[Sabriel looks exhausted, but there's a certain note of satisfaction in her voice as she speaks.]

Atam was... interesting. I found several rather interesting things there. [Two of them are laid out behind her- a trident and a sword.] Including two books of Charter Magic from my own world. The shopkeeper said he simply found them one day, which brings me to my next point. [A brief look of anxiety comes over Sabriel's face, and her tone becomes something between a student giving a presentation and a teacher giving a lecture.]

I know the kedan are unfriendly, and that many here cannot defend themselves. Since I was a child, I have been taught how to wield a sword, and was tutored at my school in the basics of sorcery, and I want to share that knowledge with those who may need it to protect themselves.

[And Sabriel's long white fingers trace a glowing symbol in the air- the mark for light, to be specific, and lets it collapse into a bright pinpoint of light, illuminating the room.]

Charter Magic is not a toy, and can be a powerful tool in the hands of the skilled- a tool to harm, create, heal... or do many other things, if you know the correct symbols and have the power to use them properly.

[Sabriel lets herself relax a little.]

[Alcuin considered his attire carefully. In the end, he goes with a charcoal grey tunic and breeches with silver embroidery that make him look quite serious- the solemnity of becoming a magic-user makes them feel appropriate.

Properly clad, he feels almost steady as he knocks on Sabriel's door.]

[Sabriel opens the door, dressed in what she'd been wearing when she was brought to Tu Vishan, minus sword and bells- a long hauberk made of tiny scales of grey, overlapping ceramic plates, and a deep blue surcoat embroidered with tiny silver keys. Somehow it seemed appropriate to wear an Abhorsen's clothes for this.]

Alcuin, come in. [Sabriel bows deeply, before gesturing for him to come inside, leading him towards the sitting room- the only room on the ground floor with a fireplace.]

[Alcuin admires the embroidery work on that surcoat. He's gained an appreciation for such things over the past month, working in Favrielle's shop. His shop, now. He follows her inside.]

What must I do?

[Sabriel quickly puts one finger into the ashes of the fire and traces over her own mark with the ash before grabbing the bottle.]

Ah- well, you don't need to kneel, but it might make it easier- I need to pour water over you as part of the baptism.

Oh, of course. [They're nearly the same height, but he does have two years on her. He kneels without a great deal of self-consciousness, watching what she does.]

[Sabriel uncorks the bottle and holds it up as she starts to chant. The invocation for a baptism is longer than most, but the words feel natural to her- and the bottle begins to pulse with light, as Sabriel felt more and more marks stream through her fingers into the water- some she had never seen before, others that she'd memorized years ago- and then just as swiftly, she fell silent, touching the bottle first to the ground, and then to her forehead, before upending the glowing water over Alcuin's forhead.

She had to shut her eyes at the sudden burst of light as the water touched him]

By the Charter that binds all things, I name thee Alcuin!

[Sabriel sighed with relief as she opened her eyes and saw the wood ash sign she'd made on her own forehead appear on Alcuin's as it disappeared from her own.]

[Alcuin's eyes widen as the marks flow into the water and it begins to glow. Somehow... somehow, it makes it more real than he ever expected it to be. His eyes follow Sabriel's movements, at least until she prepares to pour the water over his head- he can't help closing his eyes as tightly as she does at the flash of light.

He hears her sigh and opens his eyes, feeling his forehead. There's ash there, the ash that was on her forehead a moment ago. How odd.]

It- it worked, then?

Yes, it did.

[Sabriel rests two fingers over Alcuin's mark to make sure- and for a split second, she's feels surrounded by swirling galaxies of Charter marks, until she withdraws her hand.]

[He brushes the ash away after she pulls her hand away, wondering what he looks like now. Well, people will be quite surprised when they return from Atam.]

Thank you. It was- I've never seen anything like it.

Well, I'm happy to have been of some help.

Meet me here tomorrow, and I'll start teaching you actual magic.

A great deal, I am sure.

At the same time? I will look forward to it.

I am too. I've tutored other students before, but I've never been someone's only teacher before. [And Sabriel knows she's skilled- better than anyone else in her class- but her knowledge is still sadly lacking in some areas. There's a reason she's devouring the books she found in Atam.]

I have been reckoned a quick learner in other matters. Perhaps it will help. [Alcuin is extremely intuitive and intelligent, so hopefully it shouldn't be too much trouble.]

It should, but- Charter magic can be exhausting, when you first begin to use it.

I will remember that. Should I bring anything? Tea, perhaps?

Tea would be lovely. Don't wear anything too flammable. [The last line is said in a joking tone. Spells for light are easy and unlikely to backfire- that's why they're among the first ones novice Charter Mages learn.]

[He smiles, apparently taking it in the way she means it, though he will remember to be careful.] I shall. Tomorrow, then.
