Good afternoon. My name is Lin. [Anyone from Republic City who's used to hearing her speak will catch the barest of hesitations both here and throughout the broadcast: she's being exceedingly careful about what she's saying. To anyone else, however, they might well be taken for normal pauses in speech.]

As you can no doubt guess, I'm another one of your new arrivals. My welcome party told me I needed to find a job here, but they were light on the details. Under normal circumstances, I'd offer my services as an earthbender, but given the state of this--turtle?--it's probably out of the question.

What I can offer is some thirty years' experience on the police force of a large city, with a good portion of that time spent as chief. I'm willing to start at the bottom and work my way up--that won't be a problem.

[A meaningful stare.] I'm sure some people here can provide references, if necessary.

[Another police officer. Female? Enjolras is a bit surprised by that but he is also a little distrustful of another law officer. Part of his respect for Javert is because the man certainly actually holds the principles of justice to be true, unlike many of the police in Paris. Still, she is obviously not from there, especially as she is a woman and Enjolras decides he will give this woman on the feed a chance for now. He is nodding respectfully in the return feed.]

Welcome. I will tell you what was told to me and that there are few places to be hired on these days, unless you are working for another foreigner. The Kedan are not especially happy to have us work for them these days, due to some circumstance that occurred before I arrived.

You might, perhaps, speak to Inspector Javert. He certainly is involved with the law and order of this place and may be able to help you, though I would suspect he'll ask that you prove yourself first. He is a good man, and just, though not a kind one or easy to speak to, though with your experience, I should not think that is a problem.

[Something in her bearing suggests that those last two things should not be an issue, so Enjolras feels comfortable giving the recommendation. And there is something about her that he suspects Javert will approve of. ]

[Lin would be lying if she said she didn't do a double take. Blond hair and blue eyes aren't exactly a common sight in Republic City, to say nothing of the rest of the world. But then one of the people who'd escorted her from her apartment was blue and had four arms. She recovers fast.

She listens attentively, gaze never faltering, and inclines her head slightly when he finishes.]

Proving myself won't be an issue. I'd ask the same if I were in his place. I'll keep his name in mind.

Thanks for the information, Mr. Enjolras. How long have you been here?

Indeed. [Enjolras is nodding at that last part.] I can understanding the reasoning for it, grave responsibility that the law seems to be. Especially in a new place like this. ] He does believe the inspector might give her a chance though, and it does seem that she is a bit like him in that she will pursue justice, even if it is the justice of a written law, which may sometimes be wrong. That is not the officer's fault his...or her...self as he has come to understand. That double take felt, perhaps, a bit odd, but women, and Paris and such. It IS something he has received before.]

I came here perhaps a few weeks ago, or at least that I recall, though I am told that I spent time here once before. Odd that I do not recall it, but I know of some others who have experienced the same.

It has less to do with the gravity of the law and more to do with sheer competence. [Once upon a time you might have been right, Enjolras. And then she went full vigilante.] I'm well aware my credentials don't mean much in a world like this one. Although if you know where I can get my hands on a copy of the laws here, I'd appreciate it.

Some kind of amnesia? [It's odd, and not a little disturbing, but so far nobody other than Korra has claimed to recognize her.] Do you remember going back to your own world between trips?

Ah! You flatter me with that description, [interjects a cold, bemused, and abrupt tone of voice.] It is unlike you. I will remind you I am not an Inspector, as much as this woman is not chief.

[The reply comes late in the evening, after he has had a chance to review the day's public bulletins. Javert is a busy man - and intentionally so. He keeps himself hard as work for almost as many hours as he is awake. It keeps things simpler, and it keeps his mind from treading too deeply into dangerous grounds.

This woman caught his eye immediately. She hit all the proper points: she was forthright; she was direct; she put her experience and qualifications forward, and offered a means to cross-check them. That sits well with a thorough man like Javert. He is satisfied.

