Forgive my candid speech, but a situation was recently brought to my attention. While I feel the content may be upsetting to some, it can not go unaddressed.

There is, to the best of my knowledge, no contingency plan should the turtle sicken further. Nor in the case that the situation with the Kedan grows intolerable. In either case, if we are away from land, which seems likely, there is nowhere for anyone to go. We would be, in effect, marooned.

What we need is a proper ship, or ideally, a fleet, to support the population in the instance that the turtle is no longer inhabitable. Am I correct in assuming that no one has begun this undertaking? As we are currently experiencing a time of plenty, it seems foolish to delay beginning any longer.

Does anyone here know anything of shipbuilding? About all I could manage on my own would be a raft, and I wouldn't trust something like that on the ocean. If someone can give instructions, I can volunteer some time.

I can attempt to navigate, but that means I should start keeping a map of the turtle's travels. Which means I'll need a good precision clock; I have the rest of my supplies on my person or in my rooms.

I know the basics of construction, though this is more ambitious than anything I've attempted before. But I'm sure with some careful planning and a skilled crew, we could manage a seaworthy vessel.

Perhaps you could find a sextant and a compass. They would be most helpful in charting a course.

Then it's a great idea! I want to see them again, it's been so long since I got to ride on one. Nothing says "trans-Atlantic crossing" like an old-school frigate. There's still a few that are around, like the USS Constitution, I get to see that one when it's in Boston.

I am not familiar with the Constitution [or, for that matter, the United States] but a frigate-built ship would be an appropriate first step. We cannot plan appropriately without knowledge of what surrounds us.

I've considered it, but a lack of skilled labourers makes it something of a difficult undertaking.

I agree, though. If the materials can be scraped together, it's a viable idea. I'd be glad to help fund it, if necessary.

I have some experience with repair, and sailing, of course, though I have never built a ship before. Still, I understand the rudimentary aspects well enough that I feel we could attempt it.

We'd need to set up a fund to purchase wood- even firewood is hardly inexpensive here, particularly with the rationing.

[Percy shrugs] Boats listen to me. Sailboats are the best, but I can work with something bigger, too, especially if we're doing something with a mast and sails instead of an engine.

In the absence of an Aerial Corps, I suppose a Navy is a suitable alternative. [Trying very hard not to sound disgruntled. IF YOU MUST.] But it would surely be very difficult to acquire the materials necessary to build a ship? I have not seen very many trees around the turtle, after all.

Even with what supplies we have, it would be difficult, I think, to acquire anything like a fleet without the support of the Emperor, and I do not think she would wish anyone to leave the turtle.
