show up, too?] No. It's just you, me, Katniss, and Johanna.

I think in this case, I'm deferring to your expertise.

[ he frowns sadly ]

I see. I was hoping... [ he shakes his head ] I'm not sure what to do with this place. It's. Complicated.

As most people should in this case.

[He's quiet for a moment.] I know what you mean.

I don't want to go back, but I'm not sure how safe it is for me to be here.

If I get out of line, if I lose myself, can you do it?

[It takes Finnick approximately two seconds to think it over. If it's to protect Katniss, yeah he'd do it. If it's to protect Peeta from the others here, then yeah.] I'll make sure it's painless.

[ he nods ]

Just make it quick, regardless.

[ Peeta sits there, rubbing his hands. hard to make small talk after that one ]

Is there anything you want to...know? About after?

I don't have a show to put on. [aka he will.]

Johanna and Katniss... They already said that Annie was okay. Doing better now. [Most important thing.] Did I die quick?

[ a grim smile, ladies and gentlemen: peeta the gallows humorist ]

I'm pretty sure the mutt bit your head off in one motion.

Oh, good. So a quick death. [Not the exact way he wanted to go, but hey.]

It wasn't televised.

[ he takes a deep breath in ]

And Annie voted no, for you.

We can be thankful for that.

[ Peeta gives an almost imperceptible wince at that ]

I think. In that vote, we all got to know each other a little better. [ Katniss voted Yes. ]

[A frown.] They had their reasons.
