It kind of...reversed itself. My friends were human at the cafe but turned into cats when they were anywhere else, but when the witch who cast the curse was killed, they all regained their human forms permanently.

That is not uncommon. Her control over them ceased once her heart stopped.

It is rare for spells to carry on after the caster's lifetime - unless they are exceptionally powerful.
