[ Jack has come back to the city after his fight with Kyle and his talk with Bucky at the shell's edge. He isn't quite ready for video replies yet, knows that despite the usual cheerful timbre he's forcing into his voice it won't cover the fact that his eyes are sad and hollow. ]

Has anyone seen Periwinkle? I went to her suite to give her fresh snow but she's not there and it looks...

[ he fumbles for the right description ]

I... wanted to apologize, for what I said to you on the sled hill. When you brought up-- I, I just shouldn't have snapped back at you like that. I don't have any right to say who trusts you and who doesn't. I'm sorry.

[ private to Kyle ]
... please don't tell everyone about the snow. I get it, okay? It was wrong and fake and cheating and a horrible thing. But just let them have a good memory of it and-- and I won't spread any more snow like that around. Please. I'll... I'll do whatever you want.

[ He doesn't think he could take it if all the people who thanked him for the snow day suddenly turned on him for it. The ones who'd had their hearts lightened enough to even be able to see him for the first time. ]

No, um-- [ he floundered briefly ] no, they're good cold too. Kind of like a, a cubed slushie, yeah!

[ He brought it to his lips only to have a brief moment of consternation when he realized he couldn't breathe on it to warm it up. To cover, he popped the whole thing in his mouth where it stuck a pointed corner visibly against the side of his cheek like a chipmunk who'd swallowed a right angle. ]

[She knew he was lying. Still, the visual of him chipmunking a frozen cube of fruit was too ridiculous not to chuckle. Tilting her hair forward so he wouldn't see the mirth, she took a moment to collect herself before look back up again.]

[Might as well get to the point, before the fruit took them on a permanent tangent.]

Jack, listen, the reason why I said we needed to talk? Well...after you and Kyle talked, he came to see me.

[ It took a thankful few moments of persistent chewing to get the cube down, moments which gave him an opportunity to figure out how to react to her words. When his mouth was clear and he did speak, his voice was carefully neutral. ]

What did he say?

My guess? The abridged version of whatever it was he said to you.

[Her eyes narrow slightly. Clearly, the conversation had not gone so well...but it wasn't Jack she was mad at for the moment.]

He was one of the last people I'd have ever thought would react like that.

I'm sorry.

But words only?

[ Jack's gaze was searching, worried, fretful... but no, no, Kyle would never use those glowing summons on Zatanna, right? He wouldn't do that to a friend. ]

It's not something you have to apologize for, Zatanna. He... he was right about it. About me.

[We'll get back to the pity party in a second, Jack, because say that first part again?]

What do you mean 'words only'?

I mean he didn't do anything to you, right? When he was angry?

[ Jack shook his head, reaching for another cube of fruit. ]

It's not important, I just... I think he just wanted to make a point.

Jack.

[Her voice was low, and she purposely pulled the plate of fruit away to make sure she had his full attention. Avoiding the subject was possibly the worst thing he could do. There wasn't a chance she was going to let this slide.]

What did he do?

[ But he's clammed up now, his expression spooked. Even if Kyle came to talk to her, Jack doesn't want to involve her any more than he has to. If she finds out, she might do something... Zatanna-like. ]

[She absolutely would. Because she was more certain now than ever that something was wrong. Jack was spooked. He wasn't talking. There was only one reason why he wouldn't tell her something.]

He really did do something, didn't he?

[She leans back against her chair for a moment, shoulders slumping and expression turning sad. All too quickly, however, the anger returns.]

What was it? Did he threaten you? Attack?

He never even bothered to tell you why he was so mad, did he?

[The last part, she knew based on their conversation. League Business, he said. Things he wouldn't've even told her had the secret already not been spilled.]

[ He latches gratefully onto the third part of her inquiry because it negated any need to address the two that preceded it. ]

He said I was controlling people. That I was... abusing my power.

Yeah, I've heard that one before.

[Granted, it wasn't her-her, and she'd been assure more than once that the differences were vast enough that it shouldn't matter...but right now, this wasn't about her. Not directly.]

He's wrong, you know.

[She hates it when he gets like this. It seemed to be happening more and more frequently lately, too.]

You don't look like much of a donkey to me.

[ Jack raises his hands behind his head, flapping them to mimic long donkey ears but it's obvious his heart isn't in the silliness. ]

[She tries to smile in return, but it doesn't quite reach her ears.]

Then let me ask you this: what exactly did you do that day?

Because, from where I was standing, the only thing that happened was that you made a lot of people around you happy.

It was fake.

[ The word is ugly when spoken aloud and he flinches to hear it even if it's his own voice. ]

There's magic in the snow that... that can change how you feel. So even though wasn't controlling them, it still means that I-- I basically gave them a lie.

I wasn't affected by the snow.

I still had fun. Unless you're saying that was a lie, too.

But maybe it made you want to have more fun than... you wanted to.

[ It sounded pathetic even to him. ]

I don't know.

Pretty sure that's not possible.

I know it sounds hard to believe, Jack, but there are actually people on this Turtle who do have fun around you. Magic or no magic. I just happen to be one of them.

[Plus, there was the whole part where she would know if a spell had been cast on her. If not right away, then in the aftermath.]

[ It's something he'd needed to hear, something he hadn't realized he'd needed to hear until then, but he leans over and wraps his arms tightly around her for a moment. ]

[She give a slight gasp when his arms unexpectedly wrap around her, both from the spontaneity of the movement itself...and the sudden cold that accompanied it. Not enough to cause her pain, though, and soon enough, she returned the hug.]

Feel better?

Not really.

[ The admission is accompanied by a weak laugh, because the situation really didn't seem any different, but her words gave him something to hold onto. ]

But what you said means a lot. Thank you, Zatanna.

[ He released her and sat back before his chill became uncomfortable. ]
