[ Finding out that Pepper's stocks in Stark Industries have been transferred to him - and because she'd been running it, he can only assume that it's the lion's share - and that that means she's presumably gone is not the way he wants to start the day. But it is what it is and there's nothing he can do about it.

He's wearing the suit, though the helmet's off, and the expression on his face is as professionally detached as the matter-of-fact tone of his voice when he speaks. ]

It's come to my attention that Pepper Potts may no longer be in residence in the city.

[ That covers that and he's not lingering on it. If he does, he'll wonder what that means, if some piece of her has gone back to the world she remembers or if she's dead and her body is being recycled or whatever it is they do with clones when they're gone. It isn't something he needs to worry about right now. Not in front of an audience. So he moves right along to business. ]

I've been informed that per her request, her interests in Stark Industries have been transferred to me. For those of you don't know, I'm Tony Stark, and if you work for SI, it means you're working for me.

[ May whatever aliens people consider gods help them all. ]

If you do, I want to know who you are and what you do for the company. If you don't, and you want to, talk to me.

And be prepared for change. It's coming.

[ What that change is, he doesn't know yet. But once he finds out what the company's been doing, he'll figure out the right path for it to take under his leadership. And this time, it's going to be a damn sight better than the last time he was at the helm. ]

I call you random things all the time! Why wouldn't I do it with him too? Seriously, the Bruce, I'm so disappointed right now.

[angermanaging]

You also call me by my name. And everyone else seems pretty convinced that's his.

That's because he keeps saying it is. But hey, tell you what. Next time I talk to him, I'll ask him what he wants to be called too. And if it's something else, I'll report back.

[angermanaging]

Thanks. [Yeah no he doesn't care. He's not going to call him anything.]

You should ask her what he calls her. They talk. [He sounds exactly as dubious and unenthused about this as you would expect.]

I'm vaguely offended that I'm not special anymore.

[ That's the problem with being an immature brat with abandonment issues. ]

Besides, that's kind of breaking the bro code. You don't steal another guy's nickname for someone.

[ It should probably be noted that Tony doesn't actually know what the bro code is and, having lacked bros all his life, is making this up. ]

[Like Bruce knows what the bro code is either.

He dutifully intones,] You'll always be special, Tony. I don't think he talks to anyone else. Just you... and her.

[And the other her, as in Betty, but she's not here. Bruce hasn't found out yet whether he'll talk to this Betty.]

Yes I will. Don't forget it.

[ It's okay if he does. Tony will just start reminding him. Daily. ]

And it might be a good thing. The talking. It means more calm and less smashing.

[He can't help being vaguely disparaging in his response.] Don't give him too much credit. The only reason they talked is because he tried to smash her, and he couldn't. She has some kind of shield that makes her almost invulnerable.

[And he's adding an encryption because he doesn't know what the Archive has public or not in terms of her abilities.]

Oh. So I am special. Okay.

[ The Hulk never tried smashing him. Looks like the Bruce is right after all. ]

Is it the magical Archive mojo that's protecting her?

[angermanaging]

[He has to roll his eyes at that, not dignifying the special comment with a remark. Bruce has even seen for himself now that the Hulk had never tried smashing him, astoundingly enough.]

I think so. If you're going to have a massive repository of knowledge, it makes sense to protect it against manipulation.

This magic thing. We're going to have to figure it out, aren't we? Now that it's real.

I met a witch. I can ask her. And Loki. See if they can give me some insight into how it works. Do you know anybody that can do it or use or whatever?

[angermanaging]

I've been working on that, [he answers immediately, ready to pounce on this topic now that it's been brought up.] I made something before you got here, the PSDs. I'll have to show you. I tapped into the native energy network enough to get a measurable effect on an end user, with salvaged satellite tech as a medium. I'm hoping we could go a few steps further.

I have some magic consults I worked with to create the PSDs, but no one I'd consider my go to.

[He's masking his disapproval of asking Loki by focusing on the job.]

So you're a wizard now too?

[ That's what it sounds like. At least, that's what his rudimentary understanding of magic is: tapping into the network of energy surrounding a person or a place and manipulating it for a desired effect. ]

How difficult was it to utilize the energy present here?

[angermanaging]

[He snorts.] No. I utilized preexisting tech to do what it was already doing, but in a different way. And we're out of said tech now.

[Bruce is getting over his distaste for magic, but that doesn't mean he wants to start using it himself.]

It wasn't too difficult, but I had a lot of help, and I was basing it off of something that already did that. We're going to have to start from scratch. [Hence why his progress has stalled.]

[manofiron]

So you want me to be a wizard.

