[ Brigid tucks hair behind her ear, looking at the computer in front of her. ]

While I appreciate the welcome, and the information, I have to say that I am unimpressed with the method by which I was brought.

[ Meaning, she’s a little salty right now. ]

I don’t suppose there is a school I could teach at is there? I can translate four languages, speak two, and have a doctorate in Irish history.

[ She’s hoping there’s some call for her skills somewhere in this place. ]

If not, I also have some skill with Krav Maga and could, potentially, teach that, if there’s some call for it. Basically, I wish to teach. If someone could direct me to a few opportunities, I’d be grateful.

[ She leans forward and cuts off the feed. ]

Never at least visited the zoo?

[One of her favorite places. Granted, her life sometimes felt like a zoo, but there were a few animals never used in any of the shows at the parks.]

[ Sometimes, being a werewolf sucked. ]

Huh. That's a shame.

It was the only place outside of one of dad's theaters where I got to see those kinds of animals. Most kids don't get to keep them as pets.

[GEE, IS IT ANY WONDER WHY?]

Well, no I wouldn't expect them to be kept as pets.

Shame. Those other kids really don't know what they're missing.

[It was not impossible to tell just how serious she was.]

I take it you had... unusual pets growing up?

[Aside from Wolf? ~~And Sphere?~~]

Well, they weren't mine, exactly, but...

I remember there was this beautiful white tiger I made friend with when I was about...I don't know, seven or eight? Oh, and there was the snake when I was in kindergarten. I forget which kind it was. There were a few different cages at that theater.

[ Brigid shakes her head, bemused. ]

I always wanted a pet, but Uncle said we weren't allowed.

[ Yes, Uncle. Not her parents. ]

[That was...a little unusual, but not so much so. Certainly not enough that warranted asking. Yet. Though she would wonder in the back of her mind.]

Strict?

My uncle? On some things. Pets and animals he was very strict on. But that was for our own good. And since he's the head of the family, no one argued with him.

[Head of the Family.]

[Ah, that could...possibly explain why it was her Uncle's rule, rather than her parents.]

What kind of family is it, exactly? ...if you don't mind my asking.

It's just...I haven't heard of anybody talking about Heads of Families since before my dad was young.

[ Pack. They were pack and a mere human couldn't understand that, or an Alpha's rule over the pack. But Brigid has a different answer, one that's just as true, if not the whole truth. ]

We're a Boston Irish Catholic clan, almost? Uncle listens to others in the family, but his word is ultimately law.

[Hmm. Not what she was expecting, but she supposed it was meant to be a sufficient enough answer.]

I'm Italian myself.

Though there...was no clan. Just me and my dad. For as long as I can remember.

It's part of why I went to Ireland for school.

I was an only child too. After my mother passed, it was just Da and I, then my uncle took me in when he was killed in the line of duty.

[She winced at the parallel.]

I...lost my dad too. Or, rather, I guess you can say I will lose him. [Timelines. Long story.] I'm sorry for yours too.

Thank you, but I'm rather confused at what you mean about losing yours?

[ She's very confused. ]

The short version? When I was first brought here about four or five years ago, dad was still okay. But then...I saw a vision of my future. The one waiting for me back home.

That's how I know.

[Note how she still didn't specify exactly how her father was lost. Deliberately leaving that part vague.]

That's horrible. I'm sorry you went through that.

Yeah. Me too.

But...I guess it's better than not knowing.

[Which was a strange thing to say for someone who prided herself in living in the moment. Words meant to offer comfort in the face of that knowledge; she'd told herself enough times over the years that she'd even managed to convince herself it was true.]

No, sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

[ she believes that. ]

If it had been me, then maybe. Yeah. I would have rather not know.

But...it's my dad. I thought...if I knew what happened, and why, then maybe there was some way I could stop him.

My Da was my whole world.

We daughters? We always want to save them.

[ She still remembers her Da taking that second shift because her financial aid wasn't enough to cover her books. She'd argued that she could work too, but... he wanted to cover her schooling. ]

[It was more than just that, though. Giovanni Zatara...he wouldn't die (not on Earth-16, at least), but he would lose both his body and his freedom in exchange for hers. [Which meant it was more than just a daughter wanting to get her father back. It was about a daughter who needed to right a wrong she had caused.]

So you do get it, then.

Why I wanted to find out. Just this once.

Yes, I do understand.

And I can understand wanting to know as well.
