I am a Charter mage and a necromancer, in addition to having some skill with a sword, and I was trained to fight the Dead, and deal with Free magic spirits that cannot be killed.

Charter magic is not something passed on by blood- any mage with sufficient training can give others the ability to use it, and I intend to take on as many willing students as I'm able to.
