A turtle, huh? [ ace sounds surprisingly calm for someone who has recently found themselves on a giant turtle. it's partially a product of the world he comes from, and partially the fact that he's been here for while by the time he's posting this. also, he's exhausted which helps with the avoiding public freak outs. ] Is it a Sea King, or something else? And does this place always make it feel like you've got Seastone on you?

[ it's not intended as a subtle way of finding out if anyone from his world around, but, hey. if it does that as well, that would be awesome. ]

Ah, I should probably introduce myself, shouldn't I? I'm Portgas D. Ace. It's nice to meet you all. [ a beat. ] So to speak, anyways.

I don't suppose anyone's seen an annoying rubber kid around. Kind of stupid, wears a straw hat, answers to Luffy? Or a giant man with a white mustache named Whitebeard? [ he's crossing his fingers and hoping the answer is no. ]

Oh...yeah...[She holde up her arm and there on her wrist is a gold armlet with a large ruby jewel in the middle of it.]...This is the Lamp of Fire. It acts like a massive amplifier.

Devil's Fruit, huh? That has a nice ring to it...though I guess I'd be cautious eating something like that. [Though the excited look on her face doesn't match up at all with her talk of caution.] So have you eaten one then?

[ ooooo, shiny. ] That jewel is what lets you control fire? [ he smiles, and shakes his head a little. that is way different from anything he's used to. ] Cool.

I have. [ three guesses as to which one he ate, and the first two don't count. ] It tasted like shit.

[ WHICH IS CLEARLY THE IMPORTANT THING HERE. not the crazy powers that came from it, but the fact that it tasted really, really awful. ]

[Don't get ideas.] Well, the ability is one of those things that you have or you don't have, the Lamp just makes you more powerful. [Does she pet it fondly, yes she does.] Bigger booms, fancier light shows, nastier burns...all that good stuff.

Can't be any worse than the food we have in El-Hazard, that's why booze was invented...and soy sauce. [Could it be fire, fire...fire?] So...that's why you were interested, huh?

So it's something you're born with.

Is El-Hazard where you're from? [ it certainly sounds like it, anyways. and he grins at the second part. ] Ah, yeah. I've never seen anyone else use fire before like I do.

Sort of...I guess it's the disposition your born with. Like...if you're not a girl and you don't have the fiery personality then you're probably not suited to be a Fire Priestess. They tried to tell me at the abbey that I wasn't priestess material. [She sure showed those old bitties ohohohooo~]

That would be correct, it's a lot different from this place, there are no oceans for starters. [It's not often she comes across a firebrand, not in this world anyway.] There are very few fire users here, but you're in awesome company just so you know! But...I'm curious now, you'll have to show me how your abilities manifest when you're able, everyone seems to have their own style.

And you proved them all wrong. [ ace is highly amused by that. mostly because proving people wrong has been a theme in his own life so seeing echoes of it in another fire user is interesting. ]

No oceans? That sounds awful. [ what a terrible place 8C ] Ah, sure. Once I get access to that part of me, I'd be happy to show you. Though it seems like it's pretty different from yours.

Of course! Who says a guttersnipe can't be a priestess? [She's quite proud of being the only priestess who knocked on the abbey doors as opposed to being invited to attend.]

We do have a Great River that splits El Hazard down the middle...but it's not so...so much. Are oceans supposed to be this big? [She's only had the turtle to compare to and her experience has been underwhelming.] Alright! Well I hope so, variety being the spice of life...and the worlds being so different and all. It's more exciting when our abilities aren't exactly the same.

Certainly not me. [ he likes her already, if only for that comment. guttersnipe firebugs for the win. ]

In my experience, they are. [ he laughs and shrugs. ] Then again, most of my world is ocean. Outside of the Red Line, everything is made up of islands.

This damn island better not sink...[she doesn't look nervous at all]...the largest body of water I've ever had experience with is a natural spring. I'm not so sure I could swim all the way to the next island...unless push came to shove.

Heh. You'd probably do better than me. I can't swim at all.

[ one has to wonder why people like him ever go out to sea at all, if they can't swim... ]

But why!? In a world that's mostly ocean they have Keep Your Head Above the Water 101 right? [Because that should be one of those mandatory things.]

There's two things that happens to people who eat a Devil's Fruit. One is they gain the power of that fruit. The second is that they forever lose the ability to swim.

[ so it's basically the worst weakness ever for people who work on the water. ]

So it's like a double edge sword then, that sounds like a pretty harsh exchange...but I guess power comes with a price sometimes huh?

Yeah. And most people know going in what eating that fruit will do to them, so it's almost never a surprise that you suddenly can't swim.

[ but there's always a few exceptions too... ]

Well if it's a price you're willing to pay then that takes a lot of character, especially if you're doing it for the right reasons.

[Shayla would be the exception, anything considered food is fair game...a little soy sauce and everything is edible.]

... is there a right reason for doing that?

[ most everyone he knows has eaten them to get a one-up on the competition on the seas. both the pirates and marines alike. ]

Well, I suspect any kind of sacrifice should be something you make because it's what you want. Maybe that's not so noble coming from a priestess, but I think that's a right reason.

[Even if that reason comes with getting a one-up, Shayla's philosophies tend to center around doing what you want to do.]

It's reasonable though right? You can't please anyone unless you can please yourself first...or something...

[Or maybe that's for happiness, but it works in this case.]

Makes sense to me.

[ kind of. sort of. not really. but it sounds like the kind of thing that would make sense to people that aren't him, so he'll go with it. ]
