[Console, whatever. Sure she got the run down on the thing but Mai's pretty much been ignoring it for the past day. She hasn't even bothered to really look on the network itself even if she has no intention of making an entry to it.

Now she's bothering though, mainly because she just wants to ask:]

So explain this war business to me again. Or at least try to convince me why I should care. Because right now? I really can't find much inside to say I should.

Going along with all this seems like the fastest way to get back home, so that's why I care at least. [Seriously, she just finished getting out of a war in her own world, why'd she have to get tossed into another one!!]

So what if you don't really care about going home then?

... You don't? [But.... why.......] Well in that case, uh... I guess so you don't end up hurt or worse? Things can get pretty dangerous here every now and then.

I'd rather go home personally but there's nothing I have to go back to. I was mostly curious what 'inspiration' there would be for someone who didn't care at all though.

So this war isn't a constant thing.

Not as far as I can tell. I mean, I guess it's always "looming over" us and whatnot, but it's pretty easy to catch a break here. [She's probably too good at catching time off tbh.]

Yep. Think "thousands and thousands of years" for a while.

[Now Mai looks genuinely surprised.]

Thousands... doesn't sound like what's his name is doing that hot.

That'd be my guess honestly, but after all that time the guy's still considered to be a huge threat. That probably means something.

It stands to reason. He's not won in a thousand years but the other side hasn't exactly beaten him either.

Yeah... A war that's lasted a thousand years, huh? [She lets out a sigh.] It's actually kind of amazing they've all fought for this long, for both sides.

A thousand is a little much. ... Where I'm from [the notion is still a little odd for her so there's a moment of hesitation] our own war was a hundred. Compared to this that's nothing, of course.

Yikes, a hundred? [She frowns.] I'd say that's still pretty long. Back home, things had been on and off with another country for a while, but nowhere near a hundred years either.

On and off would be pretty nice. This was mostly on. Or that's how I understand it anyhow, it was going on a long time before I came around after all.

I guess that's how it'd feel like if it really lasted a whole century. That's spanning at least a generation or two, right?

The one at home covered at least a generation. This one would have to cover two or three if not more.

... I can't really imagine that.

Same here. That's just way too long for things to go on.

At least without either side definitively winning.

Is there a reason it took so long for someone to have an actual victory?

You mean at home? ... Honestly I'm not that sure. When I was in school it wasn't a war so much as it was trying to spread culture. That's what they said anyhow.

Of course that was never the truth.

I guess it wouldn't be. [The war in her own home didn't even last that long, but she remembers the sort of stories people told about Auj Oule, and how when she went there herself, it was nothing like the stories.] It's kinda weird though. You'd think after a hundred years, someone would want an actual end to it.

War isn't that different from anything else in life. You just ... get used to it. Then you don't really think about ending it because it's normal.

[Though frankly Mai's never thought that deeply about the war. She's never cared enough to.]

Isn't that kinda bad though? To get used to war... I guess I'm lucky since the one in my world didn't last all that long, but it sounds sad.

... I've never actually considered it, to be honest. It wasn't something that really effected me.

[A beat, then:]

I guess if you think about it though, it's a little sad. Maybe.
