[Sabriel looks exhausted, but there's a certain note of satisfaction in her voice as she speaks.]

Atam was... interesting. I found several rather interesting things there. [Two of them are laid out behind her- a trident and a sword.] Including two books of Charter Magic from my own world. The shopkeeper said he simply found them one day, which brings me to my next point. [A brief look of anxiety comes over Sabriel's face, and her tone becomes something between a student giving a presentation and a teacher giving a lecture.]

I know the kedan are unfriendly, and that many here cannot defend themselves. Since I was a child, I have been taught how to wield a sword, and was tutored at my school in the basics of sorcery, and I want to share that knowledge with those who may need it to protect themselves.

[And Sabriel's long white fingers trace a glowing symbol in the air- the mark for light, to be specific, and lets it collapse into a bright pinpoint of light, illuminating the room.]

Charter Magic is not a toy, and can be a powerful tool in the hands of the skilled- a tool to harm, create, heal... or do many other things, if you know the correct symbols and have the power to use them properly.

[Sabriel lets herself relax a little.]

Yours is really different too . . . I've never seen anyone cast like that, with drawing symbols.

Well, sometimes marks are spoken, but most of the time they're written out. Are yours always spoken?

Always! Some of the spells are a little more complicated, and you have to say a few lines along with the activation word. But they're always spoken.

It kind of feels good, too . . . like a battle cry or something.

With yours, do they have their own language when they do get said aloud, or are they just words that you'd use in your everyday language?

Ah, some Charter spells require more marks than others- sometimes dozens, or hundreds.

And the spoken incantations are another language. Each mark has its own name.

[Big eyes.] How do you get the time to write it all? Like . . . in an emergency?

Most of those spells aren't intended for combat. [And the others rely more on visualization than writing.]

What are they for?

[She had to ask. You know she did.]

Enchanting things, mostly. Or creating Sendings- magical servants.

Enchanting in what kind of way?

. . . I think people mostly use golems for that in my world. The magical servants part, I mean.

Except they're big. And don't really fit into houses.

As in imbuing mundane materials with magical qualities.

Oh, Sendings are- about the same size as humans. And about the same shape.

We do a little of that too! But . . . usually for combat and things. Lina-san told me about a cursed knife once. It tried to kill her and Gourry-san. . . . People do some kind of strange spells.

[She considers a moment.] Do you ever do things for protection? Like . . . enchant an object for that?

You mean magical armor? I'm familiar with the theory, but sadly lacking in practice. [Another thing she wanted to study. Maybe someday, she'd even know enough to create something like a Paperwing.]
