There's something happening. People are talking about self-defense and barriers. There's some plague going around, we're still on rations, the kedan don't like us, and things are only getting worse. Everyone's realized that by now.

The question is, who knows what's going to happen next?

Oh, and if anyone has any idea what happens to the people who leave here? The ones that disappear? That would be appreciated.

Well, we'll have to make what preparations we can, and hope that we can fulfill our duty. [Although she's glad that more people are asking these sorts of questions.]

Hopefully, if the barrier is intended to keep something out, some kind of cure will be found for Tu Vishan before it finally fails.

What exactly is our "duty" here?

And what do you mean about a cure?

We were brought here to fight something- something extremely powerful, and extremely evil.

As for a cure... I don't know. Something that will end Tu Vishan's illness.

You're telling me there might be a cure for the ground here? [He's still a little bit in denial about the turtle.]

I don't know, save that its powerful, and doesn't have a fixed form- it's probably some kind of spirit.

The ground is a turtle and that turtle is ill.

So someone brought us here to fight a ghost shapeshifter after putting us on rations and not giving us any weapons? That's really what's going on here?

Why didn't the Emperor bring a vet aboard?

There are some weaponsmiths here, and some of us have been trying to teach others- for example, I've been teaching people with no abilities of their own how to use magic.

I suggested the foreigners try to heal it the Emperor, once. She claimed that wasn't why we were here and that it was likely to make things worse.

You teach magic? [He clearly finds that idea completely ridiculous.]

Magic is a subset of that, unless you mean the sort that involves pulling rabbits out of top hats- and that's just sleight of hand.

Chaotic magic. It's primarily used by necromancers and others like them, and by various Free magic spirits and elementals.

Necromancers? Elementals?

Why do you teach magic to people? And how?

At first it was just a way for people to defend themselves- not every enemy can be stopped with steel, and after what I've learned about our purpose here, I intend to train as many willing students as I'm capable of.

As for how- there's a baptism, and from there it's mostly a matter of memorizing and employing different marks.

A baptism? You're converting people to a new religion?

It's not new, and it isn't exactly a religion. Think of it more as an- I suppose you could call it an initiation? It's necessary to draw on the Charter's power.

It's new for the people being "initiated." Do you all drink Koolaid together too?

Occasionally my students and I drink tea after lessons, but I don't want any of them to try using magic while they're intoxicated.
