[It's not that Cobb has been here for a while, it's that he learns very, very quickly. It comes with the territory, of being very much accustomed to laying low. He's always been fairly cautious and wary unless personal matters are involved, after all. It's something that comes with the territory when you've been on the field long enough. He deems it appropriate enough to talk to the network as a whole now. Plus, he's asked enough to catch the basics--he's near a console by the window in a cafe in the earth district, nursing the best tea he's had in years and typing anonymously. ]

Interesting for a place not quite near life, death, or dreaming. How many people here are well versed in Oneirology? -Mr. Charles

Dreams?

Dreams. [ She looks at the word and repeats it in her head. D-R-E-A-M-S spells 'dreams'. ]

Were you asking if I knew about dreams, or saying that you knew about dreams?

If you do.

I know a fair bit about dreams. How they work, what they are on a neural level.

And lucid dreaming?

Just the basics. It isn't something I've studied in any depth but it has come up in my studies. Why?

Call it curiosity. Can I ask something?

[ She snorts. ]

You've asked a couple of somethings. One more couldn't hurt.

[ Wow this actually makes Cobb smile. It's a damn miracle, pat yourself on the back. ]

Why study dreams?

[ Well that's easy. ]

Dreams are a function of the unconscious mind attempting to create order from chaos. Studying how they works shows how our brains work and paves the way for advances in neurology.

It was a part of my studies in psychology.

[ This, surprisingly, tells Cobb a number of things. He's quiet, though there's a din of the cafe he's in to retain his anonymous settings, and after a moment's pause there's a sound of something rolling on the counter--a spinning quarter, maybe.

Or a top.

After a few moments he speaks again. ]

I think this may just be a dream. A very big, elaborate one.

[ Her voice turns from academic to thoughtful, almost guilty. ] I think so too, sometimes. Everyone insists that it isn't, but there are times when I still feel like I'm dreaming.

[ He catches the sympathetic tone immediately after the academic--it's something he's used to hearing from his once-wife. Before everything happened. That's the reason why Cobb is quiet. Thoughtful, almost. Not quite distant, but there. ]

Everything's telling me it isn't. But it's the only way I can handle what this is.

[ The only way he can handle it? Kara takes a moment to process that - to think about the loss of Krypton without really thinking about it - and has to agree. ]

If it is a dream, it's not always a bad one.

No--dreams can be good. They can be wonderful. But sometimes you need to know how to wake up. [ Sometimes you can't. ]

I don't know how to wake up from this one. And sometimes it's a nightmare.

Sometimes? [ A simple question that's not really a statement--but he does want you to elaborate. ]

Like a short while ago. The turtle dove under water. We were down for days, and while we were down there we were attacked by zombies. [ IT WAS CREEPY. ]

[ There's silence on Cobb's end. A very long moment and--thunk--the sound of something spinning. Checking reality. ]

I've heard about that. I still don't know if I believe it.

You think I'm lying? [ Perhaps a bit on the sensitive side, but really? ]

No, I don't. That's what's bothering me--there has to be a rational way to explain this.

The explanation we've been given isn't completely irrational. But it isn't the simplest explanation either.

Right--Occam's razor. The simplest solution is most probable.

...Right. [ Who's razor? What now? ] But it's not necessarily true in reality.

It isn't? [ There's just a hint of a smile in his voice. ]