So Javert chooses to take the bite Enjolras offered up. Let's give it a try.]

Madame, it is I you want. I am the Javert the blond fellow spoke about. But let's not get too excited, it is doubtful I have what you expect. First, and answer me plainly: what position do you want, with your qualifications?

Do I so, Monsieur Inspec....Whatever it is that I am meant to call you here? I only mean to give credit where it is due. [While he personally has no like for the man, Enjolras can hardly believe that Javert is anything but a man who has always tried to do what he sees as good, and he can respect that, as long as it does not interfere with anything that he is doing at the time. ] Actually, that does cause me to wonder how I should address you now. Have you a title I should use instead? [Is he being serious or baiting him here? It is hard to say.]

In any case, yes, of course, I should leave you to speak with Madame Lin, yes. Please excuse my interruption.

[Let it never be said that Lin jumps to conclusions. What she does do is trust first impressions, and the first impression she has of the man in front of her is a good one: businesslike without being bureaucratic, without the veneer of charm she's learned to detest.

So he's an inspector. The lower rank means little to her; he's been here longer, he has the advantage. She folds her hands in front of her, her impeccable posture never wavering.]

I'll be frank. If I were back home, I'd be wasted as a beat cop. [Her words are more confident than arrogant. It's simple fact.] But I don't have my bending, and I don't know the streets. I don't mind patrols or open-and-shut cases when they're the best way to learn how a city works.

[He thinks before setting it to private - but he doesn't really want yet another person potentially scolding him for his wrongdoings in public. He'd really rather avoid Lin at this point in time, but it'd be suspicious if she found out he was hiding from her.]

[She makes no particular attempt to hide the dislike in her expression, but her tone of voice is civil enough, if cold.]

She also mentioned you'd been sitting on your hands of late, although I don't know if I believe that.

I can't make you believe it. But, I have my reasons.

[He wasn't going to break the news quite as delicately as he did with Korra. Lin wasn't a naive teenager, after all.]

...I'm dead, Lin.

[New arrival, formality, blah, blah, blah. Toph twists around in the twisty chair, listening.]

[Until one thing makes her come to a dead halt and respond.]

Earthbender? You're an earthbender?

[Attention captured, capta-- er. Chief!]

[Lin freezes up at the sound of that voice. Truth be told, it isn't anything like the one she remembers. But Korra hadn't said anyone else was here from her world--at least, none she knew of, and--]

That's right. [Pause.] And you are?

*failed at specifying -- meant to be video!* *will fix in pose*

[The glitch that seemed to be in the system clears up at that point, allowing the delayed video to pop through. Lin will find herself face to face with a small girl no more than 12-13 years old with a heavy fringe of dark hair that falls into her eyes. Said eyes are pale beneath the strands, not quite seeming to focus even though they're turned towards the screen. The video comes on just in time for the girl to break into a full-fledged grin.]

Seriously? Yes.

[Now the question was, was this woman from her time, Korra's, or something else?]

I'm Toph.

[Testing here as much as providing her name. She seems to have a reputation in Korra's time.]

From what I understand, only the native force has any jurisdiction.

It's fair. [He's very grudging on that point, but he makes himself admit it.]

Ooh, earthbending. That one should be fun to see once this stuff with our powers is all handled.

Any chance you know a girl named Korra?

You don't have it at all where you come from? [She sounds genuinely surprised by that. It's one thing to be told it; it's another to meet someone from a world entirely devoid of bending.]

We're-- [A pause.] We've worked together before.

Oh, no-no. We have loads of different powers. I've got one myself, but ones like bending aren't relatively common. [ Earthbending in particular. ] I know a couple of people who can work with water and ice.

Ahh, cool. She's the one who actually told me about bending.

I was told to talk to someone named Javert. We'll see where it leads.

[Hey Lin. Guess who might be trying to get information. Wayne told him to look for Javert. So maybe, follow somebody else look like a cooler cop.

Because he can be a dick sometimes.