[ The next time Bruce comes over, he'll find Dummy wearing a little red hat - not unlike an organ grinder's monkey - and a set of wings. Because Tony doesn't know what kind of assistants wizards have, but he knows that the witch from Wizard of Oz has flying monkeys, and if anyone's a flying monkey, it's Dummy. ]

No wizards. Let's keep this as technical as we can, okay? [It's probably a vain hope. Bruce won't even raise an eyebrow at Dummy's outfit, to be honest. He expects crazier by now.]

It's PSDs-- "Power surge devices". I didn't name them. I was thinking we'd do something different. And...

[There's a pause, as he considers whether to add something, but they're close enough now that he decides to go for it. Tony can tell him to back off if he wants to.]

This post kind of exploded, [he says carefully.] You okay?

[manofiron]

Technical. Okay. [ A beat. ] PSD isn't really all that technical. Just, you know, saying.

[ There's the honest answer, the flippant answer, the bullshit answer, and the really honest answer. He waffles for a second on which to choose. ]

How many missiles do you think fit in the definition of okay? Liberal estimates are fine, doesn't have to be conservative.

[angermanaging]

[Yeah no, he's abandoning half-serious shop talk for this. They can and do talk about work constantly. He can break for something serious.]

No missiles fit into 'okay', [he says with a faint sigh.] Can I do anything?

[manofiron]

I don't know, I'm just...

[ He trails off, at a loss and unable to find the words he wants to use. ]

I feel like I'm drowning and trying to swim away is only making me sink deeper.

[angermanaging]

[His voice firms, sharpens.]

What is it that's bothering you?

[There's something underneath this that's upsetting him, more than just a general malaise at everything that he's undergone. While that's considerable, Bruce feels like there must be something contributing more than the rest.]

[manofiron]

I've felt like a ghost ever since I got here.

[ A little chuckle, slightly too high, creeps up the back of his throat. ]

And now I am one. I'm a clone and a ghost. How fucked up is that? And my alternate reality girlfriend has been throwing Tonys at the Tony-shaped hole in her life and now there are too many and they're all wrong in the first place.

[ And now he sounds like he's cracking up. Groaning, he just covers his face with his hand. It works for ostriches in the sand. Maybe it will work for him. ]

[angermanaging]

[He goes silent and listens to this, expression impassive but patient, open. Honestly, he doesn't know what had gone on between Tony and Pepper. He'd never spoken to her about it, and Tony had never brought it up; he also hasn't touched on his distress over the cloning since his arrival, and out of respect, Bruce hasn't pried into it. Tony had let him keep his silence on everything he'd seen in Death, and he'd returned it.

It seems like he does want to open up right now, though. And Bruce remembers how, out on the turtle head, he'd taken a chance and overtly stated that he didn't think he was a freak. Something Bruce never felt helped him all that much to hear, but seemed to have helped Tony.]

I have all the memories you do now, [he says abruptly.] And I've met all the... Tonys that have been here. You're the one that I think of first when I hear that name. Even before-- the one at home.

[Bruce shakes his head, wondering if he's accomplishing anything or just speaking to himself. He doesn't know how to do this comforting thing. He's too out of practice, however good his intentions.]

I don't know, maybe that doesn't mean anything.

[manofiron]

[ It’s like an unexpected anchor in storm, one that he grabs onto before he realizes that he’s doing it and only slowly comes to realizes that he’s holding onto something. That his head’s above water now and he’s no longer drowning in it.

Ever so slowly, he drops the hand he has pressed against his face. Admissions like this from Bruce are about as rare as a double blue moon and for that reason, he can’t take them lightly. ]

You sure you’re not just saying that because I’m letting you see my reactor?

[ It’s a lame attempt at a joke, but it harkens back to that conversation on the turtle’s head, subtle hint that, just as he had then, he’s listening to what he’s saying instead of brushing it off. ]

Or are you trying to discourage me from haunting you at night? Because I'm probably going to do that anyway now that I know where you live.

[angermanaging]

[It's the hand gesture more than anything that tells him he must've gotten through, Tony letting him see his face again instead of that instinctive effort to conceal that Bruce knows all too well. That's twice that his suspicion has worked-- though it's counter-intuitive to Bruce, Tony wants direct assurance of his opinion of him. His, specifically, it seems like. It takes three times to make a pattern, but Bruce is feeling pretty confident that the pattern will be confirmed, and it's something of a relief to finally have a handle on how to help who has become his closest friend.

The fake joking about serious topics he already knew how to do.] I haven't seen it yet, [he answers, quirking an eyebrow and relaxing slightly that he seems to have averted a crisis.

With a hint of dryness,] You're already going to haunt me during the day since I work for you now. At least let me get some sleep.
