I suppose I should make a proper introduction, and this seems the best way to do it although it's dreadfully impersonal.

I am Dr. Hannibal Lecter. I'm a psychiatrist, and was a physician for many years before my retirement from that field. However, if I've understood correctly we are facing some difficult times here, so I am happy to offer my medical services if needed. A shame about the rationing, too. Proper nutrition is essential, and there's nothing quite like a well-cooked meal.

But, regardless of the situation, I am very pleased to meet you all and I hope we can get to know each other better.

That seems to be the case for many here. Is psychology something you're interested in?

Of course. Being a medicus myself, I've devoted my life to the science of the human condition. The mind is certainly a part of it, although I'm sure many would disagree.

It's unfortunate that the mind is so underestimated or dismissed as someone's personal problem, when the study of individual minds can reveal a lot about humanity in general.

It seems as though many think the body is the only area of interest, as far as scientific pursuits go. The mind and soul best left for the church. [ He obviously doesn't agree. ]

I am fortunate that where I come from the scientific merits of psychiatry are well-known, although there are still those who disagree.

I am sure we will — there are a few physicians here, but not quite enough to cover the needs of the population.

A lot of hospitals are chronically understaffed, so I am somewhat used to that.
