[Console, whatever. Sure she got the run down on the thing but Mai's pretty much been ignoring it for the past day. She hasn't even bothered to really look on the network itself even if she has no intention of making an entry to it.

Now she's bothering though, mainly because she just wants to ask:]

So explain this war business to me again. Or at least try to convince me why I should care. Because right now? I really can't find much inside to say I should.

Well, if we don't win, literally everyone might die.

Alright. So how do you know that's going to actually happen.

Scientifically speaking? I don't. The only person who knew what was going on here managed to die before you got here without actually passing her knowledge on. All we've got out scraps.

But I can tell you firsthand that this monster we're fighting can do some pretty nasty things.

Firsthand is better than hearsay.

Yeah. Well firsthand, I can tell you that if we don't deal with him, he can and will do a lot of damage and a lot of killing.

[She sounds a little humbler with that. Not that she ever sounds proud but she's a touch less dismissive.]

How exactly is everyone 'dealing with him' then.

Poorly. [The timing and terseness say it's a joke, but her tone and expression say otherwise.]

[And at that reaction Mai can only sigh.]

So, you convinced we need to fight yet?

For ourselves maybe. I'm not about to fight for the benefit of them though.

[Ava sighs. She's not quite feeling up to arguing in favor of altruism, and really, in practical terms they just need committed soldiers. The why doesn't matter.] Close enough.
