[The post opens on the video setting, with a curious-looking rather pointy-nosed sandy-haired man in Victorian garb looking at the console. He adjusts his cravat slightly.]

I believe this is the 'video' setting? And you all can see me? This really is marvelous, you know—or perhaps you don't, if you're used to it-

[He then abruptly switches to the audio setting, his voice gaining a shading of amusement.]

And I can certainly see the advantages of being heard, but not seen. How thoughtful of our hosts.

[Then the audio cuts off too, his fascination with this new technology overwhelming his usual good manners.]

And this, of course, is text. Most similar to what I'm used to, though this letter arrangement does not seem to be the most efficient. Are we capable of changing this? I'm sure there's a better arrangement for these.

Well, yeah. Especially for people who like to keep themselves a secret. But sometimes texting is just as extended as talking, maybe even more. [For her, at least.]

There's a language barrier, too. The text doesn't auto-translate like the audio does.

Hmm, yes, I suppose so. Letters do tend to become wordy. But I think that perhaps that is an attempt to make them worth the paper and postage, at least at home. Without such concerns, have they become more brief?

[He nods, making a note of that.] Then it would be wise to contact someone first by voice or image.

Both can be wordy. It depends on what you're trying to say. Some people shorten their sentences and even some of their words for casual conversation, but it doesn't mean there can't be a lengthy discussion over it either.

It seems like most people here speak English back in their homes, so it's not too big an issue most of the time, but yeah. Voice or visual is more of an insurance.

Yes, I see your point. I suppose we did have brief messages- messages sent by aethographer were often very brief. But that was a different matter, as efficiency was necessary.

I'll keep that in mind, if I have a message that does not require a specific audience.

If you don't mind my asking, what year was it for you back home? And what's an aethographer?

It was 1873. An aethographic transmitter, or aethographer, is a way to transmit messages wirelessly through the aether, from one transmitter to another.

[He smiles.] I do my best to please.

And what's an aether? I'm assuming something aerial related?

[Too distracted by that right now oops.]

Aether are a peculiar sort of particle that seems to be unique to my world. They mostly congregate in the aether streams, quite a distance above the ground, but you can find loose particles nearly everywhere.

[And some authors can be terribly vague about them, so it shan't get anymore sciencey than that.]

What kind of particle?

Their exact nature is difficult to determine. They are aetheric particles.

[Well he did say 1874. Even if it was a different world, clearly, maybe the technology couldn't find out exactly yet. She nods, then shrugs.] Just wondering.

[The limits of technology are very frustrating.] I'm sorry I can't provide more accurate information.

I wouldn't recommend getting up close and personal, no matter how fascinating they sound.
