There's a lot of things I've learned to just accept since I've been here. A magic bottle with the personification of death inside it is something that I can live with. What really confuses is me is how my dog ended up inside it and who put him there.

[At that moment there's a bark and Hawke's notch-eared mabari pushes his way into the feed, examining the strange thing that Hawke appears to be talking to. Hawke's hand falls to Notch's head as he pats the dog's head.]

Don't get me wrong, I love having him back, but answers are always nice.

[So would knowing that his dog isn't actually possessed by whatever corruption was in the bottle.]

At least the trip was fun enough. We should plan another one soon. Maybe this time without a dragon the size of a mountain, or the swamp. I'm thinking a chateau overlooking a lake.

That said, I think people find all sort of stuff in the places we make landfall. Maybe whatever... magic brings us here has side effects or something?

[ After a moment's thought. ]

I think the pets found heavily lean into canines, though. No idea why.

[Hawke looks at the dog and grins.]

It's impossible to mistake him for anyone else that's true. Still, the land of the dead isn't exactly where I expected to find him.

[Jack mentioned to him about finding things during landfall. Hawke just assumed there would be some kind of island or something. Silly him for assuming.]

Because whatever is making the choice has good taste clearly.

[No he's not biased at all.]

Oh, the bottle... it may bear similarities with the Death plane thing, but it ain't the same. You couldn't find things, when you went through the portals to Death. And it brought out your worst nightmares. The very worst. This was... bad. [ He winces. ] But it got better. It never gets any better, in Death. You just... find a way to escape it.

[ Bucky pauses, then shakes his head. ]

Sorry. Didn't mean to... go on and on at ya. Just wanna make sure you don't mix 'em up.

[ Continents, sometimes. Sometimes, sinking to the bottom of the ocean - with another city, or just corpses. Landfalls can be different, in this place. ]

Anyway. I guess, with all the dogs.

Keep in mind, some of them can be pretty damn big.

[ He might not have really spent time with either Naga or Mrs. O'Leary, but he's seen them around. They're kind of hard to miss, all in all. ]

[His eyebrow arches upwards.]

Sounds like there's a story there.

[Hawke didn't expect the sudden lecture. The information is nice though. he smirks again and continues to steer the conversation away from something depressing.]

Big dogs I can deal with.

[His own stands just about at his waist and weighs as much as an adult man.]

I think most people that went to Sinbrilee have a story there, pal.

[ Milder, though, and Bucky shrugs. ]

Sorry. If you get sucked there, you'll probably know the difference. Eventually.

[ Well, the dogs he means are definitely bigger. But he's sure they can be handled. And neither of them's gone on a blood rampage, so Bucky assumes their respective owners know what they're doing. ]

Maker you're a cheery fellow aren't you?

[Hawke seems unaffected by all of it though.]

I'm usually better'n this, actually.

[ He tries for a smile, that sort of... mostly doesn't work. ]

Been here for a while, is all.

That smile just looks painful. Try a drink or four, that might help loosen it up.

[Or follow the Hawke school of thought and repress repress repress.]

How long is 'a while'?

... did that for a while, too. It was ... interesting, during the rationing.

[ The half-smile is more real. ]

Nineteen months, give or take.

I heard about that. Glad I missed it.

[Nineteen months. Shit.]

I'm going to get sick of seafood.

Dreamin' ain't that bad. Death? Death you'd wanna stay away from. Good thing that, far as I know, portals to there don't really work, from Keeliai.

[ And, finally, the smile actually works. Like a smile, not a grimace. Self-mocking smile, but smile all the same. ]

You could always go on a liquid diet for some spells. Done that. After a while, even fish seems better.

Now I'm fairly certain you want to stay away from death no matter the situation, but that's just my philosophy.

[That's more like it. At least this time he doesn't look like someone just stepped on his foot.]

Too bad it causes such a mess.

Writing does not translate as well as spoken word, here. I'm sure the archways must've been properly labeled. Just ain't nobody who could read it.

Maybe try building a wall in front of them instead.

[ Bucky just. Rolls his eyes. ]

By the time we figured out what was which, it was time to go, anyway. [ And, after a moment. ]

'sides, it'd take walls on both sides, I guess.

Better. Somewhat.

It's another plane of existence, too, only less brutal than Death. It shapes around what you bring into it, like in dreams. Your memories, your, uh, what lives in the bottom of your mind. Wishes. Whatever.

People've been able to reproduce those portals here, I think. Those that took down the symbols and such. I'm pretty sure it just didn't work, with the Death ones.

Wishes huh? I've got a few that I wouldn't mind coming true. Maybe I'll pay it a visit.

Might be for the best those other portals didn't work. I think we could all live without a portal leading to Death.

Yeah. So long as you don't forget to come out or somethin'. Wishes can be dangerous and all that.

[ To the latter, Bucky does nod. ]

More efficient than walls, right?

I tend not to worry about wishes. My mind is usually more preoccupied with things that want to stab me.

[He chuckles.]

Yeah, it may be a little different when you've got them coming true 'round you. Just - keep it in mind, all right?

And not all dreams are good dreams.

[ Bucky nods. ]

I think that's the idea, not sure who's making it happen, but, yeah, pretty much.

Alright, if I ever go there I'll try not to get distracted with gold busts of myself.

[He smirks. Hawke knows a thing or two about bad dreams but he'll say nothing about that to a stranger where everyone can hear him.]

Maybe someone who actually knows what they're doing. The question is if that person is on our side or not.

Yeah. There's always more questions than answers, 'round here.

And the answers are never satisfying.

Most of them, no, not really.

[ What can he even say more on the subject? ]
