I have something to tell you all, and some of you might not believe me.
[Valdis' voice is hesitant, halting and uncertain]
There are very few of us left, it seems, who remember Malicant's reign or the atrocities committed by his followers. The death, the taint, the drugs and the suffering inflicted upon foreigner and Kedan alike is unknown to all of our newcomers. But this isn't just about that.
[A long pause, followed by an audible breath]
I have recently discovered that Milyn, the Cherrywood Healer, was involved with the Cultists. She reported directly to Daseng and created the drug known as Dust, as well as the base for Lucid.
[Another pause and then a low growl.]
She was our only ally among the Kedan when we first returned from the Dreaming, she aided us in defeating Malicant...but she also helped him wreak his havoc in the first place.
[Another growl]
I don't know about all of you, but I can't trust her anymore.

[Pepper has only recently interacted with Milyn, having only encountered her very sparsely at larger events, but she's heard a lot about her. The Cherrywood Healer was well-known around Keeliai, and most Foreigners spoke rather higher of her than any other significant player in the city. Significant despite not being a family head, and deep enough into things to know where Yunxu kept some of his salt. Hm.]
I mean, I didn't know enough about her to trust her in the first place, but that's, like, totally messed up. Not like she's the first person in history, but that doesn't make it any less uncool. Very Werner von Braun of her.

[This would be an interesting development for sure, but Valdis liked Pepper, so this conversation was perhaps a bit more nervewracking than most.]

[She's teasing. This is serious, but a little humor never hurt.]
Is she doing anything, like, actively right now that's all culty?
no subject
[Yes, she is doing that coy thing.]
I don't believe so, it's her lack of empathy regarding the people her research hurt that bothers me.
no subject
Yeah, that's a solid tick in the 'possibly a sociopath' column. Jeez. I guess you've interrogated her already?
[It'll probably be only the first of many, judging by the responses over the radio.]
no subject
[A fairly one-sided conversation, but Valdis still wouldn't label it as an interrogation]
no subject
[Pepper is possibly too excited by this prospect.]
Do the rest of the kedan know what she's done? They should if they don't.

Re: private;
[The next move belongs to someone else and that will determine her reaction. Thus is the game.]
private;
[Cue the raptor noises.]
If you're playing white, who's playing black? Wait, does that mean we're all the pieces? Can I be a bishop?
Re: private;
[You can't see it, but she's smiling now]
Howver, I've already made my move. Now, I can only react to what happens next and unlike chess, I can't control all the white pieces.
private;
[Because you're starting to sound a little like a puppetmaster, minus the evil laugh and Pepper is fairly certain Valdis would never buy a cat anyway.]
Then what's the endgame if it's not knocking down the black king? [Beat.] Oh. Oh.

Re: private;
It's his move.

[Yunxu and Milyn don't exactly get along, so if Valdis is casting shadows on Milyn as a way to hit at Yunxu, there has got to be something else going on.]
Re: private;
private;
[Then maybe you can explain what Yunxu has to do with this. Perhaps Valdis will be a little more willing to chat if they're both inside the same four walls.]

[The woman was immortal, after all. Or at least she hopefully still was. Either way, Valdis is hard to hurt and harder kill, but the sentiment stands.]
