[Sabriel looks exhausted, but there's a certain note of satisfaction in her voice as she speaks.]

Atam was... interesting. I found several rather interesting things there. [Two of them are laid out behind her- a trident and a sword.] Including two books of Charter Magic from my own world. The shopkeeper said he simply found them one day, which brings me to my next point. [A brief look of anxiety comes over Sabriel's face, and her tone becomes something between a student giving a presentation and a teacher giving a lecture.]

I know the kedan are unfriendly, and that many here cannot defend themselves. Since I was a child, I have been taught how to wield a sword, and was tutored at my school in the basics of sorcery, and I want to share that knowledge with those who may need it to protect themselves.

[And Sabriel's long white fingers trace a glowing symbol in the air- the mark for light, to be specific, and lets it collapse into a bright pinpoint of light, illuminating the room.]

Charter Magic is not a toy, and can be a powerful tool in the hands of the skilled- a tool to harm, create, heal... or do many other things, if you know the correct symbols and have the power to use them properly.

[Sabriel lets herself relax a little.]

Can you use it to keep people from dying if they get hurt real bad?

[ She's clearly thinking of someone in particular. Gert may be dead, but Rikki got hurt the other night, and so did Victor even if he has a healing power, and she really doesn't want to lose anybody else like Miss Olivia or Tommy or Rikki or anybody. ]

Magic cannot heal all wounds instantly, but it can repair wounds enough to keep people from dying, if a mage is skilled enough.

[Sabriel can definitely spot the question in the girl's tone, though.]

Is someone hurt?

No. Well, I mean, Rikki got her arm broke last night but um. So like, if somebody got shot, if somebody knew magic good enough, they could make it so she didn't die if they got there in time? Or... or something?

[There's a long, long pause. Sabriel doesn't want to promise more than she can give.]

Depending on where they were shot, it's possible.

You should definitely teach that to people, then. So they can keep their friends from being hurt too bad.

I will. Not everyone has an aptitude for healing magic, but I will try to teach it to all my students.

I wish I could do magic. I tried to use Nico's staff once but it didn't do anything. Or maybe I did it wrong, but she usually just says the spell she wants and it works, and Chase did it once. Maybe mutants can't do magic unless that's what their power is, like the Scarlet Witch!

[ How do we deal with missing Gert? WE RAMBLE ABOUT NON-RELATED THINGS. ]

Excuse me, but what are mutants? And what- who is the Scarlet Witch?

[Sabriel can deal with rambling preteens- she was a prefect at her school, after all.]

I'm a mutant! We're humans that got mutated in their DNA when they were babies before they were born, and so they have powers and stuff! Scarlet Witch was one of the Avengers and she could do magic stuff.

I see. And what is your power, and who are the Avengers?
