Objectively, that IS true. It's not so wrong to want to see it, though. Seeing is not believing but confirmation from a general public CAN help more when it is there.
Not so wrong, no. I do occasionally believe people depend entirely too much on their surviving to do so to feel it worthwhile, however.

His life before had been...not meaningless, by any means but frivolous, something he hadn't been devoted to with anything like potential. With the brotherhood, he HAD been fulfilled, for the most part. He hadn't felt redeemed, hard to do in his situation, with an irony attached that most would probably find amusing but he had still done all that he could. There was a comfort in knowing that much, and even in the myriad sprains and stabbing wounds and burns and bullet holes and stitches, it had still been there.
Stepping away, as he's had to do here, is hard and there aren't many places he feels quite like he's doing something decent yet though, so...he guesses that he would agree.]
It changes, doesn't it, depending what you have to do and when. At least, I've felt that way, lately.
[Arno can see the reason for that thought, in a sense. In terms of ideals themselves, it does make sense, too. There are those things one tells themself must stay absolute no matter what. He's not certain he believes in those applying anymore, but perhaps it is a bias for having crossed over on the majority of his absolutes that makes him think that. All the same, he is nodding, his expression considering.]
I suppose there ARE things like that. And that they must vary. Simply because one CAN do some things...well, the shoulds do not always change, do they? I'm not sure I'd call them universal anymore but then...bias.
Not always, and yet ... frequently misunderstood. I have heard, many times, men argue that a should and an action are the same, as if they are inherently synonymous--though in fact many shoulds require inaction.
Inaction... I can think of a few times it would have better served to follow that sort of principle. ...And only one where action was required and not taken. We could use some sort of way to measure things before just leaping in, or staying out.
Maybe some kind of...greater perception? Or even just looking harder ought to do.
I believe that is what one's conscience is for ... although even then, it requires some degree of logical consideration. Morality and logic are not so exclusive as people tend to think.
[It might not be what's intended, or it's that Arno has a one track mind these days, but he's letting out a bit of an amused snort, not so much at those words themselves, but picturing another who he suspects would say, or at least think, something along those lines. And then, a bit later, he's realizing how he probably sounds and shaking his head, lips twitching.]
